Chapter 10 Respiratory Protec2on
Introduc2on Respiratory Protec2on Devices ( Respirators ) Protect the lungs which present the largest surface area of exposure. SCBA ALR or Supplied Air APR (Nega2ve and PAPR)
Selec2on Criteria Respiratory Protec2on Devices Flow Types Nega2ve Pressure Resp. Posi2ve Pressure Resp. Pressure Demand Air Con2nuous Flow
Selec2on Criteria Respiratory Protec2on Face Piece Types Full Face Half Mask ¼ Mask Escape Resp. Dust Mask
Cer2fica2on of Respirators Federal law requires that all respirators used are approved, but not all respirators are marked approved. Respirators are tested by NIOSH and if approved are jointly accepted by OSHA and MSHA. List of approved respirators can be found on the NIOSH web site.
Types of Respirators Cont. Air-Purifying Respirators Consist of a face piece and filtering device The filters can remove a specific contaminate They must be used in an atmosphere with oxygen that will support life. Must not be used in a IDLH condi2on Typical work in nega2ve pressure
Types of Respirators Cont. Air-Purifying Respirators Cont. Each filter canister is color coded For the chemical or class of chemical There are a limited number of canister
Types of Respirators Cont. Air-Purifying Respirators Cont. Filter canisters can operate in a limited range They also expire so check their specs Break through can occur and if the chemical does not have adequate warning proper2es the work would not know If you wise to upgrade your respiratory protec2on you should be able to.
Types of Respirators Cont. Air-Purifying Respirators Cont. Oxygen deficiency IDLH concentra2ons Entry into an unven2lated or confined area Firefigh2ng Situa2on requires a protec2on factor greater than 50 Presence of uniden2fied contaminants Contaminant concentra2ons unknown or exceeding designated maximum use concentra2on Iden2fied chemicals have inadequate or no warning proper2es One or more airborne contaminants that may be absorbed is shock- sensi2ve Presence of two or more incompa2ble contaminants onsite that might react in the cartridge or canister to produce a toxic or hazardous condi2on
Protec2on Factors is a number that is used to denote the overall level a respirator can provide. This number is theore2cal the difference between the concentra2on inside and outside the respirator. Table 10.2 Protec2on Factors Respirator Type Protec2on Factor Half face respirator 50 Full face respirator 100 Airline respirator 1,000 SCBA 10,000
Using the Protec2on Factor (PF) To determine if a respirator is adequate for protec2on PF x PEL > Concentra2on = OK PF x PEL < Concentra2on = Upgrade Review Table 10.1
Air-line Respirators (ALRs) provide AIR, never oxygen to the face piece of the wearer. Types of ALRs Posi2ve Pressure, Nega2ve Pressure, Con2nuous-Flow Systems ALRs must be used with a escape boble in IDLH ALRs suitable for compressed air are classified as Type C They must be designed to prevent other gas bobles from connec2ng
Air-line Respirators (ALRs) Some pros and cons of ALRs. ALRs impair workers mobility and can tangle ALRs hose can be cut or punctured Can be blocked by heavy equipment Air compressors can be can be limited by the air it is Filters or sorbents can fail
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA SCBA consists of a face piece and an air source carried by the user The only respirator approved for an IDLH environment Typical reserved for the most hazardous work such as handling hazardous waste or work in the contaminated zone. See Table 10.3
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA Escape SCBA are typically hoods that can be places over the head SCBA can come in two forms open circuit and closes circuit Breathing air for SCBA or Airline MUST be level D
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus SCBA Breathing air for SCBA or Airline MUST be level D Oxygen between 19.5 and 23.5 Hydrocarbon Concentra2on < 5 mg/m^3 Carbon Monoxide < 20 ppm Carbon Dioxide < 1000 ppm No Odor
Respirator Fit Test When one must relay on respirator a secure fit is important on a posi2ve-pressure respirator but essen2al when dealing with a nega2ve-pressure respirator.
Respirator Fit Test Qualita2ve fit tests relay on a reac2on of the wearer to be honest, which has its weakness.
Respirator Fit Test Quan2ta2ve fit tests relay on a measurement by equipment. The results provide a number Protec2on Factor.
Each 2me you don and doff your respirator Inspect the respirator Clean the respirator Preform a posi2ve test Preform a nega2ve test
Storage Cleaning and Inspec2on Respirators must be stored properly Clean, in a storage bag, out of sunlight, away from chemicals, dust, and extreme temperature Inspect respirators each use Look at rubber pieces for cracks and tears Wash respirators Wash the respirator each use, sani2ze each use Never use a respirator with out medical surveillance and Resp. Protec2on Program
Review Respiratory protec2on is designed to protect the respiratory system to the worker. Workers tend not to wear respirators when they can not see the the hazards. Training, proper selec2on, fit tests, medical surveillance, record keeping, are all part of effec2ve respiratoryprotec2on program.
