High board divers must control their spin, twist and timing in order to achieve high scores in competition. Use the video files below to complete the following questions to help you gain a better understanding of this sport. Quintic Video Files you will use: 1) 10m Tuck 2) 3m Inward Dive 3) 3m Full-Twist 4) 3m Forward Pike 5) 3m Backward Pike 6) 3m Back Tuck 7) 10m Handstand PLAY AND PAUSE Open the video file 10m Tuck 1) Play the video at all the different speeds. (i) Why would you want to play the video at fullspeed? (ii) Why would you want to play the video at the slower speeds? 79

Open the video file 10m Tuck 2) You are teaching an intermediate standard diver to perform a tuck dive. Watch the dive frame by frame and name some simple coaching points for them to remember about; (i) Their knee movement? (ii) Their body shape during the dive? (iii) Water Entry? TIMING Open the video file 10m Tuck 3) Using the markers and stopwatch, calculate the time: (i) The diver takes to complete the first somersault? (ii) To complete the second somersault? (iii) To complete the third somersault? (iv) From leaving the platform to first point of entry? (v) From removing his hand from his legs to water entry?. 80

ANGLES AND SHAPES Open the video file 3m - Inward Dive 4) Using this angles button, find out the angle between the knee, hip and shoulder in the following frames: (Hint: use zoom factor 2) Frame 57.. Frame Frame Frame 106. Frame 119. Frame Frame 149. Open the video file 3m - Full-Twist 5) In every 5 frames between 173 and 266 draw a yellow line down the length of the diver s body and a pink circle round his head. You should use these buttons. (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) This will create a trace of the path of the diver s body throughout the dive. Create a Single Image Capture of the finished image and save it as a JPEG. Open this JPEG in Microsoft Word and give it an appropriate title including your name. Ask your teacher if you may print it. Open the video file 3m - Full-Twist 6) Clear all the drawings from that video clip. Now, draw a vertical red line at the end of the diving board and answer the following questions. (i) Before leaving the board, which parts of the diver s body has crossed this line? (ii) In which frame does the last part of the diver s body cross this line during takeoff? 81

(iii) How long after take-off does this happen? (iv) After this point, does any part of the diver s body pass to the right of this line? If so, which part? Open the video file 3m Forward Pike 7) Draw a green horizontal line at the level of the diving board. (i) How many somersaults has the diver completed by the time he falls below this line? (ii) What is the first part of the body to touch the line on the way down? (iii) In what frame do the diver s knees first touch the line? Open the video file 3m Backward Pike in the Best Window 8) In this video, draw a horizontal line at the level of the diving platform. (i) How many somersaults has the diver completed by the time he falls below this line? (ii) What is the first part of the body to touch the line on the way down? (iii) In what frame do the diver s knees first touch the line? 9) Using your answers to questions 7 and 8, write down any differences in rotation speed you notice between the two videos. 82

(i) Does the fact that one goes forward and one goes backward cause these differences? Explain your answer. SYNCHRONISATION Open the video file 3m Forward Pike in the Main Window Open the video file 3m Backward Pike in the Best Window 10) Synchronise these two videos at the point of take-off. Then play the videos through together and answer the following questions. Throughout the dive, describe any differences there are in: (i) Time it takes to get into pike position? (ii) Height of jump? (iii) Arm position? (iv) Degree of bend at the waist at take-off? (v) Angle of the knees at take-off? 83

BLEND Open the video 3m Back Tuck 11) Set the zoom at 1.5 (i) Play the video and pause it at frame 66. (ii) What key point in the action does this represent? (iii) (iv) Set Background at this frame so it can be used in the Blend function. How has the diver changed her body shape compared to the background in: Frame 82? ` Frame 94? Frame 108? Frame 126? 84

OVERLAY Open the video file 3m - Inward Dive in the Best window 12) Set the zoom for both videos at 1.5 (i) Play and pause both videos at the frame in which the diver takes-off from the board. (ii) Synchronise the videos and press the Set Overlay button under the Blend tab in the Main window. (NB Remember to make sure that both divers are at a similar place in their respective screens before pressing Set Overlay ) (iii) At each of the following frames, name one similarity and one difference you notice about the dives: Frame Similarity Difference

PHOTO SEQUENCE Open the video file 10m - Handstand 13) (i) Use this button to calculate the angle to the horizontal of the diver s trunk in each of the following frames: (Hint: Draw the angle line from the shoulder to the hip). Frame 120 Frame 142 Frame 159 Frame 168 Frame 174 Frame 193. Frame 201 Frame 210 Frame 218 (ii) Create a 9 frame Multiple Screen Image Capture sequence using the above frames. In each image, the lines forming the angle of the trunk to the horizontal should be visible as in the figure below. (iii) (iv) (v) Save this as a JPEG. Open this JPEG in Microsoft Word and give it an appropriate title including your name. Save and ask your teacher if you may print this document. 86

DIGITISATION (Quintic Coaching & Biomechanics only) Open the video file 3m Back Tuck 14) A digitisation template has already been completed for this video, which tracks the right hand side of the diver. (i) Start a new trace. (ii) Load the digitisation template Diving template.qrm from the golf video file. (iii) Complete the digitisation trace for frames (iv) Save the trace. (v) In the animation window, display the trace using the following combinations of buttons pressed down: (vi) Save this as a JPEG. a) b) c) d) e) (vii) Using the ruler function, find out the lengths of the following: (Hint: Scroll through the video frames until you see the best angle at which to take your measurement i.e. for the upper-arm measurement, when the shoulder and elbow are clearly visible.) Body Segment Hand Forearm Thigh Upper-arm Length (m) 87

15) Fill in the tables with the correct number of stars to produce the following graphs. Choose 1 star, 2 stars or 0 stars for each box. a) Horizontal acceleration of all points without exact values displayed. Acceleration of the right elbow with exact values displayed. Velocity of the right wrist without exact values displayed. b) Vertical distance of all points without exact values displayed. Horizontal acceleration of all points with exact values displayed. Distance of the right shoulder without exact values displayed 88

c) Velocity of the right elbow and left shoulder with exact values displayed. Vertical distance of all points without exact values displayed. Horizontal acceleration of the right wrist without exact values displayed. d) Vertical distance of all points with exact values displayed. Horizontal acceleration of the right shoulder without exact values displayed. Vertical velocity of the right shoulder without exact values displayed. 89

16) Look at the data that you saved in Microsoft Excel and answer the following questions: (i) What is the maximum horizontal velocity of the hip throughout the dive? (ii) What is the maximum vertical acceleration of the wrist throughout the dive? (iii) What is the vertical distance of the shoulder at frame 130? (iv) What is the maximum vertical distance of the ankle throughout the dive? (v) 25 frames after the start of the digitisation, what is the horizontal acceleration of the elbow? 17) Look at the graphs and data that have been produced by the digitisation that you have just completed. Use your experience and sports science background to suggest interventions and training methods to improve the athletic performance of the diver. Quintic would like to thank The British Diving Team for supplying the video footage. All video footage was captured and edited using Quintic Biomechanics 9.03v9 by Quintic Consultancy Ltd. 90
