2 Before you kick off The great thing about football is that it is easy to have fun and meet new people. So we encourage the coaches to introduce each other before kick-off, and work together to make the game more enjoyable for coach, players and parents alike. Generally there are no appointed referees and so each coach is responsible for arranging a suitable person to take on this duty. Remember we offer training in this regard and so it isn t that difficult to take on or share this role. If the opposition team is short of players and you have too many, then why not lend one or two of your players to make the teams equal. If your team is short The Game and you want to bring in another player to make up numbers, you must seek the agreement of the other coach, and if they do not agree, then they should not be allowed to play. Although this is competition, remember it s about the kids playing sport and enjoying themselves. The player numbers, duration and other factors, vary per Grade and the following table gives a brief outline of this:.grade Game Time Player Number # Ball Size 5 7 See Junior Framework x 20 mins 7 aside 10 2 x 25 mins x 30 mins 9 aside 12 2 x 35 mins 9 aside Open 2 x 35 mins 11 aside 5 # Player number is indicative, and can change depending on player availability From grade 8 there is a league competition and teams have goalkeepers. The teams play a round robin format with three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for a loss. Junior Framework The Game 5 th, 6 th and 7 th Grade Taupo Football Clubs 5 th, 6 th and 7 th grade players experience and play Football in a new and exciting way. With the help of Waikato Bay of Plenty Football and NZ Football, Taupo FC will begin playing within NZ Footballs junior guidelines called the Junior Framework.

3 The Game How will this affect your child on a Saturday morning? Each Saturday morning all Grade 5 and 6 players will meet at 9am at the top fields in Crown Park. Grade 7 will meet at 10am. Players will be placed into mini teams that they will stay in all season. A parent from each team will become the Game Leader to help the kids with the activities. The fun activities for each Saturday will be uploaded to the website during the previous week for Game Leaders to print out and use each week. Game Leaders will then run an 8 10 minute Football activity taken from the Junior Framework Curriculum At the end of that period, players rotate to the next Game Leader who will run the next activity There will be 2 activities carried out each week, followed by some small sided games without goalkeepers The 2 activities will focus on General Movement, Football Technique, and Football Coordination. Basic Equipment The basic compulsory equipment for a player shall consist of a jersey [provided by the club], royal blue shorts, royal blue socks, shin guards and preferably football boots. Shin guards are to be worn at all times on the inside of socks. Metal studs/sprigs are not allowed for Junior Football, for safety of the players. Other Things Players should not chew gum and all jewellery, piercings etc shall be removed prior to play, the referee may check each player and require removal. If a player is bleeding he/she must leave the playing area and only return when the bleeding has stopped. Referees are asked to check all studs/sprigs and shin guards prior to the commencement of the game Each team must wear shirts of a different colour to the opposition. In the event of a clash, the away team will request and wear bibs, which all Taupo teams are supplied with, in their issued Kit. The Game

4 Start of the Game A coin is tossed and the winner chooses the end they wish to kick into. The ball is in play when it is moved forward. The player who kicked the ball cannot kick it again until another player has touched it. Both teams must be in their own half and behind the circle. After a goal, the game is restarted from the centre by the teams against which the goal was scored. A goal may be scored directly from a kick off. Game duration The referee is the sole keeper of time during a game. The game shall be two equal parts as per the timing outlined in the previous table. Players have a right to a five minute half time interval. The clock is stopped for major time lost through injury or time wasting. It is important that all games are kept to their allocated timing. Out of play The ball is out of play when the whole of the ball crosses the line. Offside This is possibly the most contentious law of the game and is played strictly from grade ten and blatant off side played in grades eight and nine. The law states that players in an offside position, when the ball is touched or played by a team-mate, may not become actively involved in the play. A player is in an offside position when he or she is in the opponents half of the pitch and closer to the opponents goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent (usually the last defensive player in front of the goalkeeper). A player shall only be penalised for being in an offside position if at the moment the ball touches, or is played by one of his own team he is in the opinion of the referee: Gaining an advantage being in that position Involved in active play Interfering with play

5 When a referee awards an offside he should point one arm directly into the air above his head indicating an indirect free kick and the arm showing the direction. A free kick is taken from the spot where the offside is called. A goal cannot be scored from an offside it must touch another player. Free Kicks These are either Direct or Indirect and are taken from where the offence occurred. A direct free kick can be kicked straight into the goal. An indirect free kick must be played by another player before entering the goal Direct free kicks This is awarded against an offender for: Kicking or attempting to kick an opponent Tripping or attempting to trip an opponent Jumping at an opponent Charging an opponent Striking or attempting to strike an opponent Pushing an opponent Tackles an opponent to gain possession of the ball o making contact with the opponent before touching the ball Holding an opponent Spitting at an opponent Handles the ball deliberately If a player commits any of the above offences in their penalty area then a penalty kick is given to the attacking team at the penalty spot. In that case only the kicker and the goalkeeper are allowed in the penalty area. The goalkeeper stands on the goal line between the posts. The goalkeeper can move along the line but cannot step backwards or forward off the line until the ball is kicked.

6 Indirect free kick An indirect free kick is awarded against a player for: Dangerous play eg lifting a boot too high against another player Offside Obstruction eg when the ball is not within two paces Charging unfairly eg when ball not within playing distance Charging the goalkeeper unless they are playing the ball, obstructing a player or outside the goal area Time wasting by the goal keeper Using a team mate to gain height to head the ball Intentionally obstructing the goal keeper from putting the ball into play Sending Off Generally this rarely happens at this level, but the player can be sent from the field with no replacement for the remainder of the game for: Violent or serious foul play Throw In Using offensive, insulting or abusive language o plus an indirect free kick Persisting in breaking the laws following a caution o plus an indirect free kick Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the players goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty The throw in is taken from the point where the ball crossed the line, by the player of the team that did not touch the ball last. The thrower must use both hands and throw the ball from behind and over their head; both feet must be in contact with the ground and be behind or on the line. If the thrower throws incorrectly they are given one chance to take it again (up to and including grade eleven) then if they again fail to throw correctly, the other team gains the throw. Opponents must stand at least two metres from the thrower.

8 Goal Kicks These are taken by the defending team when the ball is touched by the attacking player and crosses the line outside the goal. The ball must be kicked outside the penalty area before it can be touched by another player, or the kick is retaken. All attacking players must be outside the penalty area when the kick is taken. The goal kick can be taken from any point within the goal area by any player of the defending team. Corner Kicks These are taken by the attacking team when the ball passes over the goal line, outside the goal, having been touched last by one of the defending team. A Goal maybe scored directly from a corner kick. Tips on making the game enjoyable The players learn the rules as they play and the best coaches and referees encourage that by using commonsense when interpreting the rules. With younger ages it requires a guiding role and as such the Club encourages the following approach to the rules. Ten years and younger Football 101 Injury: Stop play for any injury Offside: Play to the rules and penalise blatant offside, but do not split hairs over marginal decisions. Throw ins: As long as a player is trying hard to throw the ball, do not penalise them. If they are jumping off the ground, show them how to do it properly. Goal Kicks: Goal kicks are taken from the nine metre line and the opposition must retreat to their half of the field (this is played up to and including grade ten). Referees should educate as well as deliberate, tell the players what you are doing and why so they learn, encourage and praise.

10 The League Structure The league is based on a round robin with each team playing each other twice (weather permitting and also depending on number of teams in a grade). Teams then enter play offs at each level with a variety of trophies at stake. For smaller grades a cup competition is also generally run in the last few weeks of the season. Representative Football Extra Time Every year the Club enters teams into representative competition between other clubs in the Bay of Plenty. Players are either spotted or asked to attend trials on the recommendation of their coach. This is open to only the best players, and is designed to develop those children for the future of the Club. Holiday Programmes The Club runs endorsed holiday programmes from WAIBOP and also the Ricki Herbert Academy. see website for details Where does the money go? Extra Time Every year the Club has received questions around the cost of the sport. We pride ourselves on providing value for money. The Club has fixed outgoings, and they are for affiliation fees to Waikato/Bay of Plenty Football, and New Zealand Football. The Club also has to pay for the upkeep of the pitches, the watering, lighting and line marking. Full details will be available on our junior website after the season starts. In addition the Club has other normal overheads associated with running a club and buildings, and these are also paid for by the fees.
