The packaging is biodegradable. General Instructions for 30v Machines Good Working Practices/Safety The following suggestions will enable you to observe good working practices, keep yourself and fellow workers safe and maintain your tools and equipment in good working order.! WARNING!! KEEP TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT OUT OF THE REACH OF YOUNG CHILDREN Primary Precautions Most small single phase equipment is supplied with a moulded 3 Amp. Plug and 3 core power cable. Before using the equipment inspect the cable and the plug to make sure that neither are damaged. If any damage is visible have the equipment inspected/repaired by a suitably qualified person. If it is necessary to replace the plug, it is preferable to use an 'unbreakable' type that will resist damage on site. Only use a 3 Amp plug, and make sure the cable clamp is tightened securely. Fuse as required. If extension leads are to be used, carry out the same safety checks on them, and ensure that they are correctly rated to safely supply the current that is required for your machine. The same general precautions apply to 'portable' 3 phase equipment. Work Place/Environment Most equipment is not designed for outdoor use, do not use when or where it is liable to get wet. If the equipment is to be used outside and it starts to rain (unusual though this would be in U.K.), stop work and move it inside. If equipment has got wet; dry it off as soon as possible, with a cloth or paper towel. Do not use 30Va.c. powered equipment anywhere within a site area that is flooded or puddled, and do not trail extension cables across wet areas. Keep the equipment clean; it will enable you to more easily see any damage that may have occurred. Clean equipment with a damp soapy cloth if needs be, do not use any solvents or cleaners, as these may cause damage to the any plastic parts or to the electrical components. Keep the work area as uncluttered as is practical, this includes personnel as well as material.! Under no circumstances should CHILDREN be allowed in work areas. It is good practice to leave the equipment unplugged until work is about to commence, also make sure to unplug the equipment when it is not in use, or unattended. Always disconnect by pulling on the plug body and not the cable. It is also recommended that you use switched outlet supplies. Make sure you are comfortable before you start work, balanced, not reaching etc.,
4 04 General Instructions for 30v Machines (Continued) Illustrated Parts Catalogue and Parts Breakdown 3 Wear the appropriate safety clothing, goggles, gloves, masks etc., consideration should be given to the removal of rings and wristwatches, if these are liable to be a 'snag' hazard. It you are working in an area or on a task that requires the movement of heavy objects, make sure you have 'toe protecting non-slip footwear', etc. DO NOT use mains powered equipment within the designated safety areas of flammable liquid stores or in areas where there may be volatile gases. There are very expensive, very specialised machines for working in these areas. Above all, OBSERVE. make sure you know what is happening around you, and USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. General precautions for welding operations! Ensure you have fire extinguishers readily available. If you are welding in a booth or permanent enclosure, be aware that noxious fumes can be generated, ensure that it is well lit and there is adequate ventilation, if heavy amounts of fumes are being produced, forced air ventilation or a respirator is required. No Description Unit Front lens retainer Front cover lens Auto-Darkening welding filter Helmet Headgear nut Positioning washers Positioning washers Limitation washers (R&L) Positioning washers QTY Supplied as Spare Part Number If you are using a mobile enclosure follow the same guide lines. Ensure you are using the correct 'stick' or wire size and type for the welding you are carrying out. If you are using compressed gas (of any description) exercise caution when handling the cylinders, do not open or 'crack' cylinders using in-appropriate tools. Check cylinders for fault leaks and if flammable gas or oxygen, isolate and quarantine the cylinder, and allow to 'bleed' out or arrange expert disposal. 0 3 Bolts Front headband Adjustable headband Dark shade adjusting knob 0043 If you are using flammable gas, you must have non-return valves fitted. Have pressure gauges checked and, if necessary, recalibrated regularly Check all hose lines for leaks. Leaks are not so much a problem with IG's but can be expensive if not corrected, or, if the leak is severe and insufficient gas is arriving at the nozzle to flood the weld area, severe oxidisation can occur, ruining the weld. Arc Welding If you are electro-welding, do not be tempted to 'over cook' by turning the current up too high. Ensure that you have adequate eye protection. Ensure that you are wearing the correct protective clothing, overalls, gloves, etc., DO NOT weld 'overhead' without the upper part of the body, hands and wrists and your head adequately protected. Ensure you have established a good solid current return for your workpiece. Secondary arcs and flashes can ruin a job. If you are welding in an area populated by other workers and do not have a mobile enclosure; have the courtesy to establish an alert, calling Eyes, Arc,.Striking,. or similar to forewarn colleagues that an unshielded arc is about to be struck.

6 06 Parts Identification and Description Helmet Auto-Darkening Lens Filter Front Protection Lens Front Protection Lens Retainer Solar Cell Array Sensors A light-weight full face covering moulding, with a specifically moulded aperture to accept the lens/auto-darkening unit, and fixing points for the head strap assembly. A totally self contained, electro-optical unit that is fitted into the helmet. It is not repairable, and the only changeable item is the front protection lens that protects the unit lens proper. A clear plastic changeable lens which protects the auto-darkening lens filter. Change this lens when it becomes badly scratched, badly discoloured or damaged. A clip frame that holds the front protection lens in place. This is the power source for the helmet. The cells will pick up any sunlight as well as the u/v generated during the welding process to generate the power required for the helmet operation. Keep the front panel of the array clean to allow optimum operation of the cells. The expected operational life of the cells under normal conditions is in excess of 4000 hours. Two small photo-electric sensors, located in the front face of the helmet; I know, I know, they would be pointless mounted in the back of the helmet. These sensors detect the rapid increase in light o/p from the struck arc, and initiate the darkening of the screen. Dark Level This knob allows you to set the dark level of the helmet to between 9-3 Adjusting Knob (DIN), depending on the requirement for the job in hand; obviously, the higher the light intensity generated by the arc, the higher the setting required. Welding Mode Normally the selection switch will be pushed over to the right hand side. This Selection Switch covers most welding applications, MMA, MAG, MIG and TIG where the working current of the operation is greater than 0 Amps. For lower current TIG operation the switch should be pushed to the left hand side. This brings the 'Clear level adjusting knob' into operation, and allows you some control over the 'switch point' at which the screen will darken. Clear level Adjusting Knob Adjustable Head Strap Note the switch must be in the right hand side position to activate the 'auto-off' function. This knob allows you to set the level to which you require the screen to 'lighten' to allow you to see the work, prior to and immediately after welding. It is only active during the low current selected function. Very useful if you are working with light current on a highly reflective material ( e.g. stainless sheet) under strong ambient or artificial light. The recommended setting is JUST the bright side of the 'switch point'. If you have the control set to 'too bright' the helmet can have difficulty judging the 'switch point' and may not respond quickly enough to protect your eyes. Take Heed. A composite plastic head strap assembly, anchored to the helmet. The side 'anchoring knobs' can adjust the friction level controlling the helmet movement according to your personal preference. The rear 'turnbuckle' knob allows the head strap to be set to your hat size, or tightened onto your head as preferred. It is assumed you will have set up the job and the welding equipment. Exposing the solar cells/sensors to light will have switched the filter unit On. 0perating Instructions Check the selector switch is in the correct position for the welding you are about to carry out. Check the dark level control is set correctly. (If you are unsure about the level setting; there is a chart with suggested settings on the following page. If you are still unsure, always set to the darkest level and reduce the setting to optimum by trial and error). Check the front protective lens cover is clean and relatively undamaged, (scratches, cracks, spatter patterns, fume discolouration etc.,) if the screen is too damaged/dirty; change it. Remember, it is not only obscuring your view of the weld, it is preventing full light falling on the solar cells and the sensors. Put the helmet on and adjust the head strap and the side friction clamps to suit. Pull the shield down in front of your face, you should be able to see clearly through the aperture, strike and the lens should darken immediately. If it does not:- a) Check the switch settings are correct, b) Expose the solar cells to a light source for a few moments (directly against a lamp or out in the sun light), on the chance that the power pack is depleted. Recheck the function. As soon as the arc is struck, the lens will darken, check that your eyes feel comfortable with the dark level you have selected, if not, reset. Proceed with the welding, check that when the arc is off, the lens clears allowing you clear sight of the workpiece. When you have finished welding remove the helmet, (DO NOT PUT DOWN ON THE HOT SURFACE) and place face down. (This will switch the electronics Off). DO NOT use the helmet if the lens unit is inoperative. Hints and Tips The unit can be stored in a dry, well ventilated environment between -0 C ~ +70 C. DO NOT store in direct sunlight. Keep the front protective lens cover clean. If you require to clean the front of the solar array and the lens unit proper, use a clean lint free cloth, or lens tissue. DO NOT use solvents or chemicals on any part of the helmet or the lens unit. DO NOT immerse the lens unit in any liquid. The lens unit is not repairable.
7 0 Using the Auto-Darkening Welding Helmet Illustration and Parts Description 07 General overview This helmet is a light weight piece of apparatus, designed to provide adequate eye protection during arc welding operations. This protection is achieved by electronically causing the optical lens to rapidly obscure. The obscuration is triggered and maintained whilst the controlling sensors are subjected to extreme bright light. When the light source is removed, the lens will return to a 'clear' state so that the task can be viewed. This precludes the necessity of constantly lifting the visor of the helmet, or removing it. As this could tend to lead to the helmet being worn for lengthy periods of time, the whole was made as 'light weight' as possible. This light weight construction is achieved at a cost to 'robustness' which means that you may not wear the helmet in place of a site 'hard hat'. Neither is the helmet to be used in place of adequate eye protection when grinding. Solar Cell Array The helmet electronics have an auto On/Off system. This is activated when the solar cells/sensors are shielded or exposed to 'light'. The selector switch should be pushed to the right hand side. Typ. side anchoring knob Selector Switch Helmet Lifting the helmet up should switch it on. When work is finished, the helmet should be placed 'face down' or in a box or cupboard that prevents light falling on the solar cells/sensors. This will switch the helmet off. Note The helmet does not provide adequate protection against LASER light frequencies. Sensors Auto-Darkening lens filter Dark level adjusting knob Front protection lens Front protection lens retainer
