You don't stop playing because you grow old; you grow old because you stop playing! February 2006 This newsletter is published for the Sun Cities Senior Softball League, and is made possible through our sponsors. Dennis Farrar Editor SENIOR TAKES HIS LAST SWING SCW RESIDENT, PHIL BATOW PLAYS HIS FINAL SENIOR SOFTBALL GAME Dennis Farrar & Julie McGlynn PHIL BATOW Photo: Dennis Farrar P hil Batow really knew the game. I m sure all of us have our special moments and stories we could tell about this remarkable individual. Phil played his last game of the Sun Cities Senior Softball League on Thursday, January 12, Phil, sporting the #4, was a catcher for the Sun Country Credit Union, managed by Julie McGlynn. He has played his game since the 1970 s. Phil thought he would slip out quietly, but on this game day everyone thanked him for being a part of their lives for so many, many years. Phil thinks no one knows how young he really is, but most of us do know. Without giving Phil s age, I have been known to say to some of you, When I see Phil playing this game we all love, I know that I have at least 36 more years of softball left in me. I won t tell you how Larry Kuberka joins the many players who shake hands with Phil to thank him for playing the game with them. (You can see other farewell pictures on page 5.) Photo: Dennis Farrar old I am, I only hope that the Lord will bless me with good health, and many years as Phil. Phil was truly an inspiration to all of us. Phil has been the icing on the cake to all of us, and an added smile to the game. Sun Country Manager, Julie McGlynn says, It was my privilege to have Phil on the Sun Country team for the fall 2005 session, and his decision to retire was quite a surprise. He s a remarkable individual and although he often felt he wasn t contributing to the team effort, I d like to let everyone know what a team player he s been. In the sixteen games he played, he had 14 hits, (twice went 2 for 4), scored six times and had four RBIs. He finished the session with a.299 batting average, equal to many a highly paid professional! His head was always in the game and he often sacrificed himself at first base to advance the other runners. He was quoted in the Daily News Sun as saying I can t throw. I can still run, but my arm stinks. Many of us could say the same thing about our arms, our bats, our legs; but what a great way to spend time with friends under this big Arizona sky. It s not what we can t do, but what we can do that counts. Good job Phil, and thanks. Editor s Note: I know that many of you feel as Julie and I do. We will all miss Phil behind the plate. Hope Phil stays in touch. When you see Phil please join me in thanking him for playing the game with all of us. Scott is very accommodating; if you have an idea for a special photo just ask him, I'm certain he will help you out. Envelopes will also be available to present to Scott indicating items you would like to purchase along with the actual pricing. All you need do is make out a check payable to Sun Photography and he does the rest. ANNUAL SOFTBALL BANQUET GETS CLOSER Jim McGuire As many of you know already the date of the Annual Softball Banquet has been set for Friday, March 24, 2006 and will be at 11:00pm. The banquet will be held in the Palm Ridge Auditorium. There will also be prizes and entertainment. The cost has not been determined, and tickets will be available through your managers after the first of March. DEVOTED FAN OF THE FANS Jack Borst I'm sure it has been said before, probably several times, but it can never be said often enough. The support given our leagues by the ladies and fans who brave the elements to watch our games is invaluable to all of us players. Realizing that our style of play may possibly fall a wee bit short of perfection makes us doubly appreciate a friendly cheer and a pat on the back now and then. From all of us on the field a great big thank you for being there. I m Jack Borst, a devoted fan of the fans. Page 2 of 10

Ken Skinner OVERTHROWS Runners are always awarded two bases on overthrows, which go out of play or become blocked as a result of hitting loose equipment belonging to or a team member of the defensive team that does not belong on the field. Regardless of who made the throw, two bases are awarded from the last base touched at the time the ball left the hand. Direction of runners has no bearing on the award. When an overthrow is made on a runner returning to a base, the runner is awarded two bases from that base. EXCEPTION: If the runner was returning to first base and the throw was from the outfield and it left the outfielder's hand while the runner was between 2B and 3B, but the runner was between 1B and 2B when the ball went out of play, the runner would be awarded home. The award of bases is determined by the position of the front runner if two runners are between the same bases at the time of the award. Two runners between first and second will be awarded second and third; however, if two runners are between second and third, both will be awarded home. Should the umpire make an error in the award of bases, after one pitch has been thrown to the batter (legal or illegal) the umpire cannot change the award. When a fielder loses possession of the ball on an attempted tag and the ball then enters the dead ball area or becomes blocked, all runners are awarded one base from the last base touched at the time the ball entered the dead ball area or became blocked. Carol Bowden The Sun Cities HOT FLASHES are off and running to an 8 0 start in their inaugural season. The team is comprised of women from the 3 in house teams; Bosom Buddies, Farrar Chiropractic and Lakeside Florist. Although we do not practice together, our team has the skill and knowledge to be very competitive! The team displays an awesome hitting average over.600 and tenacious defense. Our games are on Saturdays versus teams from Pebble Creek, Traditions and Sun City Grand. The schedule begins in November and will end in April. Check the bulletin board at Liberty Field to find us next weekend. Our success has come through the encouragement and support of Loran Swanson, Ray Early, Dennis Farrar, Coaches Bob Morgan and Bill Schwingendorf and team sponsors Arvid and Kay Peterson Realtors. We can't thank them enough! All the many successes we have had could not have been possible without the league identifying the special place women's softball should have in the communities. It has made a world of difference to many women. We appreciate the fan support and will continue to give you a game worth watching! OK, START COUNTING! Sharon LeMoine My 1st grade class at Nadaburg Elementary is in a school wide contest on who can collect the most Campbell soup labels and Box-Top for Education labels. Box tops can be found on General Mills Cereal boxes, Betty Crocker cake mixes and icings. They're found on an assortment of items. I have placed a big container in the SCW Clubhouse, in case anyone would like to just drop them in. Page 3 of 10

In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are limbs, therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg. BATS ARE FOR SWINGING, NOT FOR THROWING John Doherty A number of players and umpires have been accidentally throwing their own or others' bats into the metal fences at the fields. This happens especially as players on-deck retrieve bats when going to the plate. Please be careful when tossing a bat back toward the dugout. Otherwise cracks, dents or scuffs can damage the metal of some very expensive bats, either yours or someone else's. And an observant umpire may disqualify the bat. Thanks for your consideration of others. Editor s Note: I d also like to add that this is a safety issue as well. We would feel really bad if we injured one of our team mates by tossing a bat back to the dugout. Please also think safety. Remember Safety starts with an S, but begins with U. National League Committee Bill Nyblade Bill Nyblade Chairman Glen Carroll Member Rich McAndrews Member Roy Nelson Member The purpose of The National League Committee is to handle issues concerning the NL and then present them to the SC and SCW Clubs for action. If you have any concerns or questions about the National League, please don t hesitate to contact a committee member at your convenience. FOR THE HEALTH OF IT Terese Farrar, DC Since I have become more involved in the activity I have noticed that one of the biggest problems is getting over the injuries that may, and do happen. My husband reported someone told him that muscle strains are permanent. I beg to differ. It Dr. Terese Farrar depends on what you do with them. Continuing to push yourself and not let them heal and you will notice them for a long time. Getting care and letting them have some time to heal and you will be back to the activity in better shape sooner. Soft tissue strains means that the blood and fluids that are there to help you repair (you do this daily and just don t realize you are!) are in greater amounts. Let them sit there instead of flushing them out and fibrosis will set up making those muscles stiff and less responsive. One of the best therapies is ultrasound with electrical stimulation followed by heat to flush out those fluids. Checking out your biomechanics that may have been the reason it happened in the first place and correcting it with an adjustment is also another option to use to improve the body. Supplementations of certain food products can also be of a benefit to repair the system faster. Contact my office for further information. We do take most major insurances and Medicare (although Medicare does not cover the therapies your secondary might). Terese Farrar DC W Meeker Blvd #9 Sun City West AZ Page 4 of 10

NEW LEAGUE BOARD CHANGES COMPLEXION WE THANK THE OLD & WELCOME THE NEW John Doherty The Sun Cities Senior Softball League Board is formed from members of the SC and SCW Clubs. In January, the League's make up changed dramatically. All eight of its members for the past year retired and were replaced by a smaller group of five new members. The streamlining was due to formation of the National and American League Committees which now handle some of the League's prior activities. We the members of the League have nothing but praise and thanks for the outgoing group of eight. Under the leadership and fine endeavors of President Bob Stouthamer from SCW, they left the League in outstanding condition. Bob certainly knew how to delegate, but he took responsibility for lots of projects requiring a great deal of personal time and effort. He had super support from folks like Vice President Jim McGuire from SCW and Secretary Mike Graham from SC. Topping off the other unselfish volunteer support were Directors Glen Carroll and Bill Allen from SCW plus Bill Buxton, Ira Mallory and Bill Nyblade from SC. A fine group indeed. They quietly went about getting the job done. We players rarely thought about or knew what was going on because it all went so smoothly. So now, please give them a pat on the back and say thanks when you see them on the fields. Ya Team! On January 18, the new group of five board members elected Arvid Peterson from SC as League President (the Presidents alternate SC-SCW each year). Bob Stouthamer handed Arvid his huge, highly organized binder representing work of the past year and said, Memorize It! Arvid took over the rest of the meeting and seemed to enjoy it, knowing he had lots of support. Larry Kuberka from SC was elected Vice President and Dennis Farrar from SCW as Secretary. The two Directors are Don Gault from SC and Dick LeMoine from SCW. The following year there will be two members from SC and three from SCW. We thank you gents for volunteering and wish you all happy decision making on behalf of us members. UNIFORM RULE CHANGE This Uniforms rule revision applies to both the American and National Leagues. The effective date is 1/24/06. Revised January 18, 2006 A. GENERAL B. ORGANIZATION C. UNIFORMS The Club furnishes socks, pants, shorts and caps/women s visors. Articles of uniforms are for league or club play only and are not to be used for nonleague/club activities. Alterations are not permitted except for temporary tucks for fit. Any permanent alterations will result in a charge to the player. Knee socks and caps will be replaced on an exchange basis only, as will shorts and pants worn out or damaged by play. All articles of uniform are property of the club. Any player who resigns his membership must return shirts, pants and shorts. In support of our sponsors, a full league-issued uniform consisting of cap/woman s visor, pants or shorts, socks (pulled up), and the team shirt must be worn so the sponsor s name is clearly visible and shirttails are tucked in. All players, coaches and managers must wear their league issued uniforms. Players not assigned to a team must also be in full uniform with the exception of a sponsor s jersey. These players must wear a jersey that conforms to the game of softball. In case of cold or inclement weather, the only additional clothing allowed will be jackets/sweat shirts. Other clothing may be worn underneath the uniform. Players will not be allowed to play unless dressed in their properly worn, league-issued uniforms. Once the game has started, the manager will not be allowed to substitute for an out-of-uniform player. The team will be charged with an out each time the player would have come to bat. Any exceptions must be approved by the American or National League Committees in advance, and those players will be advised. This rule must be enforced by managers and umpires for the benefit of the sponsors, for proper newspaper/team pictures and for the professionalism of the Sun Cities Senior Softball League. By the American League Committee: Ron Blackwell, John Doherty, and Peg Swanson Page 6 of 10

Dennis Farrar With this months editorial, I am happy to report that all our inside remodeling is getting near to completion. (I think?). What a journey this has been. I would also like to thank all of you for your encouragement and support while my wife Terese and I have been through quite a challenge with this project. I would especially like to thank Ira Mallory, manager for A.E. Lewis and Ken Dorian manager for Newton Auto for their patience with me having to miss a few games. Having been a manager myself, I know that sometimes this can be very challenging trying to get subs, and most of you know me; I would rather be on the field with you. I would like to invite anyone who has an article of interest to the clubs or players to write me an article for the newsletter. I know that we have a lot of school teachers out there as well as other professionals who can do this. A special thanks to Jack Borst for his article this month (p.2). I know that there are others of you out there that can contribute. If you have an idea that would make your newsletter more interesting to read, let me know. I m just the editor. Yes I can do it, but it s more interesting when others get involved and show off their talents. Remember when we were kids and loved to get our names in the local paper? Well, now s your chance to feel like that kid again. You can them to me at: editor@azsrsoftball.com.
