CAROLINA HURRICANES NEWS CLIPPINGS July 2, 2014 Quiet Day for Hurricanes as NHL free agency begins BY CHIP ALEXANDER RALEIGH On the day NHL free agency began, the Carolina Hurricanes biggest announcement was the hiring of a new team president Don Waddell. The Canes did re-sign forward Jiri Tlusty on Tuesday to a oneyear $2.95 million deal. They picked up former Colorad Avalanche center Brad Malone, agreeing on a two-year, $1.3 million deal, and added depth at goaltender by signing Drew McIntyre. But general manager Ron Francis said it would be mostly quiet day for the Canes in terms of any major moves, and quiet it was. Peter Karmanos Jr., majority owner and chief executive officer of the Hurricanes, introduced Waddell, former general manager and president of the Atlanta Thrashers. Karmanos said the two would work together on the business side, with an immediate priority being pumping up lagging season-ticket sales. Karmanos called Tuesday one of the more desperate days of the hockey year, adding the Canes did not act out of desperation and make expensive, splashy signings. A lot of our brethren are out running around seeing how much money they can spend, and when the dust settles they ll figure out whether or not they have a hockey team, he said. We ve got a very good hockey team and if it s necessary to add apiece or two, we have some (salary-cap) space to do that Two Players who were on the Canes roster at least most of last season found new teams. Forward Manny Malhotra signed with the Montreal Canadians, and goalie Justin Peters accepted a two-year deal with the Washington Capitals. Malone, 25 was signed to replace Malhotra the Canes fourthline center. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, Malone played 32 regular-season games and six playoff games last season for the Avs. He s a big guy, skates well, physical, Francis said. He had some games up top in Colorado and we think he s kind of a guy who s up-and-coming. I think he should be good for us. He can kill penalties and change the look of our fourth line with a little more size and physicality. Francis is said the Canes tried to re-sign Malhotra but said Malhotra wanted a two-year commitment. The Habs then offered Malhotra a one-year deal for $850,000, which Francis said was more than the Canes were willing to pay. A lot of big money was being thrown around (Tuesday), Francis said. Defensemen Brett Bellemore also was after a two-year, Francis said, and at a price much higher than he should be at. The canes added a No. 3 goalie by signing MacIntyre to a oneyear, two-way that will pay him $600,000 in the NHL or $250,000 in the American Hockey League, with a guarantee of at least $300,000. MacIntyre, 31, was with a 2.53 goals-against average in 48 regular-season games for the AHL s Toronto Marlies in He was 10-4 with a 2.08 goals-against average in the 14 Calder Cup playoff games as Toronto reached the Western Conference final. MacIntyre also appeared in tow NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs, going with a 2.53 goals-against average. Francis said he talked to a lot of teams about trades involving goalie Cam Ward, but said the decision was made to go into next season with Ward and Anton Khudobin as the tow goaltenders Ward with a $6.3 million salary-cap hit and Khudobin $2.25 million. We still believe in Cam Ward, Francis said. We thought we were better served having him in our lineup than taking some of the offers that were out there. Tlusty s was finalized Tuesday afternoon. Tlusty, whoe earned $1.7 million last season, was injured in preseason and scored 16 goals after a 23-goal season in 48 games in The Canes missed the Stanly Cup playoffs for the fifth straight season, and Karmanos said the team would show a financial loss for the year. He said season-ticket sales were soft and said he wanted to boost the season-ticket base by 30 to 4- percent, to 14,000-15,000 season tickets (or equivalents). Waddell, 55, was the general manager of the Thrashers from 1998 to 2010, when he became team president, and served several roles with USA Hockey. Waddell succeeds Jim Rutherford, who wa general managers and president of the Harford/Carolina organization for 20 years. Rutherford stepped down as GM in April, though he remained with the organization in an advisory role before being hired as general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins in June. Waddell said Francis would handle the hockey operations while he focused on such business tasks as raising sponsorship revenue, marketing and ticket sales. The best marketing is winning, Karmanos said. It s a tribute to our fans they ve stuck with us as long as they have.

CAROLINA HURRICANES NEWS CLIPPINGS July 2, 2014 Canes add Malone, keep Tlusty, hire Waddel By JOEDY McCREARY, AP Sports Writer RALEIGH, N.C. The Carolina Hurricanes opened the NHL's free-agent period Tuesday by adding one forward, keeping another one and bringing on an upper-level executive. The Hurricanes agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent center Brad Malone and gave Jiri Tlusty a one-year. They also hired former Atlanta Thrashers general manager Don Waddell as the president of Gale Force Sports and Entertainment, which operates both the team and its arena. Jim Rutherford had served as both the team's general manager and president of Gale Force before he stepped aside in April to allow Ron Francis to slide into the GM's spot. Rutherford was hired last month as the Pittsburgh Penguins' GM, and now Waddell will run the team's business-related operations while the hockey matters will fall to Francis. "Donnie's got great credentials," owner Peter Karmanos Jr. said. "I believe the best way to grow a business is not by cutting expenses, it's by growing revenue. Don's going to work on the process and the organization itself, and we're going to try to move the Hurricanes forward from the business side." Karmanos called the start of free agency "one of the more desperate days of the hockey season" because "a lot of our brethren are out running around trying to see how much money they can spend." He insisted "we've got a very good hockey team" and it didn't make many big waves, adding Malone and keeping Tlusty while allowing a couple of role players center Manny Malhotra and backup goalie Justin Peters to leave. Malone, 25, will make $600,000 this season and $700,000 in and projects as a fourth-line center. Francis called him "a big, physical forward" who "helps improve our team's depth up front." He had three goals and two assists in 32 games with Colorado this season and has played parts of the past three seasons with the Avalanche. Tlusty, 26 and a restricted free agent, had 16 goals and 14 assists in 68 games last season. He will make $2.95 million. Two players from last year's team have signed elsewhere Malhotra received a one-year deal from Montreal while Peters agreed to a two-year with Washington. Peters' departure appears to have cleared up Carolina's uncertain goalie situation. The Hurricanes carried three goalies Anton Khudobin, Cam Ward and Peters at the end of last season. Francis said he "talked to a lot of teams" about Ward, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner during the Hurricanes' run to the 2006 Stanley Cup and the subject of trade speculation this offseason. "We still believe in Cam Ward," Francis said. "At the end of the day, we feel Cam is a good goaltender. He's had a couple of tough years and some weird injuries." Francis said Malhotra was looking for a two-year while the team was willing to offer only one year.

CAROLINA HURRICANES NEWS CLIPPINGS July 2, 2014 Canes Steer Clear of Frenzy By Michael Smith While some general managers around the league were busy printing money and signing players to exorbitant s, the Carolina Hurricanes went about their business comparatively quietly. The team made three hockey moves within the opening hours of free agency, signing forward Brad Malone to a two-year, re-signing forward Jiri Tlusty to a one-year deal and signing goaltender Drew MacIntyre to a one-year deal. Malone, 25, will add some size to the Canes bottom six, as he is a 6-foot-2, 207-pound depth forward who has played in the Colorado Avalanche s organization after being drafted by that team in He s a big guy who skates well and is physical. He got some games up top in Colorado, and he s a guy that s up-andcoming, getting that chance to prove himself, said Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Francis. He should be good for us. He ll be able to kill penalties and change the look of our fourth line to get more size and physicality. Tlusty, one of seven qualified restricted free agents, comes back into the fold for a year at $2.95 million. The 26-year-old forward recorded 16 goals and 14 assists (30 points) in 68 games last season. He led the team with 23 goals in 48 games a year prior. MacIntyre, 31, is an AHL All-Star goaltender who was was with a 2.53 goals-against average and.917 save percentage in 48 regular season games for the Toronto Marlies last season. The signing fills the void for a veteran, depth goaltender within the organization. The signings didn t exactly create waves in the sea of free agent frenzy news but that s not a bad thing. We re still looking at a few things, but it s not going to be anything major, Francis said. There s a lot of big money being thrown around today. Francis identified a few pieces the Canes could still stand to add, including an additional forward and another defenseman, as well as looking to fill a couple of holes in Charlotte. We re very surprised with how quickly things progressed, he said of today s frenzy. We didn t think it was necessary to blow everything up. We still think we have a lot of good pieces. Among the pieces that Francis and the Canes like is goaltender Cam Ward. After talking to a number of teams about potential trade options, Francis said he elected to retain the 30-year-old who holds a litany of franchise netminding records. At the end of the day, we feel Cam Ward is a good goaltender. He s had a couple of tough years and weird injuries, but we still believe in him, Francis said. We thought we were better served having him in our lineup than taking some of the offers that were out there. With Justin Peters signing a two-year, one-way deal worth $1.9 million in Washington, the Canes will likely enter training camp with the duo of Ward and Anton Khudobin in the crease. The more competition, the better for everybody, Francis said. In other personnel news, forward Manny Malhotra signed a one-year deal in Montreal. Francis said the Canes were interested in re-signing the 34-year-old, but he was initially seeking a multi-year deal, despite ultimately accepting a single-year in Montreal on Tuesday. Defenseman Brett Bellemore is exploring his options in the open market, according to Francis. We had some negotiations with him earlier. He was looking for a two-year deal at a number we thought was much higher than he should be at, he said. He s testing the free agent market, and we re looking at other options. Finally, forward Andrei Loktionov, who was not issued a qualifying offer, became an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday. Loktionov, 24, was acquired from New Jersey in a trade deadline day deal. Though he injured his shoulder while playing for Russia in the IIHF World Championship, Francis said that didn t figure much in the decision not to re-sign him, noting there were a few players in Charlotte, including Zach Boychuk, who could assume the same role on the team in the upcoming season. Waddell Tapped as President of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment In a non-hockey announcement on Tuesday, Canes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. introduced Don Waddell as the president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment. The brief news conference can be seen here. Waddell, 55, comes to Carolina after spending the last three seasons as a professional scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has assembled an extensive hockey pedigree, within the NHL, minor leagues and internationally with USA Hockey. I really enjoy the business-side of our sport, Waddell said, adding he will jump head-first into his new position next week. We want to be able to make sure we can raise the revenue so

CAROLINA HURRICANES NEWS CLIPPINGS July 2, 2014 we have the resources to make our team as good as we possibly can. We are going to work together on the business side of the Hurricanes. I believe the best was to grow a business isn t by cutting expenses but by growing revenue, Karmanos said. We re going to try to move the Hurricanes forward from a business side. Brett Sutter Signs with Minnesota Written by Paul Branecky The Checkers will need a new captain next season. After not agreeing to a new with the Hurricanes before the July 1 deadline, center Brett Sutter signed a two-year, twoway deal with the Minnesota Wild. Sutter, who wore the letter C on his jersey for the last three seasons in Charlotte, had been with the Carolina organization since November of Sutter leaves the Carolinas ranked third on the Checkers alltime points (142) and assists (86) lists. He is fourth in goals (56) and games played (255), having enjoyed a transformation from role player to top-line scorer at the AHL level in recent years. He was the second captain in team history, having taken over for Bryan Rodney following its inaugural AHL season. Sutter is the third member of last season s team to officially sign elsewhere, joining defenseman Mark Flood (KHL) and goaltender Mike Murphy (Austria). Along with Nicolas Blanchard, Matt Corrente, Aaron Palushaj and others, he was one of a handful of unrestricted free agents who were still on the market as of this posting. Former Checkers goaltender Justin Peters, who had more or less graduated to an NHL role last season, signed with the Washington Capitals earlier Monday. In addition to needing to fill Sutter s leadership void, the Hurricanes will likely be in the market for a center who can fill a similar scoring role in Charlotte and be in the mix for NHL recalls when necessary. One of the internal candidates to fill that role is his cousin Brody, who is the only remaining Sutter from a previous group of three that also included Brandon Sutter, now of Pittsburgh Penguins. Earlier Monday, the Hurricanes signed Brad Malone, recently of the Colorado Avalanche organization, to be their new fourthline center a position that Brett Sutter filled at the start of last season. Another notable transaction from the first few hours of free agency saw former Checkers defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti sign with Vancouver following a season in the KHL. Hurricanes re-sign wing Tlusty, add goalie MacIntyre NHL.com Forward Jiri Tlusty signed a one-year, $2.95 million Tuesday to remain with the Carolina Hurricanes, who also signed goaltender Drew MacIntyre to a one-year, two-way and forward Brendan Malone to a two-year deal. Tlusty, 26, had 16 goals and 30 points in 68 games last season. Those numbers were down from the career highs of 23 goals and 38 points he had in 48 games in with Carolina. In seven NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Hurricanes, Tlusty has 73 goals and 142 points in 344 games. MacIntyre, 31, was with a 2.53 goals-against average and.917 save percentage in 48 regular-season games for the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League last season and with a 2.53 GAA and.922 save percentage in two games for the Maple Leafs. The will pay MacIntyre $600,000 in the NHL or $250,000 in the AHL for the season, with a guarantee of at least $300,000.

"Drew had a strong season last year and provides veteran depth for our organization in net," Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis said. Malone, 25, is a 6-foot-2, 207-pound depth forward who has played in the Colorado Avalanche s organization after being drafted in He s a big guy who skates well and is physical. He got some games up top in Colorado, and he s a guy that s up-andcoming, getting that chance to prove himself, Francis said. He should be good for us. He ll be able to kill penalties and change the look of our fourth line to get more size and physicality. Niskanen, Orpik determined to prove critics wrong for Caps By Greg Wyshynski The Washington Capitals handed defensemen Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen $60.30 million in free-agent money, but the biggest beneficiaries of these s may be the North American carpentry industry, who spent most of Tuesday repairing floors that had been damaged by thousands of dropping jaws... Both played for the Capitals frequent tormentors the Pittsburgh Penguins Orpik, 33, had played 11 seasons there while Niskanen, 27, was there for four seasons. Orpik, a stay-athome-defenseman and one of the NHL s most notorious hitters, inked a 5-year, $27-million deal with the Capitals; Niskanen, a puck-moving defender who had a career year in , signed a 7-year, $40.25-million that was the longest deal handed out on Day 1 of free agency. It s a big commitment by our organization, said GM Brian MacLellan. I m excited about it. I hope they are too. Was Orpik worth that deal? The defenseman laughs at the query. That s probably a better question for the people who gave out the, Orpik said. "No matter who you are, someone s going to think you were overpaid or underpaid or got what you deserved. Was Niskanen worth that deal? The better you play in previous years, expectations go up," said Niskanen. "The larger the money, the expectations go up. I think I m ready for that challenge. I played top four minutes about 80 percent of the year last year, said Niskanen, who set a career high in points (36) and goals (10) while getting the injured Kris Letang s minutes for most of the season. I had a breakout year last year. And now the challenge for me is how to move forward and get better. It s something Todd and I have talked about. *** Todd is Washington assistant coach Todd Reirden, the third Penguins exile welcomed to the Capitals recently. He coached the defense in Pittsburgh under Dan Bylsma before getting swept out in their regime change. He found a home with new Capitals coach Barry Trotz and, somewhat conveniently, now has two of his former defensemen wearing red, white and blue next season. These players were targeted well before I got the job, he proclaimed. I was watching just like you guys have. Orpik said Reirden s hiring was a factor in his decision, but Niskanen nearly describes the coach as a father figure. He s been huge. Four seasons ago, I got traded from Dallas to Pittsburgh, and my career wasn t in a good spot. Todd helped me come up with a plan to become a regular again, and we would build from there, said Niskanen. From Day 1, he was honest with me. Wanted me to get better. Extra video sessions. Extra time after practice. He built my confidence back up. Niskanen was a hotly recruited player early in the free agent process, but said some of the larger money deals his agent Neil Sheehy a former Capital himself anticipated didn t come through. He said the Capitals offer was only beaten by one other, allegedly a 7-year, $42-million deal from the Detroit Red Wings. He said he made about 16 phone calls with this agent on Tuesday as the offers rolled in. It was kind of cool to see, he said. The last four days have been surreal for Niskanen. Over the weekend, he got married, scheduling the date 15 months earlier. "I didn t anticipate it being this big of a weekend for me. About a month ago, it clicked that this might be a pretty big week for me, he said. Because of his nuptials, he didn t get a chance to visit the Capitals in Washington. So he depended on the scouting report from someone who did: Brooks Orpik, who traveled to D.C. on Saturday. When I met with Barry [Trotz] and saw what his vision was, it was kind of a no-brainer, said Orpik. So he relayed that information to Niskanen in two phone calls on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Even if he didn t really see it as a recruiting call. I think we were both just a little overwhelmed at the time. It was good just to vent, said Orpik. I don t want to take the credit for [his signing]. But it hopefully provided some good information. Niskanen said it helped influence him. I woke up this morning, and I didn t know where I was going. I was leaning towards Washington, he said. In the end, it felt right to go to Wash. That s not a phrase you hear many big name free agents saying about the Washington Capitals. That was the case for years under GM George McPhee; yet in MacLellan s first summer at the helm, he landed two significant UFAs. Page5

Another anomaly, given the team s history: Bringing in a player like Orpik, a veteran defensive defenseman with a Stanley Cup ring. *** We ve liked Brooks for a long time. We need that style of player, said MacLellan. The young guys look up to him. When a young guy plays with Brooks, he seems to play better. He actually forged a friendship off the ice with Ovechkin under rather peculiar circumstances when both were in Sochi. I got to know him pretty well at the Olympics, said Orpik. We did drug testing together after the U.S./Russia game. Neither of us could pee at the time, so we got to spend a couple of hours together. (No doubt a stream of conscious conversation ) Orpik believes two things about the Washington Capitals: That they ve underachieved, but that they eventually might not. The whole situation just felt right. I ve played against the group enough. I know what the potential is for that group. How hard it can be to play against them, he said. One of the players that was hardest on the Penguins was Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals star against whom Orpik was frequently matched. I think we ll both be happy about it because we tend to beat on each other pretty good, said Orpik. Niskanen and Orpik didn t come cheap. They didn t come without criticism and expectations. But they come to Washington to join a mentor in his quest to revamp their defense, and to help the Capitals do what the Penguins were so adept at preventing them from doing. They re not far away from winning, said Orpik. TODAY S LINKS: CAR home html Calgary Flames Anaheim Ducks The Ducks signed Clayton Stoner to a four-year worth $13 million in the hope that he is coming into his own as a shutdown force in front of their net. Arizona Coyotes Thomas Greiss signed a one-year deal worth $1 million to join the Penguins, the Coyotes found his replacement in goalie Devan Dubnyk, who agreed to a one-year deal worth a reported $800,000. The Coyotes also added center Joe Vitale, who signed a three-year deal for approximately $3.35 million. The Coyotes also signed defenseman Dylan Reese to a two-way. He was previously with the organization from Boston Bruins The Bruins have one remaining unrestricted free agent on the roster, defenseman Corey Potter, while they do have a number of restricted free agents to work out new deals with, including notables Torey Krug and Reilly Smith. Buffalo Sabres The Sabres filled a need for veteran leadership on defense, acquiring blueliner Josh Gorges from Montreal for a second-round pick in the 2016 draft. The 29-year-old Gorges also fills a major need on the Sabres' payroll chart. He has four years remaining on his with a cap hit of $3.9 million per season. The Flames remain interested in C Paul Byron, who had not been tendered a qualifying offer. The team has parted ways with longtime strength/conditioning coach Rich Hesketh. Stepping in is Ryan van Asten, a University of Calgary grad who spent the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Kings. Also heading elsewhere via free agency after the Flames set them loose were: C Ben Street (Colorado), C Blair Jones (Philadelphia), D Chris Breen (Boston), and G Joey MacDonald (Montreal)... Still on the market are RW Kevin Westgarth, D Chris Butler, and D Derek Smith... Restricted free agents turning free agents (and not given qualifying offers by Calgary) were C Paul Byron, C T.J. Galiardi, RW David Eddy, D James Martin, and G Olivier Roy... D Shane O Brien s was bought out and the team put him on waivers. Carolina Hurricanes The Canes on Tuesday added depth at goaltender, agreeing to terms with Drew MacIntyre on a one-year, two-way. The deal will pay MacIntyre $600,000 in the NHL or $250,000 in the American Hockey League for the season, with a guarantee of at least $300,000. The Canes announced Tuesday the team has agreed to terms with winger Jiri Tlusty on a one-year. The deal will pay Tlusty $2.95 million for the season. The Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday signed free-agent center Brad Malone to a two-year. The deal will pay Malone $600,000 for the season and $700,000 for the season. The Sabres haved added their fifth piece of the day, signing defenseman Andrej Meszaros for one year and $4.125 million, according to TSN. He joins acquisitions Josh Gorges, Brian Gionta, Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick. Page6

Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said Tuesday that talks with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on extensions are "ongoing." The GM previously said he had hoped deals for the standout forwards would be done by Tuesday and that they would be announced in tandem. Peter Regin patiently waited for the Hawks to call and offer a deal. The center, who signed a one-year, $650,000 Tuesday, was an unrestricted free agent after finishing last season with the team. The Hawks bolstered their minor league system by signing three players likely headed to Rockford of the AHL to one-year deals, including goaltender Scott Darling of Lemont. Also joining the organization were forwards Cody Bass and Pierre-Cedric Labrie. Colorado Avalanche About an hour after losing Paul Stastny to the division rival St. Louis Blues via free agency, the Avalanche turned some of the frowns of their fans upside down by signing unrestricted free agent Jarome Iginla from the Boston Bruins. Iginla agreed to a three-year, $16 million. The Avs also signed free-agent center Jesse Winchester Tuesday to a twoyear, $1.8 million. The Avs improved their blue-line depth by adding unrestricted free agents Bruno Gervais and Zach Redmond, both right-handed shooters. Gervais, 29, comes from the Philadelphia Flyers' organization, where he played in the minors last season. Redmond, 25, split time with the Winnipeg Jets and their AHL affiliate last season. Redmond signed a two-year deal paying him $750,000 annually. Gervais' salary was not immediately available. The Avs allowed forward Brad Malone, defensemen Cory Sarich and Andre Benoit and goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere to enter the free-agent marked. Dallas Stars The Stars on Tuesday acquired center Jason Spezza from the Ottawa Senators for three players and a draft pick. Dallas gave up Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill and Nick Paul, along with a second round pick in 2015 to get Spezza, the captain of the Senators and the second overall pick in 2001, and prospect Ludwig Karlsson. Spezza, 31, has just one year left on his and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Detroit Red Wings The Detroit Red Wings took care of some internal business Tuesday, locking up Riley Sheahan and Petr Mrazek. Sheahan, a restricted free agent, was signed to a two-year deal worth $1.9 million - he'll make $850,000 the first year, $1.05 million the second year, averaging out to a salary cap hit of $950,000. Tallon finally addressed the back end at 5 p.m., when he snared L.A. Kings' two-time Stanley Cup champion Willie Mitchell for $8.5 million over two years. With approximately $30 million to toss at free agents and his own RFAs in an effort to return the playoffs, Tallon was unable to land any star players. He did provide veteran leadership and lots of Stanley Cup experience with Bolland, who will receive $27.5 million over five years, as well as Bruins' enforcer Shawn Thornton (2 years for $2.4 million). In an effort to bolster the 29th-ranked offense, Tallon began his shopping spree by signing top-six Penguins center/winger Jussi Jokinen to a fouryear, $16 million. He continued to renovate his fourth line by signing veteran center Derek MacKenzie to a three-year, $3.9 million deal. Tallon, not showing much confidence in backup goalie Dan Ellis - who was 0-5 with a 4.81 goals-against-average after arriving in the Tim Thomas trade - brought in Jets backup goalie Al Montoya for two years at $2.1 million to back up Roberto Luongo. Los Angeles Kings The Los Angeles Kings signed a pair of depth forwards on Tuesday afternoon, inking former Blues right wing Adam Craknell and former Avalanche left wing David Van Der Gulik to one-year s. Minnesota Wild Thomas Vanek had Minnesota high on his list from the start. Vanek agreed Tuesday to a three-year, $19.5 million, giving an improving lineup a potentially prolific scorer and allowing the Austrian-born left wing to settle in an area he has made his home since college. Defenseman Clayton Stoner (Anaheim), left wing Matt Moulson (Buffalo) and center Cody McCormick (Buffalo) departed the Wild as unrestricted free agents. Others in that category not expected back are left wing Dany Heatley and goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Defenseman Nate Prosser could return for the right price. The Wild also signed defenseman Stu Bickel (one year) and center Brett Sutter (two years) to two-way s, adding depth with players who'll likely bounce between AHL affiliate Iowa and the parent club. Montreal Canadiens By the time the first day of free agency ended on Canada Day, the Canadiens had welcomed right-winger P.A. Parenteau, defenceman Tom Gilbert and centre Manny Malhorta, while saying goodbye to captain Brian Gionta, alternate Josh Gorges and veteran centre Daniel Brière GM Marc Bergevin made his biggest move on the eve of the free-agent shopping spree when he sent Brière to the Colorado Avalanche for Parenteau and a fifth-round draft pick. The Canadiens came out of the day with 20 players under and about $16 million left in cap space. A big chunk of that will be needed to sign restricted free agent Subban to a new. Bergevin said it was possible the team could also sign another free agent or make a trade. That leaves Danny DeKeyser and Tomas Tatar as the remaining restricted free agents. Mrazek, slated to spend next season with the Grand Rapids but tabbed to be full-time in Detroit in , was signed a one-year extension worth $737,500. Edmonton Oilers Dallas Eakins fingerprints were likely all over the signing of free-agent defenceman Keith Aulie to a one-year, $800,000 Tuesday. The 6 6, 228-pound Aulie, who departs the Tampa Bay Lightning, played for the Edmonton Oilers head coach with the AHL Toronto Marlies over a couple of seasons. With the Oilers signing New Jersey blueliner Mark Fayne to a four-year deal, Aulie appears to be a depth D-man, possibly No. 7. Florida Panthers New Jersey Devils The Devils have signed Scott Clemmensen to a one-year, two-way that will likely see him play in Albany (AHL) this season, but gives the team insurance in goal. Lou Lamoriello also confirmed that the Devils re-signed winger Steve Bernier to a one-year, $6000,000 deal before he became an unrestricted free agent and gave center Stephen Gionta a two-year, one-way for an average of $850,000 per season. The Devils lost defenseman Mark Fayne, who signed a four-year, $14 million with the Edmonton Oilers. New York Islanders The Islanders quickly filled their most glaring need, signing goaltender Chad Johnson to a two-year deal worth an average of $1.3 million. The Isles also went the under-the-radar route by signing defenseman T.J. Brennan to a one-year, $600,000 deal. Just as he did four years ago when he first became general manager of the Panthers, Dale Tallon turned to his familiar Chicago roots and signed Blackhawks' Stanley Cup hero center Dave Bolland on the first day of free agency Tuesday. Page7

New York Rangers Weeks after reaching the Stanley Cup finals, the Rangers are a changed team. Enter the veteran defenseman Dan Boyle and forward Tanner Glass. Exit left wing Benoit Pouliot and defenseman Anton Stralman, who left with Brad Richards, whose was bought out. Blues sign Stastny to four-year deal On the opening day of National Hockey League free agency, the Blues signed arguably the top center available to a four-year, $28 million on Tuesday. Stastny will be paid $6.5 million in , $7 million in both '15-16 and '16-17 and $7.5 million in ' He also received a no-trade clause. Boyle, a 15-year N.H.L. veteran who turns 38 on July 12, joins the Rangers after six seasons with the San Jose Sharks and probably will man the point on the power play. Boyle was a teammate of Martin St. Louis with the Stanley-Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning in Boyle signed a two-year, $9 million deal. The Rangers re-signed the valuable Dominic Moore to a two-year, $3 million deal and added Glass, 30, to replace the traded Derek Dorsett on the fourth line. The Rangers also signed defenseman Mike Kostka, 28, to a one-year. He split last season between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ottawa Senators In dealing captain Jason Spezza and East Coast Hockey League forward Ludwig Karlsson to the Dallas Stars, the Senators retrieved a second round pick in 2015 and these three players:alex Chiasson, RWAlexander Guptill, FNick Paul, LW. Philadelphia Flyers The Flyers were unable to make any major moves when the NHL freeagency period opened Tuesday, but they did re-sign goalie Ray Emery to be Steve Mason s backup. Emery, who will be 32 when the season starts, signed a one-year deal for $1 million. Earlier in the day, the Flyers signed veteran goalie Rob Zepp to play with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Zepp, 32, who received a one-year, two-way for a reported $600,000. The Flyers did not re-sign Cal Heeter, 25, who had a strong season with the Phantoms in Pittsburgh Penguins The Penguins' overhaul continued Tuesday when they lost six players in free agency. Defensemen Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik left for division rival Washington, while left wing Tanner Glass signed with the division-rival New York Rangers. Forward Jussi Jokinen went to Florida, while center Joe Vitale went to Arizona and defenseman Deryk Engelland went home to Alberta with the Calgary Flames. When it was over, the six players had been signed to $100.1 million worth of s. The Penguins, who signed free-agent defenseman Christian Ehrhoff to a one-year worth $4 million didn t stop there. They re-signed center Marcel Goc to a one-year deal worth $1.2 million this evening,at the same time they announced a agreement with minorleague defenseman Taylor Chorney, son of former Penguins defenseman Marc Chorney. Ehrhoff, 31, became available when Buffalo bought out the final seven years of a 10-year, $40 million Sunday. San Jose Sharks While other teams shopped in the NHL free agent market Tuesday, Sharks general manager Doug Wilson reinforced his plan to rely more on his own younger players next season by trading veteran defenseman Brad Stuart to the Colorado Avalanche. Tampa Bay Lightning After clearing out salary cap heading into free agency, the Lightning found a way to utilize some of that available space Tuesday to land one of the top defenseman on the market in Anton Stralman. The right-handed shot, which was coveted by the Lightning, signed a five-year worth $22.5 million for a salary cap hit of $4.5 million. In addition to Stralman, the Lightning signed 6-foot-6, 240-pound center Brian Boyle to a three-year worth $6 million that carries a cap hit of $2 million.. Tampa Bay also signed 27-year-old right wing Mike Blunden, who had been with Montreal, to a one-year, two-way and re-signed center Mike Angelidis to a one-year, two-way. Tampa Bay is also looking for a backup goaltender after Anders Lindback was not issued a qualifying offer and signed a one-year with Dallas worth $925,000. Toronto Maple Leafs Leafs GM Dave Nonis signed defenceman Stephane Robidas to a threeyear deal in the opening two hours of free agency on Tuesday, giving him $3-million a season. The Leafs also made a small trade, dealing Jerry D Amigo to Columbus for the rights to winger Matt Frattin. They did miss out on keep centre Dave Bolland, which is just as well given Florida gave him a ridiculous for $5.5-million a season over five years. Washington Capitals The Capitals have agreed to terms with their second former Penguins defenseman on Tuesday, the first day of free agency, signing Matt Niskanen to a seven-year deal worth $40.25 million at an annual cap hit of $5.75 million. Niskanen joins Brooks Orpik, who signed a five-year, $27.5-million deal on Tuesday, and former Carolina goaltender Justin Peters (two years, $1.9 million) as Washington s free agent haul on the market s first open day. Signing Niskanen pushes the Capitals up against the salary cap ceiling, set last week at $69 million. According to CapGeek, the Niskanen deal leaves Washington with less than $1 million in space. Forward Michael Latta has re-signed with the Capitals for a two-year deal worth $1.15 million after extending a qualifying offer to the non-roster player on Sunday, the team announced. Winnipeg Jets The Winnipeg Jets have landed a centre in free agency, signing Mathieu Perreault yesterday. Perreault signed a three-year deal for an average annual value of $3 million, which is a jump from the $1.05 he earned last season as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. The Jets have lost backup goalie Al Montoya, who signed with the Florida Panthers for two years and $2.1 million, as well as defenceman Zach Redmond to Colorado for two years and $1.5 million (and a one-way ) to the open market. The Panthers also landed centre Dave Bolland, who was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, paying Bolland $5.5 million average annual salary for a fiveyear period. In return, San Jose will get Colorado's second-round pick in the 2016 draft and sixth-round pick the following year. The Sharks did sign minor-league defenseman Taylor Fedun to a one-year. St Louis Blues Page8

Vancouver Canucks The Vancouver Canucks new general manager did sign veteran goaltender Ryan Miller to a three-year deal at $6 million a season, but missed out on the goal-scorer his offensively challenged team desperately needs when Jarome Iginla signed with the Avalanche. the Canucks Tuesday signed unrestricted free agent goaltender Ryan Miller, 33, to a three-year, $18 million US instead of opting for Jonas Hiller at two years for $9 million.
