6 Baseball has been a staple in Columbia dating back to the late 1800s and last season returned for the first time in nearly 12 years. Fans in South Carolina s capital had been without a professional baseball franchise since the Capital City Bombers moved to Greenville, South Carolina, following the 2004 season. Here are some historical highlights: Columbia s first known baseball game took place in The South Atlantic League s Columbia roots reach as far back as 1892 when the Columbia Senators became the city s first professional team. The Columbia Skyscrapers were the first sustained team in the city, later changing its name to the Gamecocks, Commies and Comers the latter two after Columbia s commissioner-based government at the time. In 1927 after a fire destroyed a portion of the Comers ballpark on the state fairgrounds Pittsburgh Pirates owner, Barney Dreyfuss (a Hall of Famer, credited with creating the modern World Series) donated the funds to build what would soon be known as historic Capital City Stadium. A road outside the park is named in Dreyfuss honor. COLUMBIA BASEBALL HISTORY The Cincinnati Reds were one of the first major league teams to form an official affiliation in Columbia. Hall of Famer Frank Robinson was a star for the Columbia Reds in 1954 and 55. Robinson then broke into the National League as a 20-year-old rookie the following year and went on to garner 12 All-Star selections. Professional baseball was absent from 1962 to 1982 until the Shelby (NC) Mets moved to Columbia. The team changed its name to the Capital City Bombers in 1993 honoring the heroic Doolittle Raiders fighter pilots during World War II who trained for combat in Columbia. The franchise won three South Atlantic League championships during its 21 years in Columbia before moving to Greenville, South Carolina, following the 2004 season. Mets stars like Todd Hundley, Jose Reyes and David Wright all passed through the Palmetto State. Ten years later, in October of 2014, Minor League Baseball granted approval to move a team back to Columbia. The following May, the Savannah Sand Gnats announced their franchise would relocate into the brand new Spirit Communications Park for the 2016 season, bringing professional baseball back to the Palmetto State s capital. The Fireflies drew 261,134 fans to Spirit Communications Park during the 2016 season a Columbia professional baseball record. Ex-Reds, Pirates and Red Sox infielder Pokey Reese is from Columbia. He won a World Series with Boston in WHY FIREFLIES? Columbia Fireflies 2016 Inaugural Season The inspiration for the "Fireflies" name comes from a particular species of firefly the photuris frontalis and its amazing behavior which is on display annually at Congaree National Park. Each spring, as baseball season begins, the photuris frontalis perform a wonderful and mysterious light show. For a few weeks, hundreds of these fireflies synchronize their flashing each night, emitting light, as one, in unison. The mass synchronization that occurs on the banks of the Congaree is one of only a few places on Earth where such a spectacle is known to take place. Fireflies is also a fitting name for this "Famously Hot" city. Both the flaming tail at the base of the firefly logo and the "C" and "F" (for "Columbia" and "Fireflies") coming together as a flame are nods to the city's slogan. As the capital of our great state, the Fireflies primary wordmark incorporates the palmetto tree and crescent moon from the state flag. Our colors are the midnight blue of the South Carolina night sky, a neon green/yellow representing the "flash" of the firefly and a crisp silver used on the wings of the bug. 6 COLUMBIA FIREFLIES

17 2016 SEASON REVIEW The inaugural season of Columbia Fireflies baseball was one of the most prolific debut campaign s in Minor League Baseball history. Professional baseball officially returned to Columbia for the first time in over 11 years when the first pitch in Spirit Communications Park history was hurled on April 14, The $37 million-dollar palace saw 261,134 fans push through the gates in 2016, a record for a Columbia professional baseball organization. Spirit Communications Park was quickly recognized nationally for its magnificence by two leading baseball publications. Ballpark Digest named the Fireflies home the 2016 Ballpark of the Year and Stadium Journey rated it as the best ballpark experience in the South Atlantic League. The Fireflies were piloted by 2015 South Atlantic Manager of the Year, Jose Leger. The first victory of the season and in franchise history was a no-hitter against Charleston on April 9. Thomas McIlraith, Alex Palsha and Johnny Magliozzi combined to blank the RiverDogs, 9-0. It was the first of many on-field achievements Fireflies fans had a frontrow seat for in Palsha and three other Fireflies P.J. Conlon, Vinny Siena and David Thompson were all named South Atlantic League Mid- Season All-Stars before their promotions to the Mets advanced-a affiliate in St. Lucie, Florida. Conlon s 2016 season was so successful, he was named the New York Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year. The Placentia, California, native s 1.65 ERA (in 23 starts) wasn t just the lowest among Mets minor leaguers, it was the best in Minor League Baseball. Conlon also finished with a 12-2 record (12 appearances in Columbia, 12 in St. Lucie) at one point winning seven consecutive starts from April 14-May 23 during his time with the Fireflies. Thompson garnered Columbia s Sterling Award an honor the Mets present to their best prospect at each minor-league level. Following Conlon s lead, Thompson ended 2016 with an organization-best 95 RBIs. Despite 13 different players landing on the disabled list at some point in 2016, the Fireflies still completed the year with a overall mark going in the first half and in the second. Conlon and Thompson weren t the only to dazzle at Spirit Communications Park. One of the finest individual performances of the season occurred on July 16 in Columbia. The Mets 2013 second-round selection, Andrew Church, tossed the first complete-game shutout in franchise history. The 21- year-old allowed just one hit and struck out 10 Rome Braves hitters. In nine Columbia starts, the righty went 5-2 with a 2.22 ERA and later was elevated by the Mets to as high as triple-a (Las Vegas). Catcher Patrick Mazeika led the team with a.305 batting average in 70 games. His on-base percentage (.414) was best in the league among hitters with 250 or more plate appearances. 20-year-old first baseman Dash Winningham paced the club in the power department with 12 home runs, 31 doubles and 69 RBIs. Kevin Canelon (6-11, 3.64), Chase Ingram (8-9, 4.60) and Joe Shaw (8-9, 4.46) led the Fireflies on the mound all starting more than 23 games. To top off a wonderful inaugural season, the Fireflies, Spirit Communications Park and the City of Columbia was awarded the 2017 South Atlantic League All-Star to be played on June 20, BALLPARK DIGEST BALLPARK OF THE YEAR No. 1 BALLPARK EXPERIENCE IN THE SAL BEST NEW LOGO AND BRANDING 2017 MEDIA GUIDE 17
