FENCING Ze Hou: Learning To Fence To C Division Champion In Under 3 Years 2017 National School Games Loo Zhao Rong Luan General Manager, Fencing Academy

Singapore Sports School reinforced its position as one of Singapore s top fencing schools by clinching three divisional titles at the recent National Schools Fencing Championships held on 20 to 24 March. Not only did they secure the Boys C Division and Girls B Division titles for the third and fourth year running, but they also clinched the Boys B Division crown for the first time since Among the 5 golds, 7 silvers and 8 bronzes was a Boys C Division Foil gold medal for Chern Ze Hou. While his victory over Hwa Chong Institution s Caleb Yong is a commendable achievement, his victory is even more noteworthy considering he only picked up the sport in December It feels great to win this since I only picked up fencing through the Learn-To-Fence Programme two and a half years ago. Furthermore, to win my first gold medal against such an experienced opponent is a much sweeter experience, Ze Hou said. Sports School s Learn-To-Fence Programme is a programme designed by Sports School coaches which seeks to introduce primary school pupils to the sport through short 3-4 session introductory courses and then selected students are admitted to the once weekly classes. One of the coaches involved is Wu Jie, Ze Hou s foil coach. Coach Wu Jie has played a key role in my development. He has put in a lot of effort to guide me during trainings and competitions, especially in my footwork. I must also thank my General Manager Ms Loo Zhao Rong Luan, my ex-coach Ralf Bissdorf and my teammates who have always pushed me. With this win, I am now more confident, and I want to aim for a medal at my next competition in Tangshan, China next month, Ze Hou said. In fact, Ze Hou s victory has not just pushed him to work harder, but also inspired some of his teammates, including Yu Sihan, who won the Girls B Division Epee title for the second consecutive year.

Ze Hou was from the Learn-To-Fence Programme, yet he never used his inexperience as an excuse, Sihan said, and this inspires me to work even harder to do well since I have been fencing from a very young age. 20 Their tally of 24 points in the second half saw them finish seven points clear of runner-up Milan SS Singapore. Our footballer s title win was built on a strong defence which saw them concede just six goals, the best in the division. They were no slouch in the offensive department either, as evidenced by the 24 goals scored to finish as the division s second highest scorers. Some of the teams they defeated in the tournament include JSSL NeXt Gen 14 and ESA Porto. Our Football Academy had qualified for the 2nd Division after they emerged 7th in the first half of the campaign which took place from September to December The format of the tournament sees teams in both divisions playing each other in 2016 before they are split into two divisions, with the second half of the season taking place in 2017.

Callista Chen Wan Qing ended the 2017 National Schools Golf Championships in the best way possible by winning a third consecutive A Division Girls Individual title. To top it off, the 18-year-old also secured her second straight A Division Girls Team trophy. The depth of Singapore Sports School s Golf Academy was evident at Orchid Country Club as Callista finished ahead of teammates Nicole Mok Shue Ying, Jacqueline De Los Reyes Young and Denise Wong Mei Yan to ensure Sports School swept all the podium places available in the A Division Girls Individual event. As much as I am happy with my victory, seeing my teammates perform so well is the icing on the cake, Callista, who is doing the extended International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, said. The post-secondary student-athlete was in good form from 3 to 5 April as she carded 149 to win the individual component by 2 strokes, before pairing up with Jacqueline to beat Raffles Institution by 23 strokes in the Team event. Despite her victories, Callista still took time to pay tribute to those who helped her achieve her goals. Happy as I am to have ended my National School Games journey on a high, this would not have been possible without the support of my parents, coaches, teammates and teachers. Credit must go to Sports School for providing me with the multiple training opportunities not just for myself but for the team so we could all do well together, she said. Sports School finished the championships with a medal tally of 3 golds, 3 silvers and 1 bronze, which included a gold from Andre Chong Wei Zer in the B Division Boys Individual event. 24 SHOOTING Martina Adds Another Accolade SSA Internal Selection Trials Koh Aik Beng Head, Cluster 4 Senior General Manager, Shooting Academy A World Cup title, and silver medals at the Junior World Cup and the Youth Olympic Games are just some of the accolades Martina Lindsay P Veloso has achieved in her fledgling career. The Sports School alumna can now add the title of national women s 10m air rifle record holder to her sporting achievements after she shot at the internal selection trials by Singapore Shooting Association at SAFRA Yishun. The 17-year-old s score was enough to beat current post-secondary student-athlete Ho Xiu Yi s record of which was set last year. The selection trials were the first phase of air rifle selection for the upcoming Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games. Next up in Martina s calendar are the South-east Asia Shooting Championships, the ISSF World Cup and the ISSF Junior World Championships.

SWIMMING Benedict Earns Sea Games Nomination Liberty Insurance Open Water South-East Asian Qualifiers Ng Kok Wei Senior General Manager, Swimming Academy ` Singapore Sports School alumnus Brandon Boon Ji Xing did Singapore proud when he won a bronze in open-water swimming at the Jakarta 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Fast forward to 2017, Brandon s younger brother, Benedict Boon Ji Chao, will have an opportunity to better that achievement after he met the "A" qualifying time for this year s Kuala Lumpur Sea Games. The younger Boon secured his nomination after he won the Liberty Insurance Open Water South-East Asian Qualifiers which were held at the Constant Wind Sea Sports and Sailing School on 25 March He finished the 10km race in 2:12:24.8s to meet the "A" qualifying time of 2:15:29.8s. Having missed out on making the team in 2011 and failing to medal in my Sea Games debut in 2015, I am even more determined to do well this time, the post-secondary student-athlete said. In fact, Benedict may have more than one opportunity to win a medal at Kuala Lumpur as he has also met the "B" qualifying times for the 400m and 1500m Freestyle events. And sibling rivalry will definitely be a factor pushing Benedict in the pool.

My brother was a very good open water swimmer, and now that he has retired, it is time for me to step up, the 21-year-old said. Benedict was not the only Sports School swimmer smiling after the meet, as Erasmus Ang Zhong Qing, Chantal Liew Li-Shan and Chin Khar Yi all met the SEA Games " A" marks at the same event.

SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING A Class Performance From Synchro Girls 2017 National School Games Not only did Singapore Sports School s synchronised swimmers sweep all the medals in the National Schools Synchronised Swimming Championships A Division Solo Free Routine event, they clinched all the gold medals on offer in the A Division. Their gold medals in the Solo, Duet and Team Free Routines helped Sports School capture the Overall A Division Championship title. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Year 2 student-athlete Debbie Soh Li Fei started the competition on the right foot on 1 April 2017 when she spinned and twisted her way to points in the final and eventually the most coveted spot on the podium. IBDP Year 1 student-athlete Miya Yong Hsing and Year 2 s Gwyneth Goh Xiao Hui followed in second and third. National athletes Debbie and Miya paired up to take the Duet gold on the same day.

TABLE TENNIS Double Happiness For Koen 2017 SAFRA-STTA Table Tennis Championships Dave Lai General Manager, Table Tennis Academy It was double happiness for Koen Pang Yew En after he clinched both the Under 15 and Under 18 crowns at the SAFRA-STTA Table Tennis Championships from 9 to 18 March He easily dispatched Sean Ang in the final to improve on his 2016 bronze medal finish and secure his first ever Boys U15 crown. However, his road to victory in the Boys U18 category was not as straightforward.

Koen needed seven games to overcome post-secondary student-athlete Ethan Poh Shao Feng in the final and secure his win at SAFRA Toa Payoh. Such was the competitiveness of the game, that victory was only decided in the seventh and final game. His achievement also means Koen has now won three of the age-group titles on offer, having also triumphed in the Under 12 category in In fact, with Koen still in Secondary 3, there is a possibility he can emulate Sports School alumna Ang Wan Qi to win three U18 crowns. Meanwhile, Sports School also performed well in the Girls category, with Wong Xin Ru leading Goi Rui Xuan and Eunice Lim Zoe in a Sports School in the Girls U18 division. Like Koen, Xin Ru also needed seven games to beat Rui Xuan in the final, adding the U18 crown to her U15 title from 2016 in the process. 32 Xue Jie Wins Medal In First Tournament As Professional 2017 Thailand Open Dave Lai General Manager, Table Tennis Academy He may have been making his professional debut, but Pang Xue Jie was not the least bit fazed as he teamed up with national team mate Gao Ning to win a men s doubles silver in the Thailand Open, their first outing as a doubles pairing. The unseeded duo reached the final in Bangkok where they succumbed 16-18, 6-11, 9-11 to Japanese fifth seeds Kenji Matsudaira and Jin Ueda on 2 April. Xue Jie also reached the last-16 in the men s singles where he lost in straight games to India s Amalraj Anthony. This is the World No.281 s first competitive outing since he started training full time in February this year. The Sports School alumnus will be hoping his partnership with Gao Ning will help him win gold at the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Southeast Asian Games to add to his men s doubles gold at the Jakarta 2011 Sea Games and team gold from the Naypyidaw 2013 Sea Games. Xue Jie was also part of the men's team which clinched victory at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games. 33 TRACK AND FIELD 'C' Division Boys Ensure History Does Not Repeat 2017 SPH Schools Relay Championships Pedro Edmundo Soto Acuna Head Coach, Track and Field Academy Singapore Sports School s C Division boys reminded their rivals of their potential at the upcoming National Schools Track and Field Championships after they secured the C Division Boys title at the 2017 SPH Schools Relay Championships. They won 1 gold, 2 silvers and a bronze medal to accumulate 28 points and edge Raffles Institution by 3 points. Their win at the Bishan Stadium was even sweeter considering Raffles had pipped them to the C Division Boys crown in Our other teams also put up strong performances on 25 and 26 March 2017, as our C Division Girls and B Division Boys both finished 2nd in their respective divisions. In fact, credit must be given to our B Division 4x800m Boys team who performed above expectation when they clocked 8:32.66s, missing Jurong Secondary School s 1987 record by a mere 0.4s. She first broke the record at the Bishan Stadium with a 5.52m jump on her fourth attempt to surpass Lynette Lim s 2015 record of 5.43m, before she extended it further with her 6th jump of 5.66m. On top of being the Long Jump record holder across all three girls divisions in the National School Games, Tia s win also means she has now won four straight golds in the event, with her first being her C Division title in While Tia s pedigree in the long jump is no secret, the post-secondary student-athlete is also a very proficient hurdler.
