School Bus Transportation Safety Tips and Guidelines Board of School Trustees: Larry Beehler, Gary Fox, K. Jaye Galloway, Randy Leliaert, Chris Riley, Larry Romero, and Jamie Woods Dr. Jerry Thacker, Superintendent of Schools
Penn-Harris-Madison Transportation Department Services Bus transportation is provided to all students residing in our school district. Whenever possible, bus stops will be located at corners or intersections. This is safer due to the expectation that there could be a disruption in traffic flow, and allows the school bus driver to activate signals properly. Kindergarten transportation is provided along with the regular elementary routes. All students who request and receive approval to transfer to a school in an attendance area other than where they reside must arrange their own transportation. Bus service is not provided to transfer students. Students will not be assigned to more than two bus routes. Complex daycare schedules will not be maintained by the school, driver or Transportation Department. Parents are not permitted to board the school bus unless they are acting as chaperones for a field trip and have prior approval by the school. Your child will be assigned to a bus route and a designated bus stop. Any student wishing to ride a different bus route must submit a written note from the parent and the request must be approved by the school and Transportation. The approved note is then given to the bus driver. Students attempting to ride without a note will be sent to the school office. Indiana statute states: When school children are being transported on a school bus, they are under the supervision, direction and control of the school bus driver and are subject to disciplinary measures by the bus driver and the governing body of the School Corporation. Please make children aware they must follow the bus driver s directions and transportation procedures.
Bus Riding Tips and Safety Considerations Students should be waiting at their designated bus stop 10 minutes before the scheduled bus stop time. Buses are on schedules that do not allow for waiting, so if a student is not at the designated bus stop at the scheduled time, the bus driver will move on to the next stop. While waiting at the bus stop, students should stand back a reasonable distance from the street, refrain from horseplay and be respectful of others property. Destruction of private property will result in disciplinary action. For safety s sake, bus aisles must be kept clear of people and objects. Students should board the bus in an orderly manner, immediately take their selected or assigned seats, and stay seated until the bus arrives at its destination. Students should face the front of the bus, and keep their feet and arms out of the aisles. Students may transport musical instruments only if they can be held on the student s lap or stored under the seat without violating safety considerations. Animals, balloons, special displays or posters, class projects, or unusually large items are not acceptable for transportation. Windows can be opened only with the approval of the school bus driver. No objects of any kind may be thrown out the windows, nor should students arms or other body parts be placed outside the windows. Students must cross the street at least ten feet in front of the bus. Prior to crossing, the bus must be completely stopped, the stop arm extended, and students must look to the driver for approval to cross.
Bus Conduct Guidelines Follow directions given by the bus driver. Stay seated, facing front, in selected or assigned seat. Do not sit with feet in the aisle; the aisles must be kept clear at all times. Be respectful of others: Keep hands, feet, books, pencils, etc. to yourself. Be respectful of school property: Take your trash with you. Do not spit, litter or leave items on the bus. Speak in a normal tone of voice: If the bus driver can recognize your voice, you are talking too loudly. Windows can be opened only with the approval of the school bus driver. Throwing any object out the window or inside the school bus is not permitted. No eating, drinking or using any prohibited material on the school bus. Rude, discourteous or annoying behavior, and profane or obscene language or gestures will not be tolerated. Students must not bully, intimidate, harass, fight, push, trip or hit any other student. Vandalism, theft of property, or tampering with bus equipment is not permitted. Parents will be billed for damages caused by their child(ren). Other behavior(s) jeopardizing the safety and respect of others will not be tolerated. SM
Disciplinary Action If students choose to break the Bus Conduct Guidelines, any or all of the following steps may be taken: Assigned or reassigned seat by bus driver. Parent phone call by the bus driver and/or principal phone call or letter. Verbal reprimand by driver and/or school principal. Parent conference. Written bus referral for discipline. Bus suspension and/or school suspension. During suspension periods, the parent or guardian will be responsible for providing transportation to and from school. Severe Behavior Any step in the disciplinary process above can be used in extreme cases. Behavior such as violence, defiance of the bus driver s instructions, destruction of property, or interference with the safe operation of the school bus on the part of any student or parent chaperone will result in immediate removal from transportation services. The Penn-Harris-Madison Transportation Department utilizes video cameras on all school buses and will view the video recordings in disciplinary cases.
Penn-Harris-Madison Transportation Department The Penn-Harris- Madison Transportation Department is committed to supporting your child s education by providing the best possible service with a safe and reliable transportation system. The safe transportation of students to and from school is a shared responsibility between the Transportation Department, the bus driver, the parents, and the students. School bus safety also depends on student behavior. Indiana statute states: When school children are being transported on a school bus, they are under the supervision, direction and control of the school bus driver and are subject to disciplinary measures by the bus driver and the governing body of the School Corporation. This pamphlet is provided to inform parents and students about safety guidelines for students. We ask that both parents and students take a moment to review these safety tips and guidelines so that we can ensure a safe and enjoyable year for all bus riders.
