2 GENERAL SAFETY RULES WARNING! Read and understand all instructions. Failure to follow all instruction listed below, may result in electrical shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS Work Area. Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presences of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks, which may ignite the dust or fumes.. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to loose control. Electrical Safety 4. Double insulated tools are equipped with a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). This plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install a polarized outlet. Do not change the plug in any way. Double insulation eliminates the need for the three wire grounded power cord and grounded power supply system. 5. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerator. There is an increased risk of electrical shock if your body is grounded. 6. Don't expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electrical shock. 7. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull the plug from the outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electrical shock. 8. When operating a power tool outside, use an outdoor extension cord marked "W-A" or "W". These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electrical shock. Personal Safety 9. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. 0. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts.. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents.. Remove adjusting keys or switches before turning the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury.. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations. 4. Use safety equipment. Always wear eye protection. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. Tool Use And Care 5. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. 6. Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be replaced. 7. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustment, changing accessories or storing the tool. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Rewinding The Spool (Figure 9). Follow procedures on page 9 to remove and replace the spool.. Clean and inspect spool housing, spool, spring and trimmer head. Replace any worn or damaged parts.. Fold approximately ' of new.065 diameter nylon monofilament trimmer line in half. 4. Insert the loop end of the line into the one of two holding slots () in the center rail of the spool (). 5. Wind the lines in tight even layers in the direction of the arrow on the back of the spool. Be sure the each section of the spool contains a separate line segment. Note: Failure to wind line in the proper direction or crossing the lines between spool segments will prevent the bump-feed feature from working correctly. 6. When only 8" - 0" of line remains to be wound, insert the lines into two of the holding slots in the outer rail of the spool. 7. Replace spool. 0 Figure 9. Spool. Line. Holding Slots ACCESSORIES. 3 Replacing The Spool (Figure 8). Hold the trimmer head (5) with one hand and push the spool housing () inward to open. Remove spool housing with spool () from trimmer head.. Remove the old spool from spool housing.. Clean and inspect spool housing, spring (4) and trimmer head. Replace any worn or damaged parts. 4. Insert the ends of the lines () on the new spool through the eyelets in the spool housing. 5. Place the new spool in the spool housing. While holding the spool and housing together, pull firmly on the lines to release them from the holding slots. 6. Slide the spool and housing over the spring and align tabs on spool housing with corresponding slots in trimmer head. Press down until seated in bottom of trimmer head. 7. Push spool housing inward to lock. Figure Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. 9. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools, with sharp edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. 0. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that affect the tools operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools.. Use only Accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that are suitable for one tool may become hazardous when used on another tool. Service. Tool service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in risk of injury.. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance instructions may create a risk of electric shock or injury. Extension Cords. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. Table shows the Correct size to use depending on cord length and nameplate Ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord.. Spool Housing. Line. Spool 4. Spring 5. 4 Specific Safety Rules. Do not operate tool while standing in water, with wet hands or in the rain. Do not operate tool in low light conditions.. Always grip tool with both hands, wear safety glasses or goggles that meet ANSI Z87. standards, wear heavy gloves, long pants and boots when operating this tool.. Keep hands, feet and legs clear of cutting line. Do not reach under cutting line area until unit has come to a complete stop! This may take several seconds after switch is turned off. Never carry or lift tool by the cutting line. Never try to stop any parts when they are moving. 4. Do not hold material to be cut or removed cut material when cutting line is moving. 5. Always disconnect from power supply when removing jammed material from cutting line. 6. Do not modify tool, guards or supplied accessories in any way. 7. Use only 0.065" diameter genuine nylon monofilament replacement line. Never use wire, rope, metal reinforced line, etc.. Do not use blades or other rigid cutting attachments. Do not operate trimmer without proper line installed and both lines extended. 8. Avoid body contact with grounded conductors such as metal fences or pipes. There is an increased risk of electrical shock if your body is grounded. 9. Remove sticks, rocks, broken glass or other debris from the work area that could be thrown or entangled in the trimmer. 0. Keep ventilation ports clear of debris.. Keep bystanders, children, pets and visitors outside a minimum 50-foot (5M) radius while operating the trimmer. If approached, stop trimmer immediately. Keep the grip dry, clean and free from oil and grease.. Store trimmer indoors in an area where children or untrained personnel will not have access. 4. Do not use cleaning agents or solvents that could attach the plastic parts of the tool. Line Maintenance Trimmer is supplied with a pre-wound.065" diameter dual line spool. When line replacement is necessary the quickest most convenient method is to install a new pre-wound spool. The alternative method is to rewind the existing spool. GENERAL TRIMMING TIPS Before Use: Clear area to be trimmed of debris, dead limbs, branches, etc... before starting. Check your trimmer; clear any debris from motor housing vents. Check for loose, broken or damaged parts and guards are in place. Make trimmer adjustments; configure grip, trimmer head, D-handle, etc.. to best suit the intended job. During Use: Hold the trimmer close but not touching the ground. Angle the head slightly to the left and front so that only the tips of the lines make contact. Cut from right to left when possible so that clippings are direct away from operator. Do not rest trimmer head on ground while trimming. Excessive line usage and trimmer head wear will result. Do not force trimmer into heavy or thick vegetation, work in slowly. Trim only when grass and weeds are dry. When trimming around solid objects (trees, fences, foundations etc..) use only the tip of the line to do the trimming. Contact with the side of the line will increase line wear and may overload the motor. When edging or trimming use the edge guide to maintain distance and keep the housing from contact with the ground. In tall grass (over 6") trim in multiple passes working from the top to bottom. When trimming on an incline work from the bottom up. Do not trim hedges, trees or other woody vegetation. Do not use with trimmer head above waist high. 8

5 Adjusting The Trimmer Head Angle (Figure 6) The cutting angle of the trimmer head can be adjusted to any of 4 positions to best fit the user and application.. Depress the trimmer head adjustment button () to release. Rotate the motor housing () to the desired angle.. Release the trimmer head adjustment button () and rotate motor housing () until it locks into place. CAUTION: Do not attempt to adjust trimmer head angle while trimmer is in use. Do not operate trimmer until head angle adjustment lock is engaged. Adjusting Trimmer Line Length (Fig 7) The "Bump-Feed" dual line trimmer head allows the cutting line to be extended without stopping the motor.. To release more line, lightly bump the trimmer head on the ground while operating the trimmer at full speed. Each bump will release approximately " of trimmer line from the spool. The line length cutter () will automatically cut the line at the proper length. Note: For best results, keep trimmer line fully extended. Bump line release is less reliable as the line gets shorter.. If no line is released, try again on bare ground or hard surface. If no line is released again, turn the trimmer Off and disconnect from the power source. After trimmer head () has stopped manually pull on both lines. If the line does not advance, proceed to Maintenance section of manual. Figure 6. Trimmer Head Adjustment Button. 6 Assembly Installing Edge Guide & Guard (Figure) WARNING: RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. ALWAYS DISCONNECT TOOL FROM POWER SOURCE BEFORE MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENT, INSTALLING OR CHANGING ACCESSORIES. Never operate trimmer with damaged or missing guard.. Remove the four screws () from trimmer head. Place guard () over trimmer head so that it is flush with the mounting surface. Secure with screws (). Note: large side of guard faces grip.. Remove edge guide screws (4) from front of guard (). Align edge guide () with holes in front (small side) of guard and replace screws to secure. Note: Bend in edge guide should be away from line. Adjusting The D-Handle (Figure ). Rotate the D-handle adjustment knob () counterclockwise several revolutions.. While holding the trimmer in the operating position, adjust the D-handle () to the location that provides the best grip and control.. Rotate the D-handle adjustment knob () clockwise to tighten. Test the D-handle to make sure it is secure before using the trimmer. Adjusting The Shaft Length (Figure ) The shaft length of trimmer can be adjusted to any of 5 operational lengths to best fit the user or for storage (fully collapsed).. Push the shaft adjustment button () down to release. Move the shaft to the desired location.. Release the shaft adjustment button () and pull or push the shaft until it locks into place. CAUTION: Do not attempt to adjust shaft length while trimmer is in use. Do not operate trimmer until shaft adjustment lock is engaged. 5 Figure Figure. D-Handle Adjustment Knob. D-Handle Figure. Shaft Adjustment Button 4. Guard. Edge Guide. Guard Screw 4. Edge Guide Screw Adjusting The Grip (Fig. 4) The grip on the trimmer can be adjusted 80 degree from the trimming position for edging.. Depress the grip rotation button () to release. Rotate the grip () counter-clockwise 80 degrees.. Release the grip rotation button () and twist the grip () until it locks into place. Reverse procedure to return grip to the trimmer location. CAUTION: Do not attempt to adjust grip while trimmer is in use. Do not operate trimmer until grip adjustment lock is engaged. OPERATION 6 Figure 4. Grip Rotation Button. Grip WARNING: Always hold the tool with both hands, use the front handle and grip to maintain control of the tool. Keep hands and feet clear of line. Never carry or lift tool by the line. Never try to stop the line when moving. Do not hold material to be cut or removed cut material when lines are moving. Always disconnect from power supply when removing jammed material from line, spool or when making adjustments or changing line. Turn the tool off immediately and do not operate, until repaired, if tool speed drops abnormally low, begins to make abnormal noise, vibrations, or if the motor housing produces smoke or burning odor. On/Off Switch (Figure 5). Connect the power cord () to a qualified 0V~60Hz AC power source. Use only UL listed, outdoor extension cord as specified in the Safety Rules section of manual.. To start the trimmer, depress the safety button () and squeeze the On-Off switch (). To stop, release the switch.. Hold the trimmer by the D- handle and grip with the line facing away. 4.
