2 YOUR GUIDE TO PPE Having the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial in safeguarding your employees health. Exposure to hazardous substances can cause a range of ailments, in some cases with tragic consequences. PPE should be worn when performing tasks that could be damaging to the worker s health. PPE includes such items as: Eye Protection Wearing the correct protective eye wear decreases risk to the eyes and reduces injuries. Potential hazards which cause eye injuries include ultraviolet and infrared radiation, harmful gasses, vapours & aerosols, dust, chemical splashes and impacting particles. RSEA s safety goggles and spectacles come in multiple shapes, sizes and styles to suit individual needs. Hearing Protection Wearing the correct hearing protection at work is extremely important, as even a few minutes of exposure to noise each day can accumulate and be damaging to your hearing. RSEA s range of earplugs and earmuffs is carefully considered to suit any application. Head & Face Protection Helmets and Face Shields protect against the risk of injury in the workplace that can occur from falling objects, splashes, strikes, bumps and electrical hazards. Head protection which meets Australian standards is often mandatory at work sites. RSEA s vast assortment of head protective equipment ensures that you are covered for almost any job. Respiratory Protection Respiratory safety equipment protects the wearer from the risk of inhaling toxic and damaging particles and gas. If these substances enter the body they can be absorbed into the blood stream where they are carried to the vital organs. Different applications require varying types of respiratory protection, such as half face or full face respirators, either with or without air supply. Hand Protection Using the correct hand protection can greatly reduce the risk of injury to the hands. In workplaces where the risk of hand injury is present, a risk assessment should be completed to determine the level of hand protection required. RSEA stocks a large range of gloves for a variety of industries and applications. YOUR GUIDE TO PPE Image Courtesy of Body Protection Body protection is a varied section of PPE which incorporates equipment that can reduce risk to the body, such as protective coveralls, knee pads, back supports, hydration and welding equipment. Correct use of body protective PPE safeguards employees against workplace related injuries and illnesses. Height Safety A full risk assessment and work method statement should be carried out to determine if there is need for the use of height safety PPE in your workplace. All personnel using PPE at height must be trained in the proper use and limitations of their equipment. RSEA has a large range of height safety equipment to suit any height application. 68

15 POLARISATION Polarised Lens Light can bounce and reflect off a myriad of surfaces, such as water, snow and the road. Polarising technology removes the glare and the stress it causes to your eyes. The lenses block virtually 99.99% of UVA/ UVB rays, protection that goes well beyond government and commercial standards. Non Polarised WAVELENGTHS & UV LIGHT Polarised Polarised lenses available In Bollé: Hurricane, Prowler, Phantom, Sidewinder, Lowrider, Hustler, Voodoo, Jet & Tracker 2. We receive wavelengths through two organs; we see light through our eyes and we capture sound through our ears. From radio waves to gamma rays, wavelengths gradually constrict, causing their frequency to increase and making them consume more and more energy. Hence, waves gradually increase in intensity and therefore are more dangerous for the eyes. The sun emits three types of light waves and without the correct eye protection each in its own way can seriously affect the eye. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Ultraviolet Light Rays: 5% of the sun s energy reaches the earth in this form. UV rays (invisible tanning rays) can cause serious damage to the unprotected eye including the development of cataracts and corneal blistering. Infrared Light Rays: 50% of the sun s energy reaches the earth as heat or infrared. Some IR rays will be absorbed by the cornea creating a drying effect an issue of importance to contact lens wearers. Visible Light Rays: 45% of the sun s energy reaches the earth in what the eye perceives as colour. Blue Light waves are the most difficult to see. When the unprotected eye strains to focus on it, all other colours can be distorted. After two to three hours in bright sunlight, eyes can have trouble adjusting to night vision. 10 Gamma X rays UV IR Micro Waves Television Radio Radar NM Complete Spectrum 380 NM 780 NM Visible Spectrum The human eye is not able to identify the various elements of a ray - it only sees the results, which are a function of the different wavelengths and their respective light intensity. The human eye can only see wavelengths within the visible spectrum (between 380 and 780 nanometres). CONSEQUENCES OF VISIBLE, U.V. & I.R. RADIATION ON THE EYE Invisible Spectrum - U.V. 24 AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND HEARING PROTECTION STANDARDS Noise induced hearing loss cannot be cured, it must be prevented. The damaging effects of noise can accumulate, even if an employee s ear protection is only removed for a few minutes every day. As 100% wear time is essential, selecting the correct hearing protection is of the utmost importance. When selecting the correct hearing protection the following Australian Standards should be referred to. u AS/NZS Occupational Noise Management - Overview and General Requirements This Standard provides an overview of the AS/NZS 1269 series and general requirements on occupational noise management. The series deals with noise as it affects hearing, but does not deal with other effects of noise. It also provides an integrated approach to establishing, implementing and evaluating an occupational noise management program. Standards Australia AS/NZS Occupational noise management - Overview and general requirements - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Occupational Noise Management - Measurement and Assessment of Noise Emission and Exposure This Standard sets out requirements for, and provides guidance on, the types of noise assessments which may be necessary and the suitable noise measuring instruments to carry the noise assessments out. The type of measuring instruments and procedures to be used for the measurement of noise levels will depend on such factors as the type of workplace, type of noise, work patterns and information required. Standards Australia AS/NZS Occupational noise management - Measurement and assessment of noise emission and exposure - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Occupational Noise Management - Noise Control Management. AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND HEARING PROTECTION STANDARDS This Standard provides requirements and guidance on the management of noise control in occupational settings and applies to all types of workplaces and to all types of sounds. Standards Australia AS/NZS Occupational noise management - Noise control management - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Occupational Noise Management - Hearing Protector Program This Standard specifies the administrative responsibilities associated with a hearing protector program; the selection, use and maintenance of various types of hearing protectors; and training and motivation in regards to hearing protector programs. Standards Australia AS/NZS Occupational noise management - Hearing protector program - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Occupational Noise Management - Auditory Assessment This Standard specifies procedures and requirements for air conduction pure tone audiometry without masking that is applicable to individuals whose hearing sensitivity might be adversely affected by occupational noise exposure or ototoxic agents. Standards Australia AS/NZS Occupational noise management - Auditory assessment - SAI Global. 90

25 DAMAGE PREVENTION Common Noise Levels Quiet Office 50-60dB Restaurant 60-70dB 50kW Electric Motor 90dB Heavy Vehicle 90dB Grinder Compressor dB Diesel Generator dB Mining Drill dB Power Saw 110dB Rock Drill 110dB THE CLASS SYSTEM Class SLC80 db For Use In Noise Less than 90dB(A) to less than 95dB(A) to less than 100dB(A) to less than 105dB(A) 5 26 or Greater 105 to less than 110dB(A) Since noise induced hearing loss cannot be cured, it must be prevented. There are several noise control techniques including engineering controls and administrative controls. Personal hearing protection should be regarded as first aid until noise levels can be reduced to safe levels, or as a last resort when noise cannot be engineered out. Personal hearing protection is usually available in two forms: earplugs and earmuffs. Earplugs are usually made of silicone, or foam, and are inserted into the ear canal. Earmuffs completely enclose the ear, and are held in place against the side of the head by a headband. Earplugs and Earmuffs work by blocking the sound waves from reaching the inner ear. The process of blocking the sound waves is called attenuation. The higher the attenuation the more noise is blocked from reaching the inner ear. Under the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1270:2002, the class system is a simple way to select a hearing protector appropriate to a noise exposure. Once the extent of the noise hazard has been determined by a noise level survey, the user simply applies this to a table like the one below to select an appropriate hearing protector. All calculations are based on the maximum exposure limit of 85dB Leq, 8hr. Example: If a noise level survey shows a person will be exposed to a noise level of 102dB(A)Leq 8hr using the above table, we can see that a Class 4 hearing protector is required for protection against this level of noise. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT In Australia the SLC80 rating is still an acceptable method for the selection of hearing protectors according to clause A2.3 in Appendix A of AS/NZS :2005. WORKPLACE PROTECTION Effective Attenuation (db) 30dB 25dB 20dB 15dB 10dB 5dB Hearing Protector SLC80 30dB (A) Percentage of Exposure Time Worn Discomfort or irritation when wearing hearing protection is particularly apparent and can lead to removal of the hearing protector. This is commonly what happens with high attenuating hearing protectors that are often heavier and more uncomfortable. You only have to remove your hearing protection a few minutes every day for the damaging effects of noise to accumulate. This is why 100% wear time is so important. Over a working day, periods of a few minutes of unprotected exposure can easily accumulate. An example of reduced effective protection is removing your hearing protector for 10 minutes during a total exposure time of 1 hour. The effective protection provided by a high attenuating hearing protector (30dB) is reduced to 8dB. This makes the effective protective value 22dB less than expected, by wearing the hearing protector 83% of the time over 1 hour. It is vital that every effort is made to encourage 100% wear time. This can be achieved through training and providing suitable hearing protection that is comfortable enough to wear all day. Material courtesy of HEARING PROTECTION 91

26 NOISE-INDUCED HEARING LOSS IS 100% PREVENTABLE Unlike most occupational injuries, there is no visible evidence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). It is not traumatic and often goes unnoticed when it first occurs. Noise-induced hearing loss accumulates over time, its effects realised long after the damage has been done. NIHL is permanent and irreversible. With proper education, motivation and protection, is also 100% preventable. When is noise considered hazardous? Noise is considered hazardous anytime you must shout at someone an arm s length away to be heard. While exposure to hazardous noise is common, prevention of NIHL is simple: consistent use of properly fitted hearing protection when exposed to hazardous noise. That is the goal of every Hearing Conservation Program. Indicators of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss. Although there are no visual signs of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, there are a few simple indicators of NIHL. Identification in its early stages can help prevent further damage. High-Frequency Hearing Loss. When hearing impairment begins, the high frequencies are often lost first, which is why people with NIHL have difficulty hearing high pitched sounds such as human voices, alarms and signals. Compared to other sounds, they will seem muffled or distorted. With normal hearing, conversations are understandable if they are loud enough. When someone suffers from noise-induced hearing loss, simply turning up the volume does not make speech clearer. The clarity is adversely affected regardless of how loud the volume. Gradual Progression. NIHL rarely happens overnight. Rather, it accumulates over time with every unprotected exposure to hazardous noise, usually in both ears. This progression can be detected through healthy hearing practices, including the performance of annual audiograms on all employees in your Hearing Conservation Program. Audiograms can identify whether your employees are experiencing a Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS), or a Standard Threshold Shift (STS), which indicates permanent damage and requires further preventative action. Common Symptoms. Those suffering from noise-induced hearing loss will experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or muffled hearing. Non-auditory effects of NIHL may include increased stress, high blood pressure, sleep problems and/or headaches. Create a successful Hearing Conservation Program through best practices. Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a major compensable industrial disease in Australia and results in substantial economic costs. The National Code of Practice for Noise Management and Protection of Hearing at Work provides practical guidance on how the national standard can be achieved. It requires that employees who have work areas with noise levels at or above 85dB (A) have, access to hearing protection on the job. Implementing a Hearing Conservation Program may appear complicated, but there are a number of best practices safety managers can employ to ensure compliance with regulations and promote employee hearing safety. 35 AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND HEAD PROTECTION STANDARDS Head protection is a vital part of an individual s personal protection equipment and is compulsory on most work sites in Australia. The appropriate head protection can prevent potential head injuries which occur from falling objects, strikes, bumps and electrical hazards. The below Australian standards should be referred to when selecting an appropriate level of head protection to ensure that the correct helmets and face shields are used on site. u AS/NZS Occupational Protective Helmets - Selection, Care and Use. The purpose of standard AS/NZS 1800 is to define and advise the practices for the selection, use and maintenance of occupational protective helmets meeting the requirements of AS/NZS 1801 for head protection in building work, construction, general industry, underground working, mining, quarrying, forestry, bushfire fighting, high temperature workplaces and other occupations with similar hazards. Standards Australia AS/NZS 1800 Occupational protective helmets - Selection, care and use - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Occupational Protective Helmets. The purpose of standard AS/NZS 1801 is to define the requirements for occupational protective helmets to protect the wearers head from falling objects in a variety of occupations, to decrease the severity of head injury from hazards related with such occupations. These requirements include the construction and materials of the helmet shell and head harness, mechanical strength of the shell and finish of the helmet. Standards Australia AS/NZS 1801 Occupational protective helmets - SAI Global. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT WORKING LIFE OF SAFETY HELMETS One of the most common questions asked is, what is the working life of a helmet? The answer to this question and indeed all information pertaining to selection, care and use is available in AS/NZS 1800:1998. This standard recommends that in general terms the helmet should be replaced every three years based upon industry testing, however to maintain the helmet the complete head harness insert must be replace every two years. Some customers elect to replace the entire helmet at this time or sooner dependent on its overall condition. Every helmet has an issue date sticker on the inside of the helmet for the wearer to record their name and date of issue. Three years hence remove the helmet from use or earlier if the helmet has changed in colour, exhibits any signs of wear, or damage due to impact or deterioration. (AS/NZS 1800: ). Material courtesy of Helmet Owner s Name. Date to be inserted when issued to new owner. If the sticker has not been used, replace the helmet three years from the manufacture date stamp under the brim or peak of the helmet. In the centre of the stamp is the year with a direction arrow pointing to the month of that year in which the helmet was made. Indicates the material the Helmet is manufactured from. Indicates the Year the Helmet was manufactured Indicates the month the Helmet was manufactured. October. The above information is not a definitive statement on the subject matter and is provided as a general outline. Professional advice should be sought before any action is taken in relation to the above subject matter outlined. AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND HEAD PROTECTION STANDARDS 101

36 HELMET MARKINGS The Scope of AS/NZS 1801:1997 standard specifies requirements for occupational protective helmets to protect wearers heads from falling objects in building and construction, quarrying, shipbuilding, forestry, and other industrial sectors with similar hazards. These requirements include the construction, materials used, mechanical strength and finish of both helmet shell and harness. All UniSafe helmet shells are made from premium impact resistant ABS plastic or polycarbonate. In compliance with the standards objectives, specifying safety helmets is dependent on hazards involved. AS/NZS 1801:1997 classifies safety helmets into three types: UniSafe Safety helmets: Type 1 General industrial safety helmets. Type 2 Helmets intended for high temperature workplaces. Type 3 Helmets intended for bushfire fighting. UniSafe helmets also incorporate additional design and performance that are over and above the requirements of the standard: AS/NZS 1801 Clause UniSafe Design Feature Type 1 - General Construction Type 2 - Hot Work Not Required Brim Available Option Available Option Not Required Retaining Chin Strap d Not Required Ventilation Available Option Required Type 2 Only Polycarbonate - Higher Heat Resistance Required Type 2 Only Helmet Shell Materials Flammability Required Type 2 Only Resistance to Ignition Not Required Replaceable Sweatband Not Required Earmuff Attachment (Non Brim Style) Not Required Visor Attachment (Non Brim Style) Not Required Neck Protectors (Sun & Heat) Available Option Available Option Not Required Multi-Point Harness Adjustment Not Required Electrical Conductivity All UniSafe helmets and UniSafe attachments are designed as a system, tested in combination to ensure they meet all performance criteria specified by the standards (AS/NZS Hearing and AS/NZS Eye and Face) and are guaranteed to wearers. HI-VIS HEADWEAR HELMET MARKINGS & HI-VIS HEADWEAR The importance of protecting employees and providing a safe work environment has seen an increase in the use of reflective and high visibility tapes. Whether it be on work clothing or personal protective equipment it is a common practice in the workplace. Its use on industrial safety helmets is wide spread and further improves personal safety, however it is important that the correct tape and configuration be selected. The working environment, hazards and lighting conditions all play a major role in the selecting the right tape. For example employees who wear an industrial safety helmet in varying light conditions may require an adhered tape that is highly visible during the day and capable of reflecting artificial light in dull or night conditions. An example of this is vehicle headlights (reference document AS/NZS1801:1997 clause 3.2.5). There are a number of different safety helmet tapes available and they are generally cut and shaped into various kit designs. The recommended width of the tape should be at least 25mm with an overall area sufficient to enhance personal protection. The tape adheres to the safety helmet in an integral manner and do not impact on the performance of the headwear. Adhesive tape types: Retro Reflective: These tapes are commonly used when working in dull or night conditions and reflect light (night). Retro Reflective/Fluorescent: Combination performance tape that provides high visual capabilities during the day and reflects light during the night (Day/Night). It is common to see the above tapes used on safety helmets in industries such as mining, transport, construction, forestry, Oil and Gas. Tapes applied by the safety helmet manufacturer ensure it is compatible, professionally adhered and meet any required regulatory performance requirements. The different types of tape and shapes have been designed to fit the contour of safety helmet shell, avoid any helmet accessories that maybe fitted and provide clear visibility in day/night conditions. It is very important to inspect the tape ensuring adhesion is maintained, no damage has occurred and the tape performs as it should. This inspection process also assists in maintaining the safety helmet it is adhered to. This simple inspection should be carried prior to every use. If any degradation to tape or safety helmet is evident it should be withdrawn from service and replaced. Used in conjunction with reflective clothing, safety helmets complete with day/night tape maximises worker safety in the workplace. 102

47 AUSTRALIAN/NEW ZEALAND RESPIRATORY PROTECTION STANDARDS Inhaling harmful substances can be potentially life threatening, as the toxins can enter the bloodstream along with oxygen. Taking the correct precautions is essential in protecting your respiratory system and preventing illness. The risk of harmful substances varies between different work and home applications. Selecting the appropriate respiratory protection is made easier by following the below Australian standards, which provide information on the selection, care and use of respiratory protection equipment. u AS/NZS Respiratory Protective Devices. The purpose of standard AS/NZS 1716 is to provide minimum performance and testing criteria to be observed in the manufacture of respiratory protective devices, setting out the parameters and requirements for the different types of respirators. Standards Australia AS/NZS Respiratory Protective Devices - SAI Global. u AS/NZS Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Equipment. The purpose of Standard AS/NZS 1715 is to provide users with information on selection, use and maintenance of suitable respiratory protective equipment for their needs, protecting the body against various substances which could enter the body through the respiratory system. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Standards Australia AS/NZS Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Equipment - SAI Global. WHY RESPIRATORY PROTECTION IS SO IMPORTANT! The lungs are a very vulnerable organ, this is where oxygen in the air enters the blood stream. If you inhale harmful substances, these may also enter the blood stream and can be transported to vital organs, including the kidneys, liver, spleen, heart, reproductive glands and the brain. It is extremely important to take the correct precautions to protect your health and well-being from possible exposure to harmful substances in different workplace/home applications. Hazards Dust Aerosols Smoke & Fume Gas & Vapour Oxygen Deficiency Material courtesy of SEA Group Dust usually causes annoying irritation to the respiratory tract, which results in coughing, sneezing, sore throat. However, dust can also contain toxic chemicals, asbestos, silica, lead etc. Aerosols or liquid dust in the form of a spray or a mist contains wet airborne particles. These particles are generated in spray painting, pesticide spraying, surface treatment and many other procedures. These aerosols may contain a wide variety of toxic substances which are damaging to the health. Smoke is the result of incomplete burning of flammable materials. Fumes are commonly formed when solid materials (especially metals) are heated. Welding and smelting are two areas where fumes commonly occur. Gases occur normally in gaseous form at room temperature. Vapours may be formed by evaporation of a liquid, or by the heating of various materials. Gases and vapours may be extremely toxic by themselves. They may also form hazardous compounds when heated or by coming into contact with other materials. This means that there is not enough oxygen in the air for a human to breathe. This causes unconsciousness, followed by tragic consequences if the lack of oxygen continues. Side Effects: Exposure to these substances can cause the following side effects: Lung damage (bronchitis, edema, pneumonia, etc). Damage to vital organs (kidneys, liver, brain, etc). Cardiovascular illness (heart conditions, blood disease, etc). Cancer. Permanent disabilities and chronic disease (asthma, silicosis, etc). Tragic consequences. 48 TYPES OF RESPIRATORS & TYPES OF FILTERS, USE & LIFESPAN TYPES OF RESPIRATORS Type Features How it Works Disposable Respirator Half Mask Filter Respirator Full Face Filter Respirator TYPES OF FILTERS, USE & LIFESPAN Material courtesy of SEA Group A face piece that covers the nose and mouth. A headband that keeps the respirator on the face. A face piece that covers the nose and mouth. A filter or filters. A system of one-way valves. A head harness that keeps the respirator securely on the face An inner mask that covers the nose and mouth. An outer mask with visor that covers the eyes and face. A filter or filters. A system of one-way valves. A head harness that keeps the respirator securely on the face Single use respirator, which when worn securely on the face reduces the exposure to airborne particle hazards. The valves enable the wearer to breathe in through the filter which cleans the contaminated air before it reaches the lungs. The air the wearer breathes out is then released through the exhalation valve(s) without any contaminated air leaking in. The valves enable the wearer to breathe in through the filter which cleans the contaminated air before it reaches the lungs. The air the wearer breathes out is released through the exhalation valve(s) without any contaminated air leaking in. The full face respirator not only filters out harmful materials from the air, but also protects the face and eyes from dust, gas, liquid splashes and impact. Type Features How it Works Types of Air Supply Supplied Air Respirator Face pieces with supplied air connection. Loose-fitting hoods, helmets or blouses with supplied air connection. A supplied air respirator is a respirator to which clean air is pumped through a hose or air line from a remote source. Filter Type Use Filter Life Particle filters Gas Filters/Cartridges Combination Filters/ Cartridges Protects only against particles, that is, dust, aerosols, smoke, mould, bacteria etc. A particle filter does NOT protect against gases and vapours. Protects only against gases and vapours. There are different kinds of gas filters/cartridges for different kinds of gases. A gas filter/cartridge does NOT provide protection against particles. Protects against both particles and gases. Different combination filter/cartridges are used depending on the gas or vapour present in the air. Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Carrying a bottle of clean, compressed air on the back. Supplied Air: Pumping clean air from a remote source through a hose to a mask or hood around the head. Fan-supplied Positive-Pressure Breath-Responsive Respirator (FPBR): A motor-driven fan which filters contaminated air and then supplies clean air at over-pressure to a mask. Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR): A motor-driven fan which draws contaminated air through a filter and then to the face. Some particle filters are single use such as filtering face pieces, and others are not and can be reused (these filters absorb more and more particles and will eventually clog, it will then become more difficult to breathe through the filter). Absorbs gas until they become saturated. After this, the filter will simply not absorb any more gas. There is no difference in breathing resistance, and it is unlikely that the user will be able to tell by smell or taste that the filter has become ineffective; the gas will just go right through the spent filter. This is why it is very important to replace gas filters/cartridges before the end of the filter lifetime. This has to be done according to a time schedule based on the type and concentration of the gas or vapour. Lifetime expires when either the particle component becomes clogged and hard to breathe through, or when the time is up for the gas component. 114

Safety breakaway mid section. Attaches to belt loops, pockets etc. Style: HG01 / Colours: Yellow, Orange Safety gloves are manufactured in a variety of materials. Each material is designed to protect the wearer against different risks or hazards. Natural Rubber Latex The oldest liquid-proof glove material. Excels at protecting the wearer from mild acids, alcohols, bases and most diluted solutions of chemicals. Commonly used in industrial apps, cleaning and food processing & handling. Nitrile Rubber Made from acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber & contains no latex proteins. Ideal for latex-sensitive individuals. Durable and resistant to cutting and punctures. High quality nitrile rubber also provides very good dry-grip and is impervious to oil, solvents and grease. Butyl Rubber Gas & liquid-tight material which provides good protection against strong acids. Recommended when air-tight protection is needed against gas & dust. Neoprene Rubber Superior protection against oils, acids, solvents and caustic chemicals. Less effective against abrasion & cuts than natural rubber or nitrile. Ideal for applications such as manufacturing, chemical handling and cleaning. Polyvinyl Acetate (PVA) Resistant to most chemicals & ketones, but are not recommended for use in water & alcohol. They protect well against snags, cuts, punctures & abrasion. PVA is the only material that provides protection against trichlorethylene. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Economical protection for workers exposed to chemicals, fats, oils, abrasion and punctures. PVC does not contain materials such as proteins & accelerators which can cause allergic reactions. Polyethylene (PE) Disposable, economical solution for protection in most food service & industrial applications. Polyurethane (PU) PU Coated gloves offer superior dexterity and perform well in alcohols, grease, animal fats, acids and bases, but is not recommended for use in organic solvents. Polyester/Cotton Blends allow the worker dexterity. These gloves are often coated with rubber, nitrile or other substances to improve grip and longevity. Polyester/ Cotton blends can also be used in unsupported gloves for lining, and for insulating properties. Other high performance materials such as DuPont Kevlar, Dyneema, Dynamax & Spectra are used where cut resistance and strength is of high importance. 58 EN STANDARDS GUIDE FOR GLOVES The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Australian/New Zealand Standards (AS/NZS) help classify specific product attributes and communicate the quality and protection levels of personal protection equipment. The standards are designed to assist managers in the provision and maintenance of workplace safety levels. The elimination of health and safety workplace hazards is mandated by government legislation. Where they cannot be eliminated, employers are responsible for reducing hazards to a minimum as is reasonably practical. As a result, they have implemented a number of identical standards to those used in Europe. For example, standard EN420 (AS/NZS :1998) - Occupational Protective Gloves, General Requirements - defines requirements for all protective gloves (except electrical and medical gloves) for glove construction, cleaning, comfort and efficiency, marking and information. While the majority of the Australian/New Zealand occupational glove standards are identical to the European standards, there are instances where the European standard has been revised, but the Australian/New Zealand standard has not been changed. This is why, for example, the protection against cold standard AS/NZS :1998 is not the same as the European cold standard EN511:2006. The requirements are similar but the two standards use different testing methodologies. EN Protection Standards Chemical Protection Cold Protection Mechanical Protection Low Chemical Resistance Radioactive Contamination Micro-Organisms Heat Protection Ionizing Radiation Above is a guide to pictograms used for the EN Standards. EXPLAINING THE THREE RISK CATEGORIES ACCORDING TO EN LEGISLATION The PPE directive 89/686/EEC specifies two classes of glove meeting two levels of risk: minimal and mortal or irreversible risk. A risk which falls between the two levels may be described as intermediate. A system of marking has been developed to identify the level of risk to help you select gloves of the appropriate class. Risk Category I: Gloves of Simple Design For Minimal Risk Only For gloves of simple design offering protection from low level risks, e.g. janitorial gloves, manufacturers are permitted to test and certify gloves internally (i.e. there is no requirement for testing and certification by an independent body). Risk Category II: Gloves of Intermediate Design For Intermediate Risk Gloves designed to protect against intermediate risk, e.g. general handling gloves requiring good cut, puncture and abrasion performance, must be subjected to independent testing and certification by a notified body. Only these approved bodies may issue a CE mark, without which the gloves may not be sold. Each notified body has its own identification number. The name and address of the notified body that certifies the product has to appear on the instructions for use that will accompany the gloves. Gloves of this category are CE marked as indicated. THE EN STANDARDS Risk Category III: Gloves of Complex Design For Irreversible Or Mortal Risk Gloves designed to protect against the highest levels of risk e.g. chemicals, must also be tested and certified by a notified body. In addition, the quality assurance system used by the manufacturer to guarantee homogeneity of production or the quality consistency testing of the final product must be independently checked. The body carrying out this evaluation will be identified by a number which must appear alongside the CE mark (in this case, 0493). Gloves of complex design are CE marked as indicated. 59 THE EN STANDARDS Standard EN420: General Requirements For Protective Gloves Relevant Australian Standard: AS/NZS :1998 Scope Definition Requirements This standard defines the general requirements for glove design and construction, innocuousness, comfort and efficiency, marking and information applicable to all protective gloves. This standard can also apply to arm guards. A glove is an item of personal protective equipment which protects the hand or any part of the hand from hazards. It may also cover part of the forearm and arm. Glove construction and design: Gloves have to offer the greatest possible degree of protection in the foreseeable conditions of end use. When seams are included, the strength of these seams should not reduce the overall performance of the glove. Standard EN374: Gloves Giving Protection from Chemicals and Micro-Organisms Relevant Australian Standard: AS/NZS :2005 Scope This standard specifies the capability of gloves to protect the user against chemicals and/or micro-organisms. The chemical resistant glove pictogram must be accompanied by a minimum three digit code. This code refers to the code letters of the chemicals (from a list of 12 standard defined chemicals), for which a breakthrough time of at least 30 minutes has been obtained. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Code Letter Chemical Cas Number Class A Methanol Primary Alcohol B Acetone Ketone C Acetonitrile Nitrile Compound D Dichloromethane Chlorinated Paraffin E Carbone Disulphide Sulphur Containing Organic Compound F Toluene Aromatic Hydrocarbon G Diethylamine Amine H Tetrahydrofurane Heterocyclic and Ether Compound I Ethyl Acetate Ester J N-Heptane Saturated Hydrocarbon K Sodium Hydroxide 40% Inorganic Base L Sulphuric Acid 96% Inorganic Mineral Acid Permeation Each chemical tested is classified in terms of breakthrough time (performance level 0 to 6). Measured Breakthrough Time Protection Index > 10 minutes Class 1 > 30 minutes Class 2 > 60 minutes Class 3 > 120 minutes Class 4 > 240 minutes Class 5 > 480 minutes Class 6 The low chemical resistant or waterproof glove pictogram is to be used for those gloves that do not achieve a breakthrough time of at least 30 minutes against at least three chemicals from the defined list, but which comply with the penetration test. The micro-organism pictogram is to be used when the glove conforms to at least a performance level 2 for the penetration test. Standard EN388: Gloves Giving Protection from Mechanical Risks Relevant Australian standard: AS/NZS :1998 Scope This standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, blade cut, puncture and tearing. Definition and Requirements Protection against mechanical hazards is expressed by a pictogram followed by four numbers (performance levels), each representing test performance against a specific hazard. The mechanical risks pictogram is accompanied by a four digit code: A. Abrasion Resistance Based on the number of cycles required to abrade through the sample glove. B. Blade Cut Resistance Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the sample at a constant speed. C. Tear Resistance Based on the amount of force required to tear the sample. D. Puncture Resistance Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standard-sized point. Material courtesy of THE EN STANDARDS 125

60 Standard EN388: Gloves Giving Protection from Mechanical Risks (continued) Test Performance Level Rating A. Abrasion Resistance (Cycles) ,000 8,000 - B. Blade Cut Resistance (Index) C. Tear Resistance (Newton) D. Puncture Resistance (Newton) In all cases above, 0 indicates the lowest level of performance. These performance levels must be prominently displayed alongside the pictogram on the gloves and on the packaging which immediately contains the gloves. Standard EN407: Gloves Giving Protection From Heat Relevant Australian Standard: AS/NZS :1999 Scope This standard specifies thermal performance for protective gloves against heat and/or fire. A B C D E F Flammability Resistance Contact Heat Resistance Convective Heat Resistance Radiant Heat Resistance Resistance To Small Splashes Of Molten Metal Resistance To Large Quantities Of Molten Metal Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Definition and requirements The nature and degree of protection is shown by a pictogram followed by a series of six performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities. The heat and flame pictogram is accompanied by a six digit number. Based on the length of time the material continues to burn and glow after the source of ignition is removed. The seams of the glove shall not come apart after an ignition time of 15 seconds. Based on the temperature range ( C) at which the user will feel no pain for at least 15 seconds. If an EN level 3 or higher is obtained, the product shall record at least EN level 3 in the flammability test. Otherwise, the maximum contact heat level shall be reported as level 2. Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat from a flame. A level of performance shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test. Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat when exposed to a radiant heat source. A performance level shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test. The number of molten metal drops required to heat the glove sample to a given level. A performance level shall only be mentioned if a performance level 3 or 4 is obtained in the flammability test. The weight of molten metal required to cause smoothing or pinholing across a simulated skin placed directly behind the glove sample. The test is failed if metal droplets remain stuck to the glove material or if the specimen ignites. Gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear. Standard EN511: Gloves Giving Protection From Cold Relevant Australian Standard: AS/NZS :1998 Scope This standard applies to any gloves to protect the hands against convective and contact cold down to -50 C. Definition and requirements Protection against cold is expressed by a pictogram followed by a series of three performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities. The cold hazard pictogram is accompanied by a three digit number. A B Resistance To Convective Cold Resistance To Contact Cold Performance Level 0 to 4 Performance Level 0 to 4 Based on the thermal insulation properties of the glove which are obtained by measuring the transfer of cold via convection. Based on the thermal resistance of the glove material when exposed to contact with a cold object. C Penetration By Water 0 or 1 0 = Water Penetration. 1 = No Water Penetration. All gloves must achieve at least performance level 1 for abrasion and tear. THE EN STANDARDS Standard EN421: Gloves Giving Protection from Radioactive Contamination and Ionising Radiation Relevant Australian Standard: AS/NZS :2002 To protect from radioactive contamination, the glove has to be liquid proof and needs to pass the penetration test defined in EN374. For gloves used in containment enclosures, the glove shall pass in addition a specific air pressure leak test. Materials may be modelled by their behaviour to ozone cracking. This test is optional and can be used as an aid to selecting gloves. To protect from ionising radiation, the glove has to contain a certain amount of lead or equivalent metal, quoted as lead equivalence. This lead equivalence must be marked on each glove. 67 WORKING SAFELY IN HOT CONDITIONS Many jobs require working in hot environments whether that be outdoors our indoors. As we head into summer, preventing heat stress is an important area to focus on for workplace safety. What is Heat Stress? Heat stress or heat illness occurs when the body cannot properly cool itself due to factors such as type of work (work load, work rate), environment (temperature, humidity, amount of air flow) and the individual (age, level of fitness, level of hydration, clothing worn etc). Effects of heat stress can range from rashes, cramps, exhaustion to heat stroke. Learn to recognise early symptoms of Heat Stress in yourself and co-workers Lack of co-ordination and altered judgement. Excessive fatigue or lethargy. Feeling dizzy or nauseous. Excessive sweating. Irritability. 5 simple steps to help minimise the risk of heat stress Below are some of the measures that can be taken: Educate employees on heat stress and provide supervision and first aid. Wear loose fitting, lighter clothing many workwear brands offer lighter weight fabric with high UV protection & venting features under arm and on the upper back. Wear protective equipment such as sunglasses, sunscreen, wide brim hats. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Stay well hydrated and minimise caffeine. Schedule harder physical tasks for cooler parts of the day and take regular breaks. There are many resources available to assist in preventing heat stress. The above information is only intended to raise awareness and is not meant to be a definitive guide. 70 CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Value for Money While economics obviously play an important role in every business decision, when it comes to issues of health and - in extreme cases - human life, cost should not be the primary factor determining the choice of protective garment. Protective Barrier Without doubt, the most important consideration is the suit s protective barrier. The material from which the suit is made must be proven to offer protection against all the hazardous substances to which the wearer could be exposed. One of the keys to employee safety is the provision of appropriate protective clothing. Selecting the right garment not only helps prevent injuries, but can also prevent long-term industry related illnesses. Quality In addition to the quality of the material used in the suit, the quality of workmanship is extremely important. Criteria here include seams, sizing and quality control. CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Physical Properties Many applications demand properties other than barrier performance from a protective suit, such as tear resistance and wear resistance. Comfort A good fit ensures a protective suit is both comfortable and capable of affording adequate protection to the wearer. Poorly fitting garments run an increased risk of tearing and restrict movement, which can adversely affect the wearer ability to carry out their work. 136

71 ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT PROTECTIVE GARMENT FOR YOUR NEEDS? The European Union has identified six levels of protection (Types) to facilitate the choice of chemical protective clothing. To carry the CE marking, chemical protective equipment (category III) must pass one or more of the garment Type tests, meet or exceed the minimum requirements for the materials physical and chemical properties, and be correctly identified and labelled. In addition, the products must be manufactured to a consistent quality, and the manufacturer must either hold a quality certificate such as ISO 9000, or be subject to regular inspections by the notified laboratory. Contamination by Radioactive Particles EN : Protective Clothing against radioactive contamination - Part 2: Requirements and test methods for non-ventilated protective clothing against particulate radioactive contamination. Chemical Protection Type 1 (Gaseous & Vapours) Type 1 / EN : Specifies the minimum requirements, test methods, marking and information supplied by the manufacturer for the following categories of ventilated/non-ventilated limited-use and reusable chemical protective suits, including component parts such as gloves and boots, which may be specified elsewhere. Type 1: Gas-tight chemical protective suit. Type 1a: Gas-tight chemical protective suit with a breathable air supply independent of the ambient atmosphere, e.g. a self-contained, open-circuit, compressed-air breathing apparatus, worn inside the chemical protective suit. Type 1b: Gas-tight chemical protective suit with an independent breathable air supply e.g. a self-contained, open-circuit, compressed-air breathing apparatus, worn outside the chemical protective suit. Type 1c: Gas-tight chemical protective suit with a breathable air system providing positive pressure, e.g. an airline. Type 1 / EN : Specifies the minimum requirements for the chemical protective suits used by emergency teams (ET), including component parts such as gloves and boots, which may be specified elsewhere. Type 2 / EN : Specifies the minimum requirements, test methods, marking and information supplied by the manufacturer for the following categories of ventilated/non-ventilated limited-use and reusable chemical protective suits, including component parts such as gloves and boots, which may be specified elsewhere. Type 2: non-gas-tight chemical protective suit. A non-gas-tight chemical protective suit with a breathable air system providing positive pressure. Type 3 (Liquids) EN : Specifies the minimum requirements for the following categories of limited-use and reusable chemical protective clothing: Full-body protective clothing with jet-tight connections between the different parts of the clothing (Type 3: liquid-tight clothing). Partial body protection garments offering protection against permeation of chemical liquids to specific parts of the body. Type 4 (Sprays) EN : Specifies the minimum requirements for the following categories of limited-use and reusable chemical protective clothing: Full-body protective clothing with spray-tight connections between the different parts of the clothing (Type 4: spray-tight clothing). Partial body protection garments offering protection against permeation of chemical liquids to specific parts of the body. Type 5 (Solid Particles & Fibres) EN ISO : Specifies the minimum requirements for chemical protective clothing resistant to penetration by airborne solid particles (Type 5). Type 6 (Light Sprays & Low-Volume Splashes) EN ISO : Specifies the minimum requirements for limited-performance, limited-use and reusable chemical protective clothing. Limited- performance chemical protective clothing is intended for use in cases of potential exposure to light sprays, liquid aerosols or lowpressure, low-volume splashes, which do not require a complete liquid permeation barrier (at molecular level). The CE Marking means that Chemical Protective clothing meets certain minimum requirements. However it does not mean that chemical suits of the same type offer the same level of protection performance. This is why it is essential to look at the results of the test carried out on the material used to make the garment. 72 ASBESTOS - A NATURAL FIBRE Asbestos is a material with numerous qualities which was used on a massive scale before being shown to be highly toxic. Prohibited for import and use across Australia since the end of 2003, it can still be found in many buildings and machines. Helping to keep workers in such environments safe, protective coveralls can provide durable, comfortable and robust protection against asbestos fibres. UNDERSTANDING THE DANGERS OF ASBESTOS Asbestos is the common name for several naturally occurring fibrous silicate minerals. Asbestos fibres are very heat resistant and strong and were used for many years in thermal insulating materials such as laggings and coatings, floor tiles, roofing, asbestos cement products, electrical insulating materials as well as vehicle clutch and brake linings. Since asbestos is a very friable material, microscopic fibres can release into the air in smaller or larger quantities. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can have serious health effects, including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. In Australia, a nationwide ban on importing and using all forms asbestos took effect on 31 December Reflecting the ban, the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) revised asbestos-related material to promote a consistent approach to controlling exposure to workplace asbestos and to introduce best-practice health and safety measures for asbestos management, control and removal. The ban did not cover asbestos materials or products already in use at the time the ban was implemented. Although Australia has only a third of the UK s population, its asbestos disease fatalities approximate Britain s of more than 3,000 people per year. MINIMISING THE RISK WHEN WORKING WITH ASBESTOS The European Council Directive 83/477/EEC on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work and its amendments, deals specifically with protecting workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work. Before any work is done, a comprehensive risk assessment has to be carried out and preventive measures have to be established. Employers have to provide the necessary organisation of work, appropriate equipment (including suitable personal protective equipment), safe systems of work, training, information, and supervision. Suitable personal protective equipment in general includes respiratory equipment, coverall, gloves and safety boots. CHOOSING APPROPRIATE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING Building maintenance and site remediation workers are at a high risk of coming into contact with the fibres when working on insulation in buildings and industrial installations such as pipes, roofs, walls etc. In order to avoid cross contamination, ie: Asbestos fibres attached to a person s skin or underwear are carried to uncontaminated places, released and then inhaled, protective coveralls must provide a high barrier against airborne particles (Category III EN Type 5 - The Type 5 product standard allows for an inward leakage of up to 15% in 8 out of 10 suits tested). They have to meet the following general requirements: WORKING WITH ASBESTOS High particle barrier (material, seams); Smooth surface to prevent particles from adhering to the garment; Tight fit at arm and leg openings (elasticated cuffs and ankles); Compatible with additional PPE (masks, goggles, gloves); and Comfortable to wear, high freedom of movement.
