Get Started Your new spa was just delivered and set up. You re anxious to get it filled and heated so you can enjoy your first soak. But before you fill your spa, it is highly recommended that you take a few extra minutes to properly condition your spa water. Well balanced water using Hi-Temp spa products will: Kill bacteria and keep the water safe and clean. Ensure the water is clear and comfortable. Protect and extend the life of the equipment. Ensure that the spa manufacturer s warranty is not voided. Protect the spa surface from stains and scale. Know your fill water before filling the spa. Simply take a water sample to your pool or spa professional or you can check it yourself using test strips or a good quality test kit. If you suspect you have metals in your water, you will want to take a sample into a pool or spa professional for more advanced testing. Record your fill water information here. Source water may change over the course of a year but this will be a good starting point now and when you refill your spa. Alkalinity ppm ph Hardness ppm Iron ppm Copper ppm Filling Your Spa Add water to the spa manufacturer s recommended level. As the water is rising, add 1 ounce per 400 gallons of Hi-Temp Stain Out. This prevents metals such as copper, iron and manganese from staining the spa surface and prevents the formation of scale on heaters and other surfaces. After the spa is filled, circulate the water for at least 30 minutes. 3

Water Balance Step 1: Total Alkalinity - Ideal Range 80 and 120 ppm - Maximum 150 ppm Alkalinity Range and Its Effects ph Bounce Green Water Accelerated Corrosion Ideal Range ph Diffucult to Change Scale Cloudy Water Alkalinity in ppm Total Alkalinity is the measurement of alkaline materials in the water. Alkalinity acts as a buffer and prevents wild flucuations in the ph, commonly referred to as the ph Bounce. To Increase Alkalinity - With the jets and filter pump on, add Hi-Temp ph Increaser to raise the alkalinity. ph Increaser will also increase the ph. Increasing Total Alkalinity with Hi-Temp ph Increaser Increase Ounces Teaspoons 10 ppm ppm ppm All dosages are per 100 gallons To Decrease Alkalinity - Turn off equipment and add Hi- Temp ph Decreaser in small amounts to the deepest part of the spa. Do not let granules rest on surface of the spa and only add 8 teaspoons at a time. After 5 minutes, turn pump on and recirculate for an hour. Retest total alkalinity and repeat procedure if necessary. Decreasing Total Alkalinity with Hi-Temp ph Decreaser Decrease Ounces Teaspoons 10 ppm.25 3/4 25 ppm /8 50 ppm /4 All dosages are per 100 gallons spa water. There are many variables that will affect the actual amount of alkalinity removed. Test after each procedure. 4

Step 2: Adjust ph - Ideal Range 7.2 to 7.8 ph Range and Its Effects Excessive Sanitizer Use Accelerated Corrosion Ideal Range Sanitizer Less Effective Scale Cloudy Water 0 ph Scale ph is a scale used to express how acidic or basic the water is with 7.0 being neutral. Values below 7.0 are said to be acidic, values above 7.0 are said to be basic. The established range of 7.2 to 7.8 for spas accomplishes three very important functions. Your sanitizer is effective, corrosion is minimized and bather comfort is maximized. Increasing ph with Hi-Temp ph Increaser If ph is Ounces Teaspoons / /4 > All dosages are per 100 gallons spa water. There are many variables that will affect the final ph. Circulate and test after each addition. Decreasing ph with Hi-Temp ph Decreaser If ph is Ounces Teaspoons / /4 > /2 All dosages are per 100 gallons spa water. There are many variables that will affect the final ph. Circulate and test after each addition. To Increase the ph - Add Hi-Temp ph Increaser in the prescribed dosage with the water circulating and the jets on. To Decrease the ph - Add Hi-Temp ph Decreaser in the perscribed dosage with the water circulating and the jets on. When adjusting the ph, it is a good idea to dissolve your dry chemicals into a pail of clean water and pour it around the perimeter of the spa with the water circulating. Note About Volume Measurements: All teaspoon meaurements are based on level teaspoons. Dosages in teaspoons is given as a convenience. Converting ounces to a volume measurement such as teaspoons can be inconsistent due to granule size, moisture content, judgement of what constitutes a full spoon, etc. Please test often to verify your dosage. 5

Step 3: Adjust Calcium Hardness - Ideal Range 175 to 275 ppm. Maximum 400 ppm Proper Hardness Range and Its Effects Accelerated Corrosion Premature Equipment Failure Ideal Range Scale Formation Filter Calcification Eye Irritation Cloudy Waer 0 Hardness in ppm If too little calcium is present the water can be corrosive which leads to equipment damage. Excessive calcium levels can lead to scale formation which will shorten the life of heaters and leave deposits on the spa surface and inside pipes and equipment. Increasing Water Hardness with Hi-Temp Hardness Increaser Decrease Ounces Teaspoons 10 ppm /2 25 ppm /4 50 ppm /2 All dosages are per 100 gallons spa water. To Increase Calcium Hardness - Add Hi-Temp Hardness Increaser in the perscribed dosage with the circulation pump and jets on. Predissolving in a pail of clean water and distributing around the perimeter is preferred. Decreasing the Hardness level if the fill water is over 400 ppm is more difficult. If available, fill or partially fill the spa using a water softener to reduce the amount of calcium introduced and adjust the calcium level up to the lower range (175 ppm). Over the life of the fill, make up water will increase the calcium level. Also, a weekly maintenance dose of Hi-Temp Stain out will minimize scale formation. 6

Add Your Sanitizer The two sanitizers of choice are chlorine and bromine. Both will keep your spa free of algae and bacteria and comfortable for bathers. The choice is yours. Chlorine Sanitization - Ideal Range 2.0 to 3.0 ppm (residential) Use the chart below to determine the correct dosage. Hi-Temp Spa Gard is a fast dissolving, fast acting granular formulation that can be added directly to the spa. Add with the circulation pump running. Hi-Temp Spa Gard has a relatively neutral ph so there is minimal effect on the ph balance. After 10 minutes of mixing, retest the Hi-Temp Spa Gard Dosage water and confirm that the ph, total Increase Ounces Teaspoons alkalinity, hardness and the chlorine 1 ppm /8 levels are within the recommended ranges. Adjust as necessary. If no 2 ppm /4 adjustments are necessary, Get In! 5 ppm /8 After every use, be sure to shock your spa with Hi-Temp Oxidizer. This will oxidize the contaminants and make sure the water is clean and inviting the next time you use it. All dosages are per 100 gallons spa water. Bromine Sanitization with Tablets - Ideal Range 4.0 to 6.0 (residential) There are 2 methods of using bromine as the primary sanitizer. If using tablets, load the floating dispenser or inline feeder with Hi-Temp Brominating Tablets. These tablets erode slowly and will provide a steady feed of bromine over an extended period. Bromine tabs also contain chlorine which is used to activate the bromine in the the tablets. However, because they erode so slowly, it could take days before you reach the bromine residual. So you can use the spa immediately, add 1-5/8 teaspoons of Hi-Temp Reserve for each 100 gallons of spa water. Reserve loads your spa with an inactive form of bromine, creating a bank that can be called into action. Circulate the spa water for 10 minutes. Next, add 2 teaspoons (1/2 oz.) of Hi-Temp Oxidizer for every 100 gallons of spa water. Oxidizer activates the Reserve that was previously added. Circulate the water for 10 minutes on high speed. Retest the water and confirm that the ph, total alkalinity, hardness and the bromine levels are within the recommended ranges. Adjust as necessary. If no adjustments are necessary, Get In! After every use, be sure to shock your spa with Hi-Temp Oxidizer. This will oxidize the contaminants and make sure the water is clean and inviting the next time you use it. 7

Bromine Sanitization With Granular Bromine - Ideal Range 2.0 to 4.0 (residential) The second method of using bromine as your sanitizer is by using Hi-Temp Reserve with Hi-Temp Oxidizer. This method does not use any chlorine. Add 1-5/8 teaspoons (1/2 oz.) of Hi-Temp Reserve for every 100 gallons of spa water. Reserve loads your spa with an inactive form of bromine, creating a bank that can be called into action. Circulate the spa water for 10 minutes. Next, add 2 teaspoons of Hi-Temp Oxidizer for every 100 gallons of spa water. Hi-Temp Oxidizer activates the Reserve that was previously added. Circulate the water for 10 minutes on high speed. Retest the water and confirm that the ph, total alkalinity, hardness and the bromine levels are within the recommended ranges. Adjust as necessary. If no adjustment is necessary, Get In! After every use, be sure to shock your spa with Hi-Temp Oxidizer. This will oxidize the contaminants and make sure the water is clean and inviting the next time you use it. 8

Hi-Temp Easy Spa Care Program You purchased your spa for fun and relaxation, but like any complex system that includes hydraulics, electricity and mechanical elements, some maintenace is required. By using the Hi-Temp Easy Care Program, your maintenance will be kept to a minimum. By devoting a few minutes three times a week, you can ensure your spa will be clean and ready to use when you want and will prevent premature equipment failure and the expensive repairs associated with it. For best results, perfom these steps the same day every week. When adding products, have the jet and filter pumps running. Refer to the start up section for dosage information. Day 1 - Test spa water for ph, total alkalinity and sanitizer level. Adjust any of these items that fall outside of their acceptable ranges. Add 1oz per 400 gallons of Hi-Temp Spa Clarifier. The clarifier will help the filter pick up fine particles that otherwise pass through the filter cartridge. Day 3 - Test spa water for ph, total alkalinity and sanitizer level. Adjust any of these items that fall outside of their acceptable ranges. Add 2 teaspoons of Hi-Temp Oxidizer for each 100 gallons of water. Regular shocking with Oxidizer, removes nitrogen wastes and prevents eye and nose irritation in chlorinated spas. In brominated spas, shocking rejuvenates the bromine into a more effective sanitizer. Day 5 - Test spa water for ph, total alkalinity and sanitizer level. Adjust any of these items that fall outside of their acceptable ranges. Add 1 ounce per 400 gallons of Hi-Temp Spa Stain Out. Weekly maintenance dose ensures no scale build up and no surface stains. Add 2 ounces per 500 gallons of Hi-Temp Eco-Safe Spa Enzyme. Enzymes are your sanitizer and your filter s helper. They eat oils and other organic matter that cause scum lines, consume sanitizers and plug cartridge filters. Note: This program is designed for the average spa use. Frequent use and heavy bather loads mean more frequent tests and adjustments may be necessary. 9

Monthly Maintenance Using the weekly Hi-Temp Easy Care Program keeps your spa ready to use 24/7. However, there are a few other maintenance items that need to be performed every 4 to 6 weeks. Additional Tests Test spa water s calcium hardness level. Adjust if outside of the acceptable range. Clean Surface and Cover Keep the spa surface clean and bright. Use Hasa Tile Brite to remove oil, grime and scale deposits at the waterline and above. Clean Cartridge Filters Every 4-6 weeks clean the filter cartridges with Hi-Temp Filter Soak. Filter Soak will deep clean cartirdges by dissolving oils and other stubborn contaminants. Hasa recommends that a second set of cartridges be available to make the spa usable sooner. This will allow the dirty cartidges to be soaked for a longer period and allowed to dry before being put back into service. Drain and Fill Replacing the spa water is a normal part of spa maintenance. As the spa is used and the water is recirculated over and over again, the water absorbs materials that the filter cannot remove. The water becomes cloudy and irritating to the nose and eyes. With moderate use, expect to drain and refill the spa every 3-4 months. 10
