21 Some Photos from the Grand Design Final Visit. Photos - Grand Designs Episode 3 Tenby Here are some photos from the third episode of the latest Grand Designs series. It airs Wednesday the 28th of September at 9pm on Channel 4... The old lifeboat station in Tenby was home to the brave souls of the RNLI for over 100 years. When they moved out, two more brave souls, Tim O'Donovan and his wife Philomena, saw an opportunity not only to convert it into a unique, contemporary home but to rescue this historic building for the nation. But nothing could have prepared Tim and Philomena for the battles they faced to pull the building into shape. Perched precariously on a steel pier 40 feet above the sea, with no access except across the soft sandy beach, the life boat station was and always will be at the mercy of the sea. Any deliveries have to be timed to beat the rapid incoming tides which often get the better of Tim's floundering machinery. Then there's the building itself to contend with - a weather worn, rusting and rotten hulk that was never designed to be lived in. As Tim wages war on the surly structure, it falls to Philomena to transform the interior from what was once little more than a tin shed into a beautiful modern home with far reaching views of the sea. 21

25 A brief History Of Tenby Lifeboat Station 1852 A lifeboat station was established by the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society The RNLI took over the station The first RNLI boathouse was built on the harbour beach. Six Silver Medals were awarded in the 1800s for rescues off the coast A new boathouse and roller slipway were built on the north side of Castle Hill The station s first motor lifeboat arrived A Silver Medal was awarded to Acting Coxswain John Rees and Bronze Medal to Motor Mechanic Alfred Cottam for rescuing eight men from the steamer Fermanagh A Centenary Vellum was awarded to the station A Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain Thomas Richards and Bronze Medals to Bowman William Thomas and Motor Mechanic William Rogers for rescuing seven crew from the St Govan s light vessel A collective Framed Letter of Thanks was sent to the Coxswain and crew for a service to the vessel Kilo A Silver Medal was awarded to Crew Member Michael Wilson and Bronze Medal to Bowman Joshua Richards for rescuing six children cut off by the tide. Michael Wilson also received the Maud Smith award for the bravest act of lifesaving that year A Framed Letter of Thanks was awarded to Second Coxswain Ivor Crockford and a Letter of Appreciation was sent to Assistant Mechanic R Thomas for a service to the vessel Manta A collective Framed Letter of Thanks was sent to the Coxswain and crew for recovering a child s body after a cliff fall An inshore lifeboat (ILB) station was established with a D class lifeboat A new ILB boathouse was built on the north side of the harbour. The Lifeboat station was going to cost the RNLI circa 15,000 annually to maintain empty or in excess of 250,000 to demolish Local Cardiff businessman Tim O Donovan was purchased the station and was awarded planning permission by the local council to convert to a residential dwelling. Giving the station a new lease-of-life and the RNLI a cash injection, and financial lifeline Permission granted by Crown Estates (the effective landlord) for the development, and works commence on the conversion. 25

26 2010 February works commenced on the conversion project, Winters Electrical employed to undertake the design, installation and certification of the electrical services Works complete, and Winters Electrical complete the test and commissioning of this exceptional installation. 26
