1 World Volley F É D É R A T I O N I N T E R N A T I O N A L E DE VOLLEYBALL Official Bulletin No.40 June 009 Edition in English News Tale of two FIVB tournaments in Mexico Time for introspection The FIVB was pleased to announce last month that the 009 FIVB Women s Junior World Championship scheduled for Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico would go ahead as scheduled from July Some of the world s top Beach Volleyball players have cut their teeth at the event, gaining the experience and confidence needed to propel them to great achievements on the World Tour, Senior World Championships and the Olympics. Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President Having enjoyed tremendous success over the past few months renewing the organizational structure with our Continental Confederations, it is now time for the FIVB to look inward. It is my firm belief that progress on the outside is unsustainable without progress on the inside, and with that in mind, we at the FIVB headquarters in Lausanne are in the process of improving day-to-day communications and workflow among the many departments. Paramount to this improvement is the reinforcement of internal communications and enhanced coordination among FIVB directors and departments. I have called for a greater amount of information to be shared so that the directors will gain a more thorough knowledge of all matters pertaining to the FIVB. I am also encouraging directors and staff to attend more Volleyball and Beach Volleyball events to facilitate better communications with promoters, players, coaches and National Federations and to improve their organizational skills. The ultimate goal is to create a more open, streamlined and fluid working environment at the Château Les Tourelles. Another improvement in the works is the simplification of FIVB documents and publications. During my daily work, I have noticed too many instances where our written communications have been needlessly complicated and convoluted. We will work on producing documentation that is clearer and more concise in the future. Finally, I would like to say how pleased I am that the Women s Junior World Championship will take place in Mexico as scheduled from July It has been a very difficult few months for Mexico with the outbreak of the H1N1 virus, but we are confident the situation is now under control and no longer poses a threat to participants. Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President Brazil won the 007 FIVB Women s Junior World Championship in Thailand The FIVB s crisis management unit had been closely monitoring the situation regarding the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, in Mexico and ultimately decided the health and safety of the players and others involved in the tournament were not at risk. Four-time defending champion Brazil, the most successful team by far in the 14-year history of the tournament with nine gold and three silver medals, will once again be the team to beat. China, which finished second in 00 and 007 and third in 005, will look to snap the streak by winning their second gold at the competition. On the down side, it was with great regret that the FIVB confirmed that Mexico had declined to host the SWATCH FIVB Men s and Women s Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships. The tournament was scheduled to take place in Monterrey from September -6. The FIVB is looking for alternative sites to stage the ninth-annual competition for players under 1 years old, and has entered into talks with a number of interested federations. The first edition of the highly successful World Junior tournament took place in France in 001, and was last hosted by Brighton, England in 008. The FIVB is confident the competition will go ahead as planned and is looking forward to staging an exciting and successful tournament. 2 Volleyball MEN & WOMEN 010 FIVB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS Busy month of May sees much progress The list of hopefuls aiming to make the Final Round of the 010 FIVB World Championships dwindled rapidly in May, with preliminary tournaments being held from Maputo, Mozambique to Chinese Tapei and everywhere in between. Europe was a hotbed of activity, with 10 women s teams and 10 men s teams advancing to the third round. The 10 men s teams to continue their quest were Slovakia, Germany, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Finland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands and Estonia. Round will take place in Russia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Poland, with the top eight teams traveling to Italy next fall for the Men s World Championship. On the women s side, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania, Spain, France and Slovenia all progressed, joining six teams who received byes in Pools H, I, J, and K. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the Final Round in Japan next fall. Drawing of Lots for Girls Youth Worlds Organizers of the 11th FIVB Girls Youth World Championship in Thailand held a Drawing of Lots on May 18 to determine the composition of the July -1 tournament. The 16 under-18 national teams have been separated into four pools. Match schedule for the preliminaries: Maputo held two secondround tournaments in May, one for each gender. Early in the month, men s teams from Mauritius, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique booked their tickets to the next stage. 3 The women played their tournament from May 0-4, with Mauritius duplicating the performance of the men s team in going undefeated to top the standings. Mauritius and second-place South Africa move on. Another African tournament held in Echlef, Algeria, saw all three participating men s teams Algeria, Morocco and Nigeria go through after the Democratic Republic of Congo withdrew prior to the tournament. Elsewhere, Mexico and the Bahamas moved on in the NORCECA region by finishing first and second, respectively, in a six-team men s tournament held in Kingston, Jamaica from May 0-4. It was a big month in Asia as well, with six men s teams making it out of three preliminary tournaments. Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates were already assured berths in the second stage when they met in Muscat, Oman, following the withdrawals of Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia. Things were far more competitive in Chinese Taipei, where an unbeaten Kazakhstan had to scrap past the hosts on the final day of competition to earn the one and only ticket to the third round. In Tehran, Iran, the home side and India advanced to the third round from Asia Pool D. Volleyball Lucrative World League ready for lift-off It s all systems go for the 009 edition of Volleyball s premier annual event, the FIVB World League. Featuring the best men s players in the world, the US$0-million tournament involves 16 national teams playing 106 matches over seven consecutive weekends in 4 cities across the globe. The six Intercontinental Rounds begin the weekend of June 1-14 and end on the extended weekend of July The teams will be divided into four pools, with each team playing their pool opponents twice over a weekend both home and away. The Finals will include Serbia as organizing country, the winners of each pool and a wild card chosen by the FIVB. The Final Round will be contested by six teams playing a total of 10 matches through July -6 at Belgrade Arena The Netherlands return to the FIVB World League in 009 in Serbia s capital city. 4 Beach Volleyball MEN & women Path to World Tour gold leads through Brazil The Brazilian flag features the words Ordem e Progresso, or order and progress, which is exactly what the Brazilian pairs have brought to the SWATCH FIVB World Tour this season. Brazilian teams dominated the podiums at three tournaments held in May a double-gender event in Shanghai, a men s stop in Rome and a women s competition in Osaka. At each stop, Brazil placed two of the three medallists, helping the South Americans also rule the rankings: Three of the Top 4 men s teams and four of the Top 5 women s teams after the tournaments were Brazilian. In Shanghai, Harley Marques and Alison Cerutti took top honors by defeating compatriots Pedro Salgado and Pedro Cunha 1-14, 1-15 in the final on May. German s Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann placed third. Brazil also claimed two medals in the women s competition, with Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli defeating China s Jie Wang and Man Zuo 1-17, 1-1 in the final. Sisters Carolina and Maria Clara Salgado took the bronze. The only non-golden moment for Brazil at the three tournaments came in Rome, where Brink and Reckermann topped the podium for the first time with a 8-6, 0-, 15-1 win over Cunha and Salgado. The ever-present pair of Marques and Cerutti placed third. Any path to a gold medal usually features a confrontation against a Brazilian team, said Reckermann. We defeated two of their top teams the last two nights, so we are very pleased with our accomplishments. In Osaka, Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca cruised to their second SWATCH FIVB World Tour title this season by defeating compatriots Antunes and Antonelli 6-4, 19-1, in the final of the US$190,000 event. 5 MEN & women Stavanger ready to host the world The planet s best Beach Volleyball players are preparing to converge on Stavanger, Norway, for the 009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships presented by ConocoPhillips from June 5-July 5. Beach Volleyball The tournament organizers have promoted the competition with unique activities to highlight the 11 days of play. Stavanger has organized SWATCH FIVB World Tour events since 1999, with Beach Volleyball star Bjorn Maaseide the driving force behind the events. Known as the The Energy Capital of Europe for its oil and other natural resources, Stavanger promises to be an energizing and entertaining host of the World Championships. The gold medal match of the Foro Italico Open presented by Skipper in Rome Some 160,000 fans are expected to take in the competition, with over 50,000 tickets already sold a month before Opening Day. The center court stadium accommodates 8,000 people, with,000 seats built on a barge adjacent to the Vaagen Harbour event site. The barge is 1.5 meters long and 7.5 meters wide, with a dead weight of 11,85 tons. Construction of the grandstands began on June 1 and will take more than three weeks to complete, with 0 workers laboring 1 hours a day, six days a week. Organizers shipped in more than,500 tons of the grainy stuff for the tournament, and for any visitors wanting to get into the action themselves, there is plenty more sand to be found at five indoor Beach Volleyball facilities in the country. Sandland, the largest, is located on the outskirts of Stavanger and has five courts for professionals and amateurs alike. Norway is known as the home of Vikings, and as such, winners of SWATCH FIVB tournaments in Stavanger are presented with replica swords, which are arguably the most coveted prize on the World Tour. Looking to put their own swords to the competition will be reigning men s champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers of the United States, although compatriots Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh will not get the opportunity to defend their crown, as Walsh just had a baby with husband and fellow Beach Volleyballer Casey Jennings, and May-Treanor tore her Achilles tendon during rehearsals for the American television show Dancing with the Stars. 6 Technical FIVB launches interactive anti-doping tool online The FIVB has officially implemented a new educational program for antidoping and medical affairs under the slogan, We play it clean. The program fulfills WADA requirements aimed at educating athletes, coaches, officials and National Federations in avoiding banned substances. The program is available at The interactive site is rich in information aimed at dissuading viewers from using performance-enhancing substances, and is presented in a highly amusing and at times disturbing manner to capture and maintain interest throughout. Although the site is entirely anonymous, users are required to log in with a username and address to begin the program. They are then taken to a webpage featuring nine instructional video modules. The modules touch on a wide range of subjects, including rules, health consequences, how to become a good role model, and what happens when an athlete is caught using a banned substance. After completing each five to 10-minute module, the user is sent an recapping the most important points taught in the lesson. 7 QuickSets 60 years of Finnish Volleyball The Finnish Volleyball Association, under the leadership of President Rauno Saari, celebrated the 60th year of organized Volleyball in Finland with a gala in Tampere and a reception in Helsinki in May. Volleyball arrived in the country in the 190s but wasn t officially recognized until 1949, when the predecessor of the FVA, the Volleyball Commission, was founded. Charity match for Abruzzo The women s national teams of Italy and France held a charity match in Monaco on June for those affected by the April 6 earthquake in Abruzzo, Italy. Jointly organized by the Monaco Volleyball Federation and the Rotary Club of Monaco, the match was played at Stade Louis II under the slogan With hands on hearts. Proceeds were sent to aid the thousands of people still adversely impacted by the 6. magnitude temblor. The life of Ana Paula Brazilian Beach Volleyball player Ana Paula Connelly wowed an audience of more than 1,000 in Brasilia on the sidelines of the opening SWATCH FIVB World Tour stop in April with her poem That is Life! Connelly read the poem on stage with legendary Brazilian pianist Joao Carlos Martins and the Bachiana Chamber Orchestra after a chance meeting with the musician. It was very touching, Connelly said of the performance. A sentiment no doubt shared by everyone else in attendance that night. FIVB speaks at AIPS congress The FIVB gave a presentation on press facilities and services for the world media at the 7nd AIPS World Congress in Milan, Italy, in late April. A lecture from FIVB Press Officer Fabrizio Rossini (centre, with Olympians Bob Ctvrtlik, left, and Sergey Bubka) was warmly received by more than 00 journalists from over 100 countries, and touched on efforts made to accommodate the press worldwide, including the provision of front-row seats and free Internet access at events.
