POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS INFORMATION Routes of Exposure: Inhalation Acetylene is a flammable gas, concentration up the LEL 0f ppm may cause suffocation by displacing the oxygen in air. Exposure to oxygen deficient atmosphere ( 12-16% ) may cause breathing and pulse rate increased, muscular coordination slightly disturbed. Use water spray to cool fire-exposed cylinders, structures and equipment. Special Fire Fighting Instructions simply to let the burning gas escape from the pressurized cylinder or piping system. If possible, stop the leak before extinguishing fire. If the fire is extinguished before the leak is sealed, the still-leaking Acetylene could explosively re-ignite without warning and cause extensive damage, injury, or fatality. Structural fire-fighters must wear Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and full protective equipment. Because of the potential for cylinder rupture, evacuation of non-emergency personnel is essential. If water is

3 not available for cooling or protection of cylinders and exposures, evacuate the area. Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards Acetylene is extremely flammable and can readily form explosive mixtures with air over a very wide range. An explosion hazard exists in confined spaces when the gas is released. An explosive decomposition of pure acetylene can occur under certain conditions of elevated pressure, temperature and container size. Handling and Storage Precautions To Be Taken In Storage: Store and use with adequate ventilation. Cylinders should be stored upright with valve protection cap in place and firmly secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Protect cylinders from physical damage; do not drag, slide or drop. Do not allow storage area temperature to exceed 52 C. Full and empty cylinders should be segregated. Post No Smoking/No Open Flames signs in storage and use areas. Cylinders should be separated from oxygen cylinders, or other oxidizers, by a minimum distance of 20 ft., or by a barrier of non-combustible material at least 5 ft. high, having a fire-resistance rating of at least 0.5 hours. Isolate from other incompatible chemicals It is important to note that Acetylene, in its free state, under pressure, may decompose violently. The higher the pressure, the smaller the initial force necessary to cause a reaction. Therefore, never use Acetylene outside the cylinder at pressures in excess of 15 psig. If pressures exceeding this limit are utilized, special explosion and fire safety precautions must be implemented. Keep the smallest amount on-site as is necessary Precautions To Be Taken In Handling: Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Never attempt to lift a cylinder by its valve protection cap. If user experiences any difficulty operating cylinder valve discontinue use and contact supplier. Use an adjustable strap wrench to remove overtight or rusted caps. Never strike an arc on a compressed gas cylinder or make a cylinder a part of an electrical circuit. For additional precautions in using Acetylene, see Other Information, e.g. CGA (Compressed Gas Association), EIGA (European Industrial Gas Association), etc. Protective Practices During Maintenance of Contaminated Equipment: Follow practices indicated in Section Accidental Release Measures. Make certain application equipment is locked and tagged-out safely. Purge Acetylene-handling equipment with inert gas (i.e. nitrogen) before attempting repairs. Always use product in areas where adequate ventilation is provided.

4 Exposure Control / Personal Protection ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Ventilation Natural or mechanical to prevent oxygen-deficient atmospheres under 19.5% oxygen Respiratory Protection: Maintain oxygen levels above 19.5% in the workplace. Use supplied air respiratory protection if oxygen levels are below 19.5% or during emergency response to a release of this product. During an emergency situation, before entering the area, check for flammable gas level as well as oxygen-deficient atmospheres. If respiratory protection is required, follow the requirements of the Federal OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard (29 CFR ), or equivalent State standards. General Use Emergency Use required Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or positive pressure airline with mask are to be used in oxygen-deficient atmosphere. Air purifying respirators will not function. Do not pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind or expose containers to heat or sources of ignition. Incompatibility (Materials to avoid) Oxidizers (Acetylene is not compatible with the following materials: Strong oxidizers (i.e. chlorine, bromine pentafluoride, oxygen, oxygen difluoride, and nitrogen trifluoride); calcium hypochlorite; various heavy metals (copper, silver, mercury, brass with a copper content exceeding 65%) and the salts of these metals; halogens (bromine, chlorine, iodine, fluorine); hydrides (i.e. sodium hydride, cesium hydride); ozone; perchloric acid; potassium.) Acetylene does not have effect on ozone-depleting chemicals. Acetylene is not listed as a marine pollutant. Any adverse effect on animals would be related to Oxygen deficient environments and the anaesthetic properties of Acetylene at high concentrations of exposure. No adverse effect is anticipated to occur to plant- life.

6 Disposal Consideration Waste Disposal Method: Do not attempt to dispose of residual or unused quantities. For emergency disposal, discharge slowly to the atmosphere in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Disposal of this product, solutions and any by-products should always comply with the requirements of environmental protection and waste disposal legislation and any regional local authority requirements. This material and its container must be disposed of in a safe way. Empty containers or liners may retain some product residues. Do not puncture or incinerate container. Containers should be transported in a secure position, in a well- ventilated truck. The transportation of compressed gas cylinders in automobiles or in closedbody vehicles can present serious safety hazards and should be discouraged. Ensure vehicle driver is aware of the potential hazards of the load and knows what to do in the event of an accident or an emergency. Other Information Special Precautions Use piping and equipment adequately designed to withstand pressures to be encountered. Use a check valve or other protective apparatus in any line or piping from the cylinder to prevent reverse flow. To prevent cryogenic liquids or cold gas from being trapped in piping between valves the piping shall be equipped with pressure relief devices. NFPA health hazard : 0 - Exposure under fire conditions would offer no hazard beyond that of ordinary combustible materials. NFPA fire hazard (flammability) : 4 - Will rapidly or completely vaporize at normal pressure and temperature, or is readily dispersed in air and will burn readily. NFPA reactivity : 2 - Normally unstable and readily undergo violent decomposition but do not detonate. Also: may react violently with water or may form potentially explosive mixtures with water. ** NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). Fumes and gases produced during welding and cutting processes can be dangerous to your health and may cause serious lung disease. KEEP YOUR HEAD OUT OF FUMES. DO NOT BREATHE

7 FUMES AND GASES. Use enough ventilation, local exhaust, or both to keep fumes and gases from your breathing zone and the general area. Short-term overexposure to fumes may cause dizziness, nausea, and dryness or irritation of the nose, throat, and eyes; or may cause other similar discomfort. Contaminants in the air may add to the hazard of fumes and gases When two or more gases or liquefied gases are mixed, their hazardous properties may combine to create additional, unexpected hazards. Obtain and evaluate the safety information for each component before you produce the mixture. Consult an Industrial Hygienist or other trained person when you make your safety evaluation of the end product. Remember, gases and liquids have properties which can cause serious injury or death. Final determination of suitability of any material is the sole responsibility of the user. All materials may present unknown hazards and should be used with caution. Although certain hazards are described herein, we cannot guarantee that these are the only hazards that exist.
