1 THE BOOK The main uses of taping are selective protection, support and offloading. In the case of certain existing injuries, the deliberate limitation of joint mobility can help to avoid further injury. The advantage of taping over complete rest is obvious: metabolic activity in the area concerned can be maintained at a high level, largely avoiding unwanted wastage of muscle tissue. Most sporting activity can even be continued, while following the advice of a physician. Taping also has an important role to play in sports injury prevention, as proven by its use for many years at elite level. Sports Taping shows the main applications of taping, and includes step-bystep guides to the taping procedure. Accompanying measures such as skin protection are also featured. THE AUTHOR Andreas Schur, MD, has been running a private surgical and sports medicine practice in Duisburg, Germany, since 1991, during which time he has dealt with numerous prominent athletes from different sports. He has already published many articles drawing on his long experience of the most common sports injuries in specialist magazines. ISBN $ US/ 12.95/$ CDN

6 Foreword Taping has been used in sports for years. This targeted method of movement limitation is often used as a preventive measure, particularly in ball games. The popularity of taping is not only due to its immediate effect, it can also help avoid breaks from training and competition because of injury, so that the athlete need not worry about losing fitness. Taping has actually become so important in sport that physical therapists and sports doctors are always trying to find new taping techniques. Taping has become one of the most innovative branches of sports medicine. This book focuses on the most important techniques for the arms, legs and torso. The indications are accompanied by illustrated, step-by-step explanations for the correct way to apply the tape. There is also a summary of the most important materials that the physical therapist and team doctor should always have at hand. Andreas Schur, MD TAPING 5
