4 Notes From The Right Seat From The May Meeting... Dang, missed it by a week. The weekend scheduled for the annual SAM 21 Ranch Romp was unbelievable in terms of the weather. Saturday the temperature reached about 104 degrees with hardly a breath of wind. Some of the more prudent of pilots thought, based on Wx predictions from several sources, felt the temperature would moderate on Sunday to a level conducive to allowing pilots to quit the comfort, read survival, of the beautiful shade trees at the Schmidt Ranch and go flying. Sure enough, as predicted the temperature moderated all right, but with it came a cool wind estimated at 15, gusting to 25 MPH, beginning at dawn and, regrettably, lasting throughout the entire day-virtually un-flyable for all but the most daring pilots who clearly were risking life, limb and airplanes. Your Editor had his wardrobe completely backward as I wore long pants on Saturday, and shorts on Sunday I nearly had heat exhaustion on Saturday and wished I had brought a jacket on Sunday - go figure. The most hearty were the pilots in the Old Time Sailplane event. Using a high-start in the face of the fierce wind, managed the requisite number of flights, but hardly set any records. (see results on page 5) The most notable flight of the weekend started with a normal take off of a Bomber piloted by Mike Warner. Everything was fine for about the first four seconds and then the hatch securing the flight pack flew off, with the battery following it in a graceful arc toward the ground. There followed a flight which, without control ended up more like a U-control pattern of horizontal, but ever descending circles until the ill fated model encountered two sets of electrical wires crossing the street fronting the Ranch resulting in a shower of debris fluttering to the Continued on Pg 7?? 7 From the Right Seat, Continued from Pg 4 More 2013 Ranch Romp In Pictures While most, if not all, of us has had a similar experience, the most remarkable aspect of this particular flight happened the next day. When the old time Glider pilots were wrapping up for the day, while walking back to the take off area with their high start equipment, they stumbled on the soaring battery, much to the delight of Mike and his dad. From the shouting and high five-ing one would have thought they had discovered the mother of all thermal generators. Keep smiling Mike. All together the event was considered a success as, despite the weather conditions,18 contestants entered and all but one actually flew. The lunch, each day was well received. Chef Brian Sargent, in a very colorful apron served bbq d dogs and burgers for lunch both days and, according to participants, did an outstanding job on the LARGE steak dinner on Saturday evening. This, in addition to buying and transporting all the food for the lunches and dinner and plenty of water, lemonade, tea and sodas, which were lifesavers on Saturday. C.D. Steve Roselle, in spite of a very devastating, very recent personal loss, (see below) did an admirable job of keeping fist fights to a minimum, and Asst. C.D, Jake Chichilitti, in his usual style helped out as required. Special thanks to Lescher Dowling for the vast majority of the excellent photo record of the event. Very well done Lescher. And last, but not least, thanks to Dave Lewis for tabulating the results for publication. Altogether, a great team effort! On another subject I must, with sadness report from Dave Bruner, the loss of another former SAM 21 member, Bob Rooman who died in Oct. of Dave Lewis recalls that he was a kind and generous person who did beautiful work on O.T.s. We stayed at his house a couple of times on trips to and from SAM CHAMPS. In Memoriam... Janet Roselle, known to all SAM 21 members and many SAM International Members, passed away on June 4, Janet is shown here on the left in happier times with husband Steve and Steve s sister, Val - where else, but at the Schmidt Ranch. God Speed Janet... A Memorial service is scheduled for July,13th at the First Congregational Church, 1985 Louis Road, Palo Alto CA at!:00 p.m. The CLIPPER - official newsletter of SAM 21 June, 2013 Page 7
8 The following is a basic set up/test procedure which has been developed by several modelers who are familiar with the Winged Shadow Sky Limit altitude limiting device which will be the Standard unit used for the ALOT event at the 2013 SAM Champs. Followed carefully and completely these tips will insure your success... Altitude Limited Old Timer Set Up/Test Elements Upon plugging in the programmer and entering setup mode you are prompted with a "Throttle to Idle" message. This is a prompt to remind you to move your throttle stick to the position desired when the altitude or time limit is reached. When you then press the button under the arrow (SEL) to move on to the next screen, the Sky Limit saves this throttle position. This is how the Sky Limit "learns" your particular setup. Note that electric flyers choose a higher idle point so they can restart their motors, while fuel flyers typically use a fully off position. Also, this setup "learns" your throttle channel direction (normal or reversed). You may see the "Throttle to Idle" message even before entering setup in some conditions. For example if you land with the throttle stick still high after a shutdown and plug in the Programmer. In this case it reminds you to reduce the throttle before proceeding (to prevent an unwanted electric motor startup). In any case, whenever you see the "Throttle to Idle" message you should always make sure your transmitter is on and the throttle stick is down before proceeding. Consider using some method of assuring the throttle is closed, and stays closed until ready for flight using, for example, a rubber band on the throttle stick, wrapped around the Xmtr. Here are some tips to avoid accidentally setting the wrong throttle position: 1. Before plugging in the Programmer make sure your transmitter and receiver are ON and linked (wiggle the elevator for example). With some radios the receiver won't produce any throttle signal if the transmitter is off. In this case the Programmer will display "Signal Error". However, many PCM and 2.4GHz radios receivers will produce a throttle signal without a transmitter signal. [For a variety of reasons, it is good practice to always turn on your transmitter before turning on your receiver.] 2. Make sure you have your fail-safe properly set. Most newer radios have a fail-safe feature that will shutdown the throttle if the transmitter signal is not present. However, you need to set this up to have it work properly. If not, it could produce full throttle instead. You might have to check your radio's manual for instructions on setting the fail safe function for your system. If you have the transmitter off at the "Throttle to Idle" message and the wrong fail-safe setting, the Sky Limit will not be setup correctly. 3. If you move the Sky Limit from one model to another, be sure to enter setup mode to re-learn the throttle position. The new model might have the throttle channel reversed. 4. Never ignore the "Throttle to Idle" message. Think of it as a command -- not a suggestion. Here is a test you can perform that might help diagnose a problem with the unit (or at least restore some confidence in its operation). If you turn on the time limit, you can view the throttle operation on the ground. Throttle to idle; Set your altitude as usual, but also set a time limit (say 15 or 20 seconds). Unplug the Programmer. Now advance your throttle and leave it high. At timeout, your throttle servo should go to the shutoff position. This is the same position it will go to at the altitude limit. Once you are satisfied with its operation, you can reenter setup and turn the timer off (or set it to whatever value you wish). 9 SAM 51 Fun Fly - Woodland/Davis May 24, 2013 Somewhat unsure about the predicted wind forecast, your Ed set out early for what proved to be a two hour drive from Livermore. The trip was uneventful up until the final 1.5 miles, which turned out to be on a dusty gravel road? to find that l was the first to arrive. Great venue featuring much open space and grass take off area. Several members of S-51, including Eut Tileston and Bob English straggled in by 9:00. A total of about 8 fliers showed up. The weather could not have been better. Light and variable wind and warm temp. Part of my reason for attending was to deliver a new camera plane to Eut, which was accomplished. Before I left I watched a 1/2 A flight of 24 minutes plus and managed to skin a knuckle on my left hand by backing it into the prop on my idling OS.35 Bomber - Bummer... Some Thoughts On The ALOT Activity At The SAM 21 Ranch Romp A very late decision to hold an informal ALOT trial event at the recent Ranch Romp may have limited participation in the experimental event. In spite of that handicap, at least three fliers made a total of 10 official flights. All Alt lim airborne units were set at an altitude cut off of 700 feet per the agreement of the SAM Champs managers present. A time limit for engine/motor run was set to off. This event provided insight to several parts of the activity that cropped up in the preparation, timing and scoring issues which will need to be addressed for the forthcoming SAM Champs event. Element 1) Of the three fliers entered, two had the Alt Lim module installed and ready for program check prior to arriving at the field. The other one was installed and programmed in the field with no technical problems. Be ready to provide assistance. Recommendation: Encourage installation on the bench in your shop, but be prepared to have tech assistance available and to sell units as most people seem inclined to opt to buy. I have sold 6 to $50.00 ea. - two at the contest. This is below list price by about $5.00, but sponsorship can pick up the difference - the discount is attractive. Element 2) Rules, including how many flights allowed and how scored? Recommendation: Allow four flights, score total of best three. We used single longest (11:03) and as a result unwittingly handicapped the two other fliers who put up four flights each while flyer No.1 only put up two - emphasizing the luck factor. Assuming no additional flights were taken, we are, after all, trying to encourage flying, flyer No.2 would have placed first, flyer No.3 would have placed second, and flyer No.1 would have placed third. (see score sheet on page 5) Separate score sheets should be prepared specifically for the event. A Max time of 10 minutes per flight appeared appropriate. (keep it moving) Element 3) Trust, but verify. The programmed setting for all flights must be verified by the Event Manager, or his designee, prior to each anticipated flight or no score. Element 4) Timers should be well informed of their role regarding engine/motor cutoff timing and be prepared to visually verify throttle closed per the pilot notice of cut off. Pilots responsible for announcement. Element 5) Keep it simple. Use the K.I.S.S. principle... The CLIPPER - official newsletter of SAM 21 June, 2013 Page 9
