3 Match background Finland have won all four of their previous meetings with the Faroe Islands, and a victory over Greece in their first game under Markku Kanerva has boosted their Group F hopes. Jóan Edmundsson is suspended following his red card against Northern Ireland on Friday. The following players are a yellow card away from a ban: Paulus Arajuuri, Perparim Hetemaj, Tim Sparv (Finland), Fródi Benjaminsen, Hallur Hansson and Brandur Olsen (Faroe Islands). Previous meetings Finland trailed at half-time but battled back to secure a 3-1 win in Torshavn in their first Group F meeting with the Faroe Islands. Finland's record in four games against the Faroes is now W4 D0 L0: W1 D0 L0 in Finland W2 D0 L0 in the Faroe Islands, with the other game played on neutral territory a friendly in La Manga, Spain. Christian Holst's strike in the sides' first Group F encounter was the Faroes' first goal in four meetings with Finland. Form guide Finland are without a win in their last four competitive home games (D1 L3). The Faroes' 1-0 victory in Greece earlier in the campaign was their first competitive away win in 35 outings (33 defeats, one draw) since a 2-0 success in Luxembourg on 24 March The Faroes have been unusually durable on the road in this qualifying campaign, scoring once and conceding only three in three games so far. They are on target to improve on their best ever away qualifying campaign, which was for UEFA EURO 2000, when they conceded only ten in five away games an average of two per game. Trivia and links Christian Holst is poised to win his 50th cap in the Finland game. Finland's Sparv and the Faroes' Sonni Nattestad used to be team-mates in Denmark at FC Mitdjylland. Finland's Jukka Raitala and the Faroes' Gilli Sørensen also play together in the Superliga with Aalborg BK. The 16 UEFA competition meetings between the nations' clubs have left the Finnish sides with the record W10 D4 L2. Most recently, Myllykosken Pallo-47 eliminated ÍF Fuglafjørdur 1-0 on aggregate in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League first qualifying round. The nations' four UEFA age-group competition meetings have also all been won by Finland, but there is encouragement for the Faroes; the margins of defeat have got smaller since a 7-0 loss at Under-16 level in They scored their first goal against Finland at any men's or women's international level in their most recent encounter, a 3-1 loss at Under-16 level in 1999: Arnhold Berg was the man on target. 3

6 Head coach Markku Kanerva Date of birth: 24 May 1964 Nationality: Finnish Playing career: HJK Helsinki (twice), IF Elfsborg, FinnPa Coaching career: HJK Helsinki (assistant), FC Viikingit, Finland Under-21, Finland (caretaker) One of Finland's top players of the late 1980s and early 90s, Kanerva won five league titles and three domestic cups in a playing career that included short spells with Elfsborg in Sweden and FinnPa but was otherwise spent at HJK. After earning 59 caps, Kanerva hung up his boots in autumn 1998 and quickly resurfaced as a coach. Following several seasons in club football he took charge of Finland's Under-21s in 2004, leading them to a first UEFA European Championship finals in 2009, when he was named the country's coach of the year in all sports. Then appointed assistant coach to the Finland senior national team, he took the reins on a temporary basis following the sacking of Stuart Baxter in late 2010 before Mixu Paatelainen stepped into the void. History repeated itself in summer 2016 when Kanerva was installed as interim head coach for the rest of the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign; Hans Backe will assume the helm at the start of Lars Olsen Date of birth: 2 February 1961 Nationality: Danish Playing career: Glostrup IF, Køge BK, Brøndby IF (twice), Trabzonspor AŞ, RFC Seraing, FC Basel 1893 Coaching career: Randers FC, Odense BK, Faroe Islands Enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a central defender, winning five Danish titles in a six-year spell at Brøndby between 1985 and Allegedly drove from Turkey to Scandinavia when he learned of his country's belated call-up to EURO '92. His passion and leadership he played every minute in Sweden helped inspire Denmark to the most unlikely of triumphs. He ended his career with 84 caps, a record 69 as captain. Learned his coaching craft with Brøndby, taking charge at various youth and reserve levels after finishing his playing days at the club in 1996, before accepting his first senior job with newly formed Randers in Guided the team into the Danish Super League in 2004 but could not help maintain their elite status, suffering immediate relegation. Steered second-division Randers to a surprise 2006 Danish Cup success, beating Esbjerg fb in the final, while also securing a return to the top flight. Moved to Odense in summer 2007, leading his new side to a fourth-place finish in his first term. 8 Competition facts UEFA European Championship qualifying records There have been 14 qualifying tournaments for the UEFA European Championship with 11 countries participating in all of them: Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Ireland, Romania, Spain and Turkey. The Soviet Union and Russia combined have also been involved in all 14 qualifying tournaments, as have Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. Of those ever-present nations, Spain have the most successful record, reaching the final tournament on nine occasions, including the 1964 event which they hosted. The most prolific qualifying country are West Germany/Germany, with ten successful attempts out of 11. Their only failure was in their first participation, for the 1968 tournament. They are on a run of ten successful qualifications, broken only by EURO '88, for which they qualified automatically as hosts. Discounting host nation exemptions, France and Germany hold the record for consecutive qualifications, from 1992 to Like West Germany/Germany, the Soviet Union/Russia have enjoyed a record ten successful qualifications but from a maximum 14 entries. The best percentage record for a single country is shared by Germany and the Czech Republic, who both have a 100% success rate, with six and five qualifications respectively. Of the 53 nations pursuing a UEFA EURO 2016 spot via the qualifiers, 26 have never featured at a final tournament. Additionally, neither Austria nor Ukraine have ever experienced a fruitful qualifying campaign, their only appearances at the finals being in 2008 and 2012 respectively, when they were co-hosts. Gibraltar are the sole association in the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying field to be making their competition debut. Montenegro will make their second appearance and Kazakhstan their third. On just one of their ten successful qualification bids have West Germany/Germany failed to qualify as group winners. That was in 2008, when the Czech Republic edged them into second place, a position that also carried automatic qualification. The longest ongoing streak of qualifying group victories is held by Italy, who have topped their section in each of the last four competitions. Greece have the next best record in that regard, finishing first in the last three qualifying events. Spain are the only other nation to have won their group in the qualifying campaigns for both 2008 and Hungary and the Republic of Ireland share the record for the highest number of qualification matches played by a single nation, with 116 apiece, although the Soviet Union/Russia have contested 117. Twenty other countries or combinations have amassed a century or more of qualifying games with nine Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Belgium, Wales, Finland and Cyprus joining that select band in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying. Spain have registered the most UEFA European Championship qualifying wins, 79, followed by Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic on 74, with the Netherlands and the Soviet Union/Russia both on 70. Spain are also the competition's top goalscorers, finding the net 277 times. The Netherlands are second in the list with 246. The side with the highest number of defeats are Luxembourg with 89, followed by Malta (83) and Cyprus (72). Aside from debutants Gibraltar, two teams have never won a UEFA European Championship qualifier. Andorra have lost every one of their 47 matches; San Marino had lost 59 in a row before the goalless draw against Estonia in November The most goals conceded by one team is 293, by Luxembourg, closely followed by Malta on 283. San Marino are next up on 278 from just 63 games, in which they have scored a mere six goals, the fewest by any competing nation bar Gibraltar. The Republic of Ireland have drawn 35 qualifiers, more than any other side but closely followed by Romania on 33. 8

9 Only five teams have qualified with a perfect record in their group France (eight victories out of eight, EURO '92 and UEFA EURO 2004), Czech Republic (ten out of ten, UEFA EURO 2000), Germany (ten, UEFA EURO 2012), and Spain (eight, UEFA EURO 2012). Italy have the longest ongoing unbeaten UEFA European Championship qualifying run, having avoided defeat in each of their last 26 qualifying matches. Greece's 18-game unbeaten run was ended by Romania on matchday one, Spain's own 18-match streak and Germany's 13-game sequence both ended on matchday two. England (13) are also on a long sequence without defeat. Those five countries all came through the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying campaign unbowed, but no side avoided defeat en route to UEFA EURO Armenia and Liechtenstein have never qualified for a UEFA European Championship final tournament but boast the players with the most appearances in the qualifying competition, Sargis Hovsepyan and Mario Frick respectively with 47. Ireland's Keane became the highest scorer in UEFA European Championship qualifying matches on matchday two as his hat-trick against Gibraltar took him to 21 goals. He leapfrogged Turkey's Hakan Şükür on 20 goals, with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo on the same mark; the Czech Republic's Jan Koller and Denmark's Jon Dahl Tomasson are both on 19. Two players are on 18 goals: Miroslav Klose (Germany) and Raúl González (Spain). The highest number of goals netted in a single qualifying tournament is 13, by Northern Ireland's David Healy ahead of the 2008 finals. Next on the chart are Davor Šuker (1996) and Huntelaar (2012) with 12 apiece. 9

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 is the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals. Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations.
