6 VOLLEYBALL MAJOR RULES CHANGES 2-4-1b: A referee shall stop play when any player gains an illegal advantage by contacting any team member while playing the ball. Rationale: Clarifies that no team member may assist a player during an attempt to play the ball PENALTIES 2: After a team is charged with an unnecessary delay, the coach may request no further substitutions until the next completed rally. Rationale: Eliminates further delay of the set by removing the option to request additional substitutions after a team is charged with an unnecessary delay (NEW): Between sets, teams may warm up in their playing area, but may not hit volleyballs over the net into the opponents playing area. Rationale: Establishes parameters for warming up between sets that minimize the risk of injury. 6

7 FAQ S ABOUT SANCTIONED EVENTS Sanctioned Events are tournaments or competitions hosted by CYO partners to provide additional opportunities for competition and to raise funds for their programs. Refer to information on the CYO website: Sanctioned Events tab. 1. When can I register for a sanctioned event? Whenever the event is listed on the CYO website. 2. Is it okay to register my team for a tournament under my assistant coach s name, since I will be out of town for most of the games? No, to register for a tournament, the official CYO Sports Pilot roster needs to be provided, which lists the head coach s name. However, an assistant coach can certainly be in charge at the games. 3. May I write a personal check for a Sanctioned Event entry? No - entry fees must be paid with an official check from the partner s account. 4. The Sanctioned Event Director asked me to provide an official CYO roster. Can I use an excel spreadsheet that lists all the athletes from my team? No - only the official CYO Sports Pilot Team Eligibility Roster that your Athletic Director registered with CYO can be submitted. Your Athletic Director should provide each coach with a copy of their roster at the beginning of the season. 5. My parish has three 6 th grade teams. Can we combine players from each team to enter a Sanctioned Event? No - athletes may only play and be rostered on one CYO team. 6. Can my team enter a community sponsored event if we use our nickname rather than the parish name? No - teams are eligible to participate in CYO sanctioned events only. Bylaw 4-3-1F 7. In how many sanctioned tournaments can my team play? Generally it is [4] for grades 6-8 [3] for grades 3-5. Please refer to CYO sport specific rules for clarification. 8. How many Guest Players may I use during Sanctioned Event Tournaments? ZERO! The Guest Player Ruler cannot be used in sanctioned events. Bylaw 5-3-2C7 9. If an athlete or coach is ejected from a sanctioned event, do they sit out the next scheduled CYO game or the next sanctioned event game? The athlete(s) or coach must sit out the next scheduled game whether it is a sanctioned event game or a CYO game. 10. The event director informed me my team s game starts at 8:15 pm. I thought we couldn t play after 8 pm. What should I do? Contact the Event Director and your Athletic Director immediately. Inform mhuber@ccdocle.org immediately. Please refer to Bylaw and sports specific rules for clarification/exception. 11. Most of our sanctioned event games were postponed due to bad weather. Can a sanctioned event be extended after the CYO season closes? No, events need to be concluded by the published CYO end of the season date for that sport 12. Does CYO supply scoresheets for Sanctioned Events? No, unfortunately due to the high cost of printing, CYO is not able to provide Sanctioned Events with score sheets. It is recommended that sponsors buy a scorebook, along with other tournament supplies through Dick s, one of our partners. 7

14 CONDITIONING FOR YOUTH VOLLEYBALL WHERE DO WE START? Anecdotally, more and more college athletes are showing up freshman year already with a history of major injuries. These range from minor ankle tweaks to major knee, shoulder, and/or back issues. Many coaches are aware that the trends of youth volleyball in this country are to play as much as possible or to sport specialize at a very early age. Without getting too academic, it s safe to say that the blend of sport and education in this country (i.e. scholarships) coupled with the boom of the volleyball club scene has driven these young athletes to create over-use injuries, which at an early age in their young lives, can bode for major imbalances at the college level and beyond. We are all guilty college recruiters/coaches, club volleyball coaches/directors and parents. However, we are not powerless to change this injury curve! The previous sports performance article gave a brief over-view of training for the college volleyball athlete. If you remember correctly, the primary responsibility of sport performance training is to keep the athlete injury free while the secondary responsibility is to increase performance metrics. If you can keep the athlete injury free, he/she will be able to take more effective repetitions in practice, recover faster from practices/ competitions, and generally be able to gain serious performance markers in metrics specific to volleyball (i.e. ability to repeat a superior vertical jump relative to the opponent). Now, you may be asking yourselves, How is this possible when I m a club coach that sees my athletes for 2 practices per week at only 2 hours per practice? I m limited in time, facility space, AND I only coach 12 s! Rest assured there are plenty of things YOU can be doing NOW to minimize injury in your gym no matter the age level that you re coaching. Firstly, it starts with practice planning. Injuries tend to occur because of a combination of two things: bad skill form and fatigue. Are you training correct technique on approaches, so that your athlete keeps the ball in front of him/her and within his/her safe attacking window AND lands on two feet? Are you training correct passing position, so that your athletes are not putting undue pressure on their backs and knees? Are you training blocking systems to work together and not having your middle blockers go coast to coast on the net if they are not yet ready to do so? These little things can make a BIG difference in putting your players in an injury prone position...and even the strongest athletes get injured when put in injury prone positions. Plan your practice so that you teach correct technique, train it within an appropriate number of repetitions with breaks, and be patient for the athlete to re-produce the correct technique over time. Most importantly, HOLD YOUR ATHLETES ACCOUNTABLE TO PERFORM THE TECHNIQUE CORRECTLY. Second, you can increase your athlete s ability to perform correct repetitions if you can increase their ability to handle these reps. This starts with a dynamic warm-up/ knee injury prevention program that can be completed in the first 15minutes of your practice. You may request your team to arrive 30minutes prior to practice, so that this and additional warm-up can be completed prior to ball handling, etc. Dynamic warm-ups are used at every level and even in other sports with the purpose of increasing general range of motion, heart rate, stability & mobility chains, and movement rehearsal. Dynamic Warm-up/ Knee Injury Prevention Program Example Instructions: line-up your athletes along the entire court sideline in pairs (one athlete does the exercise while the partner does the stationary core exercise); make sure for each dynamic exercise your athletes use their arms fixed at 90*degrees and moving at the shoulder (i.e. natural movement) 14

16 TRAITS FOR SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS By Bruce Brown Successful coaches weave these 10 principles into all aspects of their team s activities whether it be during the off-season or pre-season, or in practice and in games. Consistent and clear standards and values. Pre-set team values are the foundation for every successful team. What is your team s identity? Great teams establish their own culture. The team members feel a collective responsibility to learn and follow the team values. People commit to the team values and live it in their actions. This is the way we do things around here is something the team members are proud to express. The feeling is that we don t want to do anything that would let down the coaches, the team and each other. Everyone is accountable. Master Teachers, Master Motivators. This first way for a coach gain credibility is to respect and trust is how much they know and how well they can teach it. Successful coaches understand the game and their players and how to teach both. Positive role models. Coaches must consistently display the team values in their actions, and it carries down to the seniors so that they serve as role models for the team values. In a successful program, the freshmen or sophomores can be told, If you are not sure how hard to work or how to act in any situation, just watch our seniors and follow their lead. Your older players and most talented players must be your best workers. All roles are valued. When there is relationship-based leadership, everyone who contributes to the team s overall value. Credit is shared. When all roles are valued, players are more willing to accept roles and the team is more successful. Positive rites of passage. Intentionally created positive traditions provide a path for athletes to feel welcomed, and to grow into leadership roles. Nothing that could be considered hazing is ever present. Consistent performance feedback. Coaches know how to balance praise and correction. Athletes take correction as a compliment they are coachable. Trust. With a successful team, players trust each other and their coaches. They trust their training. Mutual trust among players and coaches allows direct, open, honest communication and fearless play. Sense of Urgency. There is a high-energy level during both practice and games. Individual and team discipline is visible in the focused attention and focused effort of everyone. Details are important. Only disciplined teams have a chance to win championships. Impact the player s lives. Players in these programs treasure the experience so much that they carry the lessons and values over beyond the season and into their lives overall. They build successful teams of their own whether it be in sports or other endeavors. CYO inspires young people to know God, to love God, and to serve God through athletics. 16
