4 Installing The Gas Line The gas line must be installed before comleting the installation of the L42DF-ST Firelace. Natural Gas requires a minimum inlet gas suly ressure of 5.5" W.C. & a manifold ressure of 3.5" W.C. Provision must also be made for a 1/8" N.P.T. lugged taing and be accessible for test gauge connection immediately ustream of the gas suly controls to the aliance. The firelace gas connection and the main oerating gas valve is located behind the removable trim at the bottom of the unit and need only be attached to the gas line with an aroved fitting, as required by the alicable installation codes. To access the firelace gas connection the main burner must be removed as shown below in figure 5a. Only use gas shut-off valves aroved for use by the state, rovince, region, or governing body, in which the aliance is being installed, or as required by the alicable installation codes. Flexible gas connectors must not exceed 3 feet in length, unless it is allowable within alicable installation codes. The aliance and its individual shut-off valve must be disconnected from the gas suly iing system during any ressure testing of that Figure 5a. Gas line access. Non-combustible materials both sides (left & right), walls and front-bottom. Above firelace see Fig. 24 & 25. Framing Kit, (Part No. L42FS01B, 4-cs. The aliance must be isolated from the gas suly iing system by closing its individual manual shut-off valve during any ressure testing of the gas suly iing system at test ressures equal to or less than 1/2 sig (3.5 kpa). Note: After gas line is connected, each aliance connection, valve and valve train must be checked while under normal oerating ressure with either a liquid solution, or leak detection device, to locate any source of leak. Tighten any areas where bubbling aears or leak is detected until bubbling stos comletely or leak is no longer detected. DO NOT use a flame of any kind to test for leaks /4 Installation Vent Installation Cautions: This section covers the installation of direct venting and terminations. Installation Requirements L42DF-ST firelace is certified for use with Montigo Standard Series (5" / 8") venting comonents. Minimum clearance to combustible construction around the vent ie is 1" on all sides, excet on horizontal venting where the to of the ie must have a clearance of at least 2". Use only certified Montigo vent comonents. (Use of other arts will void the Montigo warranty, and may imede the oeration of the firelace.) All joints must be secured with a minimum of two screws er joint Vent terminations must not be recessed in walls or siding Horizontal runs must be suorted by a minimum of two suorts er horizontal run. A minimum of one screw on each side of suort is also required Flex vent sections may be stretched u to 50% of their total length (eg. a 24" section may be stretched to 36") Maximum horizontal run with no vertical rise is 6 feet. Flex vent sections over 6 feet must fall within the limits set by the venting grah and must have a minimum vertical rise of 3 inches er foot of flex. Solid vent sections may be cut less than half way from the female end Venting comonents can be used in any combination of solid/rigid ie or flex ie and in any orientation (Male connectors can face in any direction) Vent terminations can be very hot. If the termination is less than 7 feet above a ublic walkway, it should be fitted with a certified Montigo Heat Guard. (Part no. PTKOG). Do not obstruct, or attemt to conceal, the vent termination. These actions will affect the oeration of the firelace, and may be hazardous. In heavy snow areas, take extra care to revent snow buildu from obstructing the vent termination. Use Montigo VSS Vinyl Heat Shield when using on alications with vinyl siding to guard against ossible damage. Installing The Remote Switch The L42DF-ST's gas valve, located behind the lower trim, may be connected to a wall switch. The valve generates its own ower on a millivolt circuit. Use only low voltage wire, and DO NOT connect any external ower to it. Note: The switch location must not exceed 30' from the firelace. Page

5 Installation Installing Terminations with Built-In Frames Installing Heat Guards over Terminations PTO-3F (5"/8") PTKOG (5"/8") 1. Frame the termination oening to 11" x 11". 2. Fasten the termination to the studs using a minimum of 4 screws. Installing Terminations with MSR Frames MSR PTO-3F (5"/8") 1. Ensure that the two long mounting brackets are facing the bottom of the termination. (See inset). This will rovide more heat rotection at the to of the termination, where temeratures are highest. 2. Attach to the facelate of the termination using four sheet metal screws. Installing the Nailing Flange Extension Once the firelace is laced into the rough framed oening, and the sulied steel lintel is in lace, (Part No. L42087) (see Figure 2), the sulied nailing extension must be laced along the to edge of the firelace and securely fastened in lace to the metal lintel, and combustible wood framing. Sulied metal flange extension, Part No. L Frame the termination oening to 12" x 12". 2. Fasten the termination to the studs using a minimum of 4 screws. Installing Terminations with MOSR Frames MOSR Figure 6c. Installing the Nailing Flange Extension. PTO-3F (5"/8") 1. Frame the termination oening to 12" x 12". 2. The maximum horizontal vent run with no vertical lift is 12". See Figure 16. Heat Shields Due to high flue temeratures, the heat shield (RHS101) must be used on all installations straight through the wall, at the oint where the vent ie connects to the termination. With the heat shield, vent clearances can be maintained at 1". The heat shield is not included with the firelace. To install the heat shield, slide one section over the vent ie on the inside of the wall oening, with the circular ortion inside the wall cavity. Screw the shield in lace over the wall oening. Install the second section on the outside of the wall oening sliding the circular ortion into the wall oening. Refer to Figure 15. Long Vent Runs: For longer or more comlex vent runs, vertical lift is required. First ensure that the lanned run is accetable using the Vent Grah. Plan out the required comonents using the chart above. You may be able to use fewer comonents using the chart on Page 8. Examle: A 10' section of rigid ie and a 90 elbow may be used in conjunction with a 3 ft. flex section (PFL-3) will, when extended in a chase, allow for a maximum horizontal run of twelve and one-half feet from the centre of the firelace to outside wall and a minimum of 7'6" when retracted in oosite direction. (See Figure 16.) "D" flex sections and "E" solid sections may be used in conjunction with one another to obtain different ossible horizontal length installations. 10 Finishing Around the Firelace Combustible mantels and mouldings may be safely installed over the to and on the front of the firelace rovided that they do not roject beyond shaded area shown in Figure 24. Side wall clearances are 3". Combustible surrounds may be installed with 3" clearance to the side of the firelace as shown in Figure 25. Firelace Facing When selecting the finish material for your firelace, it is imortant to remember the following: THE HORIZONTAL LOUVRES MUST NOT BE OBSTRUCTED IN ANY WAY - to do so restricts the air suly for the control comartments and heat exchanger it also revents access for servicing controls. The face of the firelace may be ainted to match the room decor, rovided you use a heat-resistant aint. Decorative facing must not extend ast the firelace oening at all, because it will interfere with the access to retainers for removal of glass door. Steel Stud construction allowable within this area Non-Combustible Facing Material Installation To of firelace Non-combustible Header (Sulied by Montigo) Non-Combustible Facing Material Painting: Secial care is recommended by the Master Painters and Decorators Association, when ainting the firelace surrounds, to select and aly a quality Alkyd sealer rior to the alying of latex aints. Page 10 Horizontal Run (in) Mantels & Surrounds NOTE: National Canadian Gas Association mantel test requirements are for fire hazard revention to combustible materials. New technology, to meet consumer and government demands for the wise use of energy, has romted us to manufacture many models of firelaces which are hot, fuel and energy efficient. Please be aware; temeratures over the mantel will rise above normal room temerature and walls above firelace may be hot to touch. Warning: When covering the uer metal ortion of the firelace with a noncombustible material Please Note: The decorative facing materials may be subject to temeratures in excess of 250 F. This should be considered when selecting facing materials. We recommend careful consideration be given to the effects of elevated mantel temeratures which may be in excess of roduct design, for examle: candles, lastic or ictures. This can cause melting, deformation, discoloration or remature failure of T.V. and radio comonents. 15 See ages 13 to 15. Oeration Lighting Instructions Burner Adjustment The L42DF-ST is equied with an adjustable burner, allowing you to raise or lower the flames. To adjust the flames, locate the black knob marked 'Hi-Lo', in the centre of the gas control valve (See Figure 32). The front burners are not adjustable. To raise the flame height, turn the black knob (located behind the lower trim) counter-clockwise. To lower the flame height, turn clockwise. 'Hi-Lo' Adjustment Knob Maintenance General Have the firelace and installation insected yearly. The insection must include, but is not limited to, the following: A visual check of the entire vent system and termination. An insection of the exlosion relief flaers and the door gasketing to ensure a roer seal. An insection of the burner, venturi, and rimary air oenings. An insection of the gas valve, gas comonents, and ilot flame. For your convenience a 1/8" manifold ressure ta is sulied on the gas valve for a test gauge connection. See Figure 32. Insection of all otional equiment; fans, thermostats, etc. For Natural Gas this aliance requires a minimum inlet ressure of 5.5" W.C. and a manifold ressure of 3.5" W.C. Always kee the firelace area clear and free of combustible materials, as well as gasoline and other flammable vaors and liquids. Do not use this aliance if any art has been under water. Immediately call a qualified service technician to insect the aliance and to relace any art of the control system and any gas control which has been under water. Figure 32. 'Hi-Lo' Adjustment on the L42DF-ST's gas valve. Note: L42DF-ST-I models (electronic ignition) do not feature hi/lo adjustment. CAUTIONS Firelace gas control must be in the OFF osition and ilot and main burners extinguished when cleaning aliance with a vacuum. Doors and logs can get very hot. Handle only when cool. Cleaning When the firelace is first activated, there may be some smoking and a visible film may be left on the glass. This is a normal condition, and is the result of burning of rotective coatings on new metal. Glass must be cleaned eriodically to remove any film (which is a normal by-roduct of combustion) which may be visible. Film can easily be removed by removing the door, as shown on age 12. Handle the door carefully, and clean it with non-abrasive glass cleaners. One of the most effective roducts is Kel Kem. Silicone seals on inner door during initial firing will "off gas", leaving a visual deosit of a white substance on combustion chamber walls. This can easily be removed using normal household roducts. Use a vacuum cleaner or whisk broom to kee the control comartment, burner, and firebox free from dust and lint. Linear Burners may be cleaned eriodically with a vacuum to remove soot or other contaminates. WARNING: Do not attemt to clean glass when hot. Do not clean glass with abrasive materials as any glass etching may cause remature glass failure. XG0180 Page 15
