In our local community Collecting different Autumn materials to bring back to nursery for investigation in our sand trays. Using cameras to record photographic evidence. - See LJ s Home Links Grandad Alan Grandad Alan (Zak & Henry) accompanied groups on their Autumn walks to help children, parents and staff identify different types of trees, leaves, plants, and berries on our walks. Providing new vocabulary and discussing similarities and differences between shape/size/ colour of materials. Grandad Alan helped us to identify: Silver birch leaves, Alder cones, Portuguese Laurel, Elder fruit, Red Campion, Grose, Elm, Hawthron, Sweet Chestnut, Birch, Lime, Norway Maple, Sycamore, Chestnut, Giant Redwood, Larch, Scots Pine. Working with staff and children Grandad Alan helped us to sort and label the leaves/berries What can you see with your eyes? What can you hear with your ears? What can you touch with your hands/feet? I found pinecones in Beecraigs, on the ground beside a pipe. The bottom was quite jaggy and the top was soft. Hedgehogs sleep in a hole. Ants go under the leaves to sleep. If you open the jaggy bits (Aidan D showing us conkers he brought in) you will see conkers, they fell off the conker tree. Adults Voice. Lots of animals are getting ready to hibernate. That means to have a long sleep through the winter because the winter is too cold for them to come out in and it is too hard to find food. Adults voice. Leaves have veins like we do. The veins carry the water through the leaves to keep them alive.
