In reality, we expect as many as forty-five Districts in the first round of our state tournament.)

Rules for State Level Battles Over the years we have come to understand that all Battle questions are not created equal! Some are harder than others for teams to answer. The rules will assure that every team has the same mix of easy and hard questions because all teams will have the very same questions at each round of state Battles. Here s how it will work: Round 1: All teams will compete at one time and be asked the same set of questions 16 questions for each of two Battles. At the end of both Round 1 battles, the scores of ALL statewide competing teams will be turned in by moderators and compared by the Battle of the Books Chairperson. Top-scoring teams will advance to Round 2 competition. Although the number of teams to advance will vary due to possible ties, ideally 12 top-scoring teams will advance. At the end of Round 1, teams will not automatically know if they will advance to Round 2. Once the chairperson has determined the highest scorers, she will post the results on the Battle of the Books web page. NOTE: To keep the potential scores entirely even, there will be no tie-breaker questions asked in Rounds 1 and 2. Round 2: The top scoring teams from Round 1 will compete following the same directions as in Round 1, each team being asked the same set of questions in two Battles of 16 questions each a total of 32 questions for Round 2, with no tie-breakers allowed. Again the web page can be used to determine which teams will advance to Round 3 and to obtain call-in information. Ideally, four teams will advance to Round 3 competition. Round 3: The participating teams will all answer the same Rd. 3 questions. In Round 3, only one Battle of 16 questions will take place. If necessary, tie-breaker questions will be used in this round to determine the 1 st place winners. NOTE: In all rounds, challenges will be allowed no matter how many teams missed the question. Advantages of this format: All teams receive the same mix of easy and hard questions. All teams will be able to participate in at least 2 Battles so there is more opportunity to practice all they have learned about the books. Two strong teams will not eliminate each other just by competing in the same bracket.

Battle of the Books Rules K-2 --High School 1. Teams consist of up to three members plus one alternate - a total of four with only three competing in any one Battle. Of the three competing members, one will serve as the spokesperson throughout the Battle and one will serve as the recorder. 2. Two or more teams will compete during a single Battle. Efforts will be made to assure teams can quietly discuss answers among themselves without fear of being overheard by the other competing team(s). A proctor will be assigned to monitor each team and verify the keyword answer written by the recorder. 3. Each team will be allowed to have one official answer sheet and two pencils with them at the table during a Battle. No other items should be on the table. All writing is done by the team's recorder, and only in the form of answers to the Battle questions asked by the moderator. 4. Sixteen questions will be asked in a single Battle, and each team competing in that Battle will answer the same 16 questions. At the end of 8 questions, a halftime score for each team will be announced, and at the end of 16 questions, the team with the highest score will be declared the winner. Round 1 and 2 each have 2 battles, for a total of 32 questions. Round 3 is just 1 battle of 16 questions. 5. The questioner will ask a single question of all teams at once. A repeat of the question should be read automatically to cut down on the need for requested repeat. Timing, however, starts immediately after the question has been read for the first time. Teams will use the allotted time to quietly discuss the question among themselves. The spokesperson will tell the recorder which answer to write on the official answer sheet. Each team will have 30 seconds (15 seconds on a tie-breaker question) in which to discuss and record their answer to the question. 6. The team s response will be written on the official answer sheet in keyword form, which means a unique word from the title of the book and the last name of the author would be written on the answer sheet. For instance, for the book Who killed my daughter? by Lois Duncan, an acceptable answer would be -Killed/Duncan - as long as there were not two books with the word "killed" in the title. Written answers need to be legible, and keywords need to be complete and spelled well enough to be easily recognized by the proctor. 7. Discussion and writing must stop as soon as time is called. 8. No answers will be given until the time period expires. When time is called, the questioner will call on the spokesperson of each team to say the team s answer out loud. The teams will alternate giving the first oral response. In other words, Team A will answer first on question one and Team B will answer first on question 2, etc. 9. After all teams have stated their answers, the judge will then state the correct answer and award points to the teams, allowing 5 points for the correct title and an additional 3 points for the correct author. To be judged correct, the title and author must be stated in order and in full, just as they are on the official list, and this stated answer must match the title and author keywords as written on the official answer sheet. If the answer given orally differs from the keyword answer on the

official answer sheet, no points are awarded for that answer. If a spokesperson begins to give an incorrect answer and then corrects him/herself, the site proctor will be called on to verify that the correct keyword and author were written on the answer sheet. If the error was only a slip of the tongue then that team will be awarded full points for the question. 10. During Battle, the team s spokesperson may request an additional repeat of a question. All repeats plus the recording of the answer must take place within the time limit, which starts after the question is read for the first time. 11. If a team gives an incorrect answer, the questioner will ask that team if they would like to challenge. If the team decides to do so, they will follow the challenge rules listed below. No matter how many teams give an incorrect answer, a challenge may be declared by any (or all) teams. 12. In the event of a CHALLENGE, this procedure will be followed: In State Battles, each team is allowed 3 free challenges per round (32 questions). If the challenge is successful, the team will still have 3 challenges. If unsuccessful, the challenging team will lose that challenge and reduce to 2 their remaining challenges and so on. Each challenging team will have TWO minutes to find and write the page numbers where the answer can be found in the book they named. When time is called, discussion and writing must stop. If the team has found an answer, the challenge judge will be called to dial into the bracket. The spokesperson will then be asked to use the text on only the page numbers they have recorded on their answer sheet to prove that the question could be answered correctly in the named book. The timekeeper will begin timing after the questioner recognizes the challenge and 1-3 unmarked copies of the book are given to each challenging team. The official timer will announce only the end of the TWO minute time period. The challenging team should be able to provide exact reference to a page in the book so the judge can refer to the correct passage. The Challenge judge determines whether the challenge is successful or not. An answer may be considered correct by way of inference. If the judge accepts the challenge as successful, and the other conditions for gaining a score were fulfilled, the points shall be awarded and the Battle shall continue. The judge s decision is final. 13. At the local, district and Round 3 level of state competition, a sudden death tie-breaker round may be played to break a tie between 2 or more teams. The tiebreaker rules are the same as above except the time allowed to answer the question will be 15 seconds rather than 30. As soon as one team has more points after a question is completed, that team is declared the winner. (If the score is still tied after 10 tiebreaker questions, the official may allow both teams to advance in the competition.) Challenges ARE allowed during tie-breaker rounds with the usual challenge time in effect. 14. During the battles, if a team disagrees with the scoring or has other questions about a judgment that affects the outcome of the battle, these concerns must immediately be brought to the attention

of the moderator by the team coach. If necessary, the moderator will contact the state coordinator to help address the question or concern before the next round of Battles takes place. ADDITIONAL RULES (PERTAINING ONLY TO AUDIO-CONFERENCE BATTLES) 1. In the event a school has a problem connecting with (or is cut -off from) the audio-conference bridge number, they should immediately redial the teleconference to reconnect. If this does not resolve the problem, the state chair(s) should be notified immediately. 2. In the event of garbled, distorted, incomprehensible, or interrupted reception during audioconference Battles, the coach (after identifying him/herself as the coach) may request a repeat of the question. The question may then be repeated and the full time period will begin after the question is restated. 3. If the equipment fails, time will be restarted, the question will be re-asked when the team rejoins the audio-conference. During audio-conference Battles, there should be a timekeeper or a scorekeeper at each site.

Prior to the Battle: Proctor/Coach Checklist for State-Level Battles 1. Have 1-3 unmarked copies of each title in the room, but out of sight, to use in the event of challenges. 2. Have extra score sheets and a stopwatch on hand to use when it is your turn to act as the official scorekeeper or timekeeper. 3. Provide your team with two pencils and an Official Answer Sheet when it is time for their Battle. 4. Set up your audio-conference equipment and call in to the bridge number five minutes before the Battle is scheduled to begin. 5. Make sure your team is ready to make introductions before the Battles begin. Name, grade, and position of each team member (i.e. recorder, spokesperson) should be stated. During the Battle: 6. Make sure your team records their answer on the official answer sheet within the time limit. It is your responsibility to make certain the recorder stops writing exactly when time is called. 7. After your team has given its oral answer, verify that it matches the keyword answer written on the answer sheet and then check it off. (If it does not match, report this discrepancy to the questioner/moderator immediately.)

Appendix G Frequently Asked Questions Can we change our district team after the district battle? Can we add or change members? Your team, (up to 3 members plus an alternate) may not change after the names have been sent in to the State Coordinator. Does a student have to be enrolled at the grade level he/she participates at? No, students can participate in /move up to a higher level, but not a lower level. However, this is not encouraged because of the use of previous titles. Can teams list the titles/authors on their answer sheets during free time during the battles? The answer sheet should contain only the answers and requested information. Individual answers need to come from the team members heads, not a list, whether or not the list is developed in their spare time during battles. Do we call in to the state battles, or will someone call us? It is your responsibility to dial in to the audio-conference number designated for your battle. You will be given bracketing with the toll-free number and the pass code assigned to your bracket. Dial in at least 5 minutes before the battle is scheduled to begin. If you have problems, call back and speak to the teleconference operator who will have a copy of the schedule and will be able to help you connect to the correct audio-conference. If you cannot get the problem resolved, call the state coordinator. We will hold the battle for up to 15 minutes, after 15 minutes if a team has not connected or contacted the state coordinator they will be disqualified. When is it OK for alternates to participate in the state level competition? An alternate may only replace a team member BETWEEN Battles, never during. Players may not be substituted once a Battle has begun EXCEPT in the event of an illness or emergency. If all teams give an incorrect answer, can they challenge? Even if all teams give an incorrect answer a challenge may be declared by any (or all) teams. As of the State Battles, each team is allowed 3 free challenges per round (32 questions). If the challenge is successful, the team will still have 3 challenges. If unsuccessful, the challenging team will lose that challenge and reduce to 2 their remaining challenges and so on.
