3 Key dates: Fall Camp dates: 28 July 07 August School starts: 07 AUG Regular Practices begin: 07 AUG Situation WX from 28 July 07 AUG Highs/Lows: 95s/72s; T-storms likely in late afternoon several times/week Feels like temperature will break 100 daily Practices will be at 0900 and 1500 daily (hottest time of the day) Fall practices after school start at 1425 (1500 on field) Heat will have a negative effect on practices and players if risks associated are not mitigated

4 Mission Glenwood football coaches and staff clearly identify weather risks on a daily basis, mitigate the risks with proper controls, and monitor the residual risks based on the situation and conditions in order to ensure the safety of every Glenwood football player.

5 Execution Intent: provide a safe practice environment regardless of WX conditions Key Tasks: Conduct daily risk assessment WRT WX Monitor players before, during and after practice for heat injuries (heat exhaustion, cramps, stroke) Plan and execute a casualty evacuation plan and casualty treatment plan in the event of a heat casualty Ensure all Glenwood coaches, staff, and players are briefed on the plan; conduct daily checks and inspections of equipment Ensure players receive breaks, are properly hydrated, and diets monitored, use sunscreen NO USE OF LONG SLEEVE PANTS/SHIRTS BY PLAYERS MONTIOR PLAYERS WHO HAVE TOO MANY LAYERS OF CLOTHES (INCREASE CHANCE OF HEAT CAX) Endstate: safe environment and safe players

6 Execution (Head Trainer) Concept of the operation (daily) Phase I: prep equipment (trainer and staff, and players detailed to assist) Fill all water containers (include ice) and WOW Setup Cooling tents on field; put water underneath tents when not on field for player use Prep Ice sheets; ice sheets under tent in cooler Move equipment to field Phase II: Monitor/Mitigate field conditions and players during practice Water jugs filled throughout practice Players given rest under shade Helmets off unless in a drill Stick to timeline and practice plan Treat and Evac heat CAX as required Phase III: recover all equipment from field Phase IV: prep for next practice/ conduct after action review

8 Practice timeline: Coordinating Instructions P-45 min: check WX, temp, wet bulb (Head coach and trainer) assess weather risks P-30 min: fill WOW, prep ice sheets in cooler, fill water bottles (Head Trainer) P-15: erect field shelters (trainer and player work detail) with chairs and trainers table P-10: move water and coolers to field (trainer and players) P-5: final check to ensure players are not wearing multiple layers or long sleeves/tights (coaches)

9 Casualty Treatment and Evacuation Critical Tasks: Step 1: Know the signs of heat injuries; ID casualty; suspend practice (if required) Step 2: If the casualty can walk, walk to cooling tent; if not evac with stretcher Step 3: Head trainer assesses situation (check temp, HR and pulse) Step 4: adjust clothing as required (loosen/remove); have casualty sit Step 5: administer fluids and/or ice sheets Step 6: Call 911 if necessary and continue to monitor casualty Step7: Paramedics arrive and CASEVAC is necessary Step 8: Notify parents, school admin, AD; gather info on where casualty is being transported Step 9: suspend practice if situation merits Primary Aid and Litter: Athletic Trainer, Coach Risdon, Coach Threatt, Coach King Alternate Aid and Litter team: Coach Gibson, Coach McConnel, Coach Howard, Coach Thomas

11 Control and Communication Chain of command for CASEVAC (who s in charge) Primary: Head Athletic Trainer(Scott) Alternate: Coach King Contingency: Coach Risdon Emergency: Coach Threatt Commo plan: Primary means to call 911: Coach King will call 911 upon the direction of the athletic trainer Alternate: Coach Risdon will call 911 upon the direction of the trainer Dissemination of Info/Info Collection: Coach King will record all info on the casualty and If the CAX is going to the hospital (include name and number of hospital); Coach Risdon is the Alternate recorder Coach Gibson will call the parents of the athlete being evacuated (Coach McConnel is alt notification) Coach Gibson will notify the headmaster and AD
