3 MYSA & NVYSL classify U10 soccer as non-outcome based game scores are tracked by NVYSL but are not published there are no standings, playoffs or post-season tournaments U10 soccer is not about wins and losses U10 soccer is developmental with competitive undertones developmental soccer captures emerging talent and improves individual & team skill we manage a delicate balance between recreation vs. competition on the continuum in youth sports Objectives of every U10 coach Coaching U10 : Philosophy, Objectives & Special Challenges protect the safety of our players develop fundamental individual skills : conditioning, ball control, sportsmanship, etc. develop complex team skills : positioning, communication, teamwork, etc. sustain a fun environment that fosters enjoyment of the game 3

6 Assigning U10 Teams : Policies & Procedures Assignment of U10 Teams to Divisions relies on the partnership between Clubs & NVYSL Build Teams Clubs Assign Teams NVYSL Schedule Games Clubs are responsible for Building Teams evaluate player strength : tryouts, coach input, drafts, etc. assign players to teams : stratification model vs. level-loading model suggest absolute & relative position of Club teams in the NVYSL division structure NVYSL is responsible for Assigning Teams to Divisions evaluate team strength : coach experience, player experience, previous seeding, previous season record, club feedback, etc. balance the division structure, including sub-division into specific flights schedule games within each division monitor competitive balance and sportsmanship throughout the season and alter game schedule when necessary 6

9 Preparing for Game Day : Check Your Schedule U10 teams play an 8-game season : 4 home + 4 away Game Schedules are located on the NVYSL website : consult the schedule web page frequently to check for any changes or updates! clicks to get your schedule!

Do you know your OPPONENT? 11 introduce yourself to your opponent s coach(es) during the week before your upcoming game find each other as soon as the visiting team arrives on game day morning, and communicate about any special challenges 2. Do you have a FIELD? the *home coach* must verify that the fields are available, lined and setup for gameday communicate with your opponent s coach for any exceptions 3. Do you have COACH PASSCARDS? EVERY coach & assistant coach on your team must provide an NVYSL approved passcard as photo ID *new* process intended to improve efficiency of verifying that only approved coaches are managing the sidelines 4. Do you have ROSTERS? Preparing for Game Day : Check In be sure to have TWO copies of your NVYSL Approved Roster exchange these with the referee, and you will receive one copy of your opponent s roster 5. Do you have a REFEREE PAYMENT CARD? the *home coach* is responsible for providing a signed payment card to the referee

13 6. Do you have GAME BALLS? the *home coach* is responsible for providing TWO SIZE #4 game balls to the referee referee will inspect and select one ball for use 7. Have you arranged your SPECTATORS? notify all parents and other spectators that they must view the game on the side of the field OPPOSITE the bench areas spectators cannot view the game from the corners or from behind the goals 8. Have you checked your players EQUIPMENT? players must remove ALL jewelry (even recently pierced stud earrings) players cannot play with a hard cast, regardless of whether or not it is wrapped confirm that your players are wearing approved soccer cleats check that shinguards are not exposed, socks are pulled up, shirts are tucked in Referees will inspect for these items, so do yourself a favor and catch any problems before your ref does! 9. Do you need PINNIES? check the schedule for your opponent s uniform color the *visiting team* is responsible for wearing pinnies to avoid a color conflict 10. Do you have a FIRST AID KIT? Have you digested the NVYSL ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY? always remember that U10 sits at the boundary of developmental & competitive soccer understand that U10 referees may be young or inexperienced the experience we create for U10 referees can directly impact long-term turnover rates referee abuse attacks the integrity of our game, and will never be tolerated...coaches are the 1 st line of defense! protect the ability for U10 referees to develop their skills in a non-competitive (but intense!) setting, including our new Mentoring Program NVYSL Referee Director : Adam Tocci 14

15 Preparing for Game Day : Protect Good Sportsmanship 12. SPECTATOR BEHAVIOR is the Coach s responsibility instruct spectators to applaud both teams for playing the game well remind spectators to refrain from sideline coaching directed at their player or any other discourage spectators from making disparaging comments about any player, coach or referee 13. Actions speak louder than words : setting a GOOD EXAMPLE Players & Spectators will take their cues from you! insist that your players abide by the rules of the game and play the game with dignity and respect encourage your team to congratulate opposing players & the referee at the end of the game 14. Manage the game to achieve BALANCED SCORING guard against lopsided scores (goal differential >6), which demoralize the losing team imbalanced scoring may indicate problems with team assignment... NVYSL will attempt to resolve imbalanced scoring may also indicate poor sportsmanship... NVYSL will aggressively investigate please review the Stop Scoring presentation under Coaches&Officials link on the NVYSL website 15. Manage your bench to achieve BALANCED PLAYING TIME NVYSL expects that U10 players will be afforded an opportunity to play at least 50% of every game NVYSL Sportsmanship Officer : Ben Myers 15

16 Reporting Final Scores Remember that U10 soccer in MYSA & NVYSL is non-outcome based U10 soccer is not about wins and losses game scores are tracked by NVYSL but not published U10 scores are carefully scrutinized to evaluate appropriateness of team assignments Verify the final score before leaving the field immediately upon completion of the game, obtain the final score from the referee confirm this final score with the opposing coach both teams will independently report the final score, so eliminate discrepancies before you leave the field Understand your Club s policies & procedures for score reporting identify your designated Club Score Reporter report your score to your Club Score Reporter immediately after completion of your game Club Score Reporter enters scores into the NVYSL database failure to enter scores by midnight on the following Monday results in a $25 fine per week 16

17 Cancelling & Rescheduling U10 Games Consider Game Cancellations as rare and extreme events please review NVYSL Bylaws for complete description of policies & procedures our best defense against chaos is ADVANCED NOTICE requests for rescheduled games must have the consent of both coaches and must be escalated to the U10 Age Director at least 10 days prior to the originally scheduled date only exceptions to this 10 day advance include extreme weather, unplayable field conditions, or unexpected absence of a referee * once the schedule is set, please do everything you can to PLAY THE GAMES * HOME team bears most responsibility for rescheduling a cancelled game (1) Home Team must contact the Visiting Coach to secure a date (2) Home Team must work with their Club s Field Coordinator to reserve a location (3) Home Team contacts NVYSL U10 Age Director (4) NVYSL U10 Age Director updates scheduling information on Scores, Schedules & Standings website (5) Home Team contacts their Club s Referee Coordinator to schedule a Referee 17

18 Approving Roster Changes Consider roster alterations as rare and extreme events NVYSL Approved Rosters are documents of record critical to the legitimacy of every game we play the only acceptable roster is a NVYSL Approved Roster players not listed on a NVYSL Approved Roster cannot play NO HANDWRITING or manual alterations are permitted to the original roster, except for jersey numbers approving changes to these rosters is a process that takes TIME & ENERGY, so changes must be well justified and initiated in advance Alterations to Rosters require Club & League approval ANY change to a roster must be processed by your Club Registrar your Club Registrar will work closely with the NVYSL Roster Processor to review, justify and approve any roster changes a roster change is not finalized until it appears in an approved roster from the NVYSL Roster Processor NVYSL Roster Processor : Rosemary Laverdiere 18

20 There is no Offside Rule Understanding U10 Modified Rules Goal kicks must be taken from a distance of approximately 6 yards from the end line Goalkeepers cannot throw, kick or punt the ball beyond midfield cleared ball must first touch a player or the field on the defensive side Penalty Area is the area 12 yards from the goal-line, touchline to touchline Penalty kicks will be taken from a distance of 9 yards from the goal line during a penalty kick, all players from both teams not involved in the penalty kick must be beyond midfield Substitutions may be made prior throw-in your favor if a team is making a substitution on its own throw-in, the other team may also make substitutions 20

Coaching organization and theory, ideas and suggestions about organizing practices and game days become a resourceful and creative Activity Leader, shape your kids' soccer environment teaching and correcting dribbling, passing, and shooting techniques ideas on parent education and learning theory F License Course : 8hour course for U10/U12 coaches ($70) Technically and tactically age appropriate activities for U10 and U12 players Information on how to design and implement an effective training session Thorough demonstration of basic technique in dribbling, passing, receiving, tackling, heading and shooting, elementary goalkeeping Basic tactical ideas in reference to the principles of play Discussions on the differences in coaching each gender, motivation and team building, injury prevention and management and ethics.
