4 1. INTRODUCTION Model AVP-30D automates the Reid Vapor Pressure Test Prescribed in ISO 3007, ASTM D323 and other equivalent test Methods for crude oil as well as fuel oil. AVP-30D takes Demi size bombs with 60% in total length and 30% in volume compared to the regular full size bombs, against which precise correlation has been proven. 2. STRUCTURE Model AVP-30D takes as compact one piece design, which consists of 3 sections : Control Section, Bath Section and Connecting Housing. 3. INSTALLATION Install the tester on a level and stable bench. It is recommended that the installation site be selected adjacent to a sink for easy draining,, cleaning and pouring of water. Also, it is necessary to leave a room of at least 30cm to the right of the tester to accommodate a mercury manometer for calibration. AVP-30D takes a single-phase electric power with a minimum of 1.5 kw capacity. 4. PREPARATION OF TESTER 4.1 Connection AC Power Cable Connect the Power Cable to an wall receptacle. The Power Cable is a three wire type with its black wire being the ground. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: PLEASE MAKE SURE TO MAKE THE GROUND CONNECTION FOR THE SAFETY. - 1-

5 4.1.2 Bath Section to Control Section Connect the cables for Heater, Temperature Sensor, Bomb Cradle Motor, Stirrer Motor, Water Level Sensor, and Pressure Sensors. The receptacles for these cables are located in the back of the Control Section Pressure Sensor Adapters and Connecting Pipes Roll a piece of Teflon tape around the PT1/8 screw at the tip of Pressure Sensor Adaptor, then secure the Connecting Pipe coupler. 4.2 Cleaning Water Bath and pouring water Open the drain valve located near the bottom of the Bath, and then rinse the Bath with clean water. Close the valve to fill the Bath with tap water, or possibly ion exchanged water, to approximately 3cm below the top of the Bath. (Approx. 38 litters) Since the operating temperature is 37.8, it saves time if warm water of 37 is poured. 4.3 Setting bath temperature Turn on the MAIN switch Press the BATH CTRL switch to activate temperature controller. The ON indicator lamp illuminates in green. (*1) As the temperature reading reached 37.8, check the temperature with a thermometer. (*2) note *1 : BATH CTRL switch needs to be pressed to start temperature control; RESET switch stops this function. *2 : At the factory, the Bath temperature is preset to should the Bath temperature needs to be either altered or adjusted, please consult Tanaka distributor

6 4.4 Preheating Air Chambers After thoroughly cleaning the inside wall of the Air Chamber with clean water, set it to Air Chamber Rack with its opening downward. Preheat the Chamber in the Bath for at least 7 minutes. 4.5 Precooling Sample Chambers After thoroughly cleaning the inside wall of the Sample Chamber with clean water, submerge it in chilled water of 0-1 with its opening upward to precool for at least 7 minutes. 5. TEST PROCEDURE 5.1 Confirmation before setting samples Test time : typically 10 minutes Bath temperature : typically Pressure reading in the ambient : 0. If not zero, press ZERO switch to reset. 5.2 Setting samples Take out the chilled Samples Chamber and drain off the water. Quickly fill the Sample Chamber with chilled sample using sampling apparatus. Then, quickly take out the preheated Air Chamber and drain it, and securely connect it to the Sample Chamber. This series of procedures needs to be performed within 20 seconds. Inconsistency and poor accuracy through this procedure affects on the test precision in a great degree. Since the Air Chamber is equipped with a quick-type coupler with stop plug, vapor does not leak once the Air Chamber is connected to the Sample Chamber.

NOTE: It has been known that slight inconsistency or inaccuracy through this sampling procedure affects on the test precision in a great degree. 5.3 Making Connecting Pipe connection Connect the quick coupler socket at the end of the Connecting pipe to the quick coupler plug on the Bomb. After pulling down the knurled ring of the socket, set it to the plug and force it in. The plug and socket shall be locked with the stop plug open. 5.4 Setting Bomb Set the Bomb to the Bomb Cradle so that the Sample Chamber s placed toward the operator. By this moment, the vapor pressure inside the Bomb has already increased. 5.5 Starting a test Press the RUN/STANDBY switch. The RUN indicator lamp illuminates and the Bomb Cradle activates. 5.6 Stopping a test After the predetermined testing time (typically 10 minutes), Bomb Cradle stops, and the test result appears on the indicator. The test result stays on the display until either RUN/STANDBY or RESET switch is pressed. NOTE: A test cycle can be aborted if RUN/STANDBY switch is pressed during the test cycle. No test result is displayed in such case. 5.7 Completing a test After recording the test result, remove the Bomb from the Bath and pull down the ring of the quick coupler socket to disengage the Bomb. Rest the Connecting Pipe on the Bracket located at the end of the Bath with its quick coupler facing downward.

8 Draining and cleaning the Bomb Before draining the sample, release the vapor pressure using the attached Vapor Pressure Releasing Jig. Clean and precool/preheat the used Bomb parts for the next test. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: FOR THE SAFETY, MAKE SURE TO RELEASE THE VAPOR PRESSURE BEFORE DRAINING SAMPLE. IN DOING SO, WEAR EYE SAFETY GLASSES AND DIRECT THE RELEASE VALVE TOWARD VACANT AREA. NOTE : AVP-30D displays vapor pressure values in kpa as default. If so desired, by pressing the FUNCTION key the display can be switched to kgf/c m2. The FUNCTION key switched between kpa and kgf/ c m2 back and forth. 6. CAUTIONS DURING MEASUREMENT 6.1 Measuring Range The upper limit of the measuring range of the pressure sensor is 2 kgf/c m2. If it is used over the limit, it is in danger of being damaged. Be sure to use it within the limit. 6.2 Cleaning of Vapor Pressure Bomb ASTM D prescribes, Thoroughly purge the air chamber of residual sample by Filling it with warm water above 32 and allowing it to drain. However, the bomb used in the tester has an opening for the sample which is not fitted in an ordinary bomb. If the cleaning/washing is insufficient, a sample is left in a small gap in the quick coupler plug at the opening. This can have an influence on the test results. An effective way for completely removing the residual sample is to purge with the compressed air the air chamber by connecting the supplied air connecting tube, after washing with water. Then, the residual sample in the closing valve part of the plug will evaporate and be removed.

9 - 5 - NOTE : Volatile sample can be completely removed with the above procedure. For samples which cannot be removed by washing with water, solvent can be used subject to its character : it does not corrode the packing and O-ring at each part. Nitrile rubber is used for the packing at the correction of the air chamber and the gasoline chamber, and the O-ring at the plug of the air chamber top. Meantime, viton (fluorine rubber) is used for O-rings of quick coupler socket and each closing valve. Do not use acetone, specially, for both nitrile rubber and viton due to their non-resistance. 6.3 Leaks Check and Prevention of Vapor Pressure a) Structure of Quick Coupler (see Fig. 6) Besides the connection of the air chamber and the gasoline chamber, leaks can develop at the connection of the quick coupler. Be aware of leakage from the closing valve of the air chamber plug even before the pressure sensor is connected. b) Leaks Check ASTM D refers to leaks check. It basically applies to the tester. Check Leaks according to the procedure below. Leaks check by air pressure Using the supplied air connecting tube, introduce the air pressure (within 0.5 Kgf/c m2 ) given by the manometer into the vapor pressure bomb. After taking off the air connecting tube, attach the bomb to the carrier in the water bath and stop the stirrer. Then, check leaks from every part of the bomb. Next, withdraw the bomb from the bath and connect the pressure conducting tube. Attach the bomb to the carrier and check leaks from the connection of the quick coupler plug and the socket. c) Measures Against Leaks In Case leaks are observed, take the measures below. Leaks from the connection of the... Replace the packing. gasoline chamber and the air chamber Leaks at the top of the air chamber... Replace the O-ring. chamber

10 - 6 - Leaks from the quick coupler of the air chamber...leaks can develop when alien materials stop the tip. In case leaks do not Stop despite their removal, Replace the plug. Leaks from the connection of the quick coupler...replace the plug if its surface plug and the socket is scratched. Replace the O-ring inside the socket. Leaks from the pressure conducting tube... Replace it. 6.4 Purging with Air of Inside of Connecting Pipe and Pressure Sensor. If the sample (used in the previous test) is condensed and left inside the Connecting Pipe and the pressure sensor, correct test results cannot be obtained. To cope with this, purge these parts with air in accordance with the procedure below prior to starting the test. Purging should be made once or so a day. 1 Insert the quick coupler socket at the tip of the pressure conducting tube into the quick coupler plug of the transit unit. 2 Apply a pressure of kgf/c m2 to the air introducing opening. 3 Open the drain valve located under the pressure sensor adaptor by giving it double or triple counterclockwise turns (see Fig. 4). Compressed air will jet from there. Use it for three to five minutes for purging. 4 After purging is finished, restore the original quick coupler arrangements. Be sure to close the drain valve.

11 SELF DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION Technical failure during tests are reported by beeping buzzer and/or error message on the display. 7.1 Controller hung up Buzzer beeps intermittently. 7.2 Bad Temperature Sensor Buzzer beeps loudly and a message is displayed: <TROUBLE> TEMP SENSOR 7.3 Bath temperature exceeded 80 Buzzer beeps loudly and a message is displayed: <TROUBLE> BATH TEMP > Low water level Buzzer beeps loudly and a message is displayed: <TROUBLE> WATER LEVEL 7.5 Bad Pressure Sensor Buzzer beeps for 8 seconds and a message is displayed: <TROUBLE> PRESSURE SENSOR (*) where * designates the Pressure Sensor number.

12 Bad Back-up Battery Buzzer beeps for 8 seconds and a message is displayed: <TROUBLE> REPLACE BATTERY NOTE : For detailed trouble shooting procedure, consult Tanaka distributor. 8. ADJUSTMENT No adjustment is necessary. The pressure reading and temperature reading may be calibrated. Consult Tanaka distributor for detail. 9. PRINTER (optional) An optional printer can be connected via the standard RS-232C serial communication port. Information such as measured vapor pressure can be printed out. 10.
