Vipr turns around and says Gntlmn, you ar th bst of th bst, w ll mak you bttr. Whil slightly corny in a 1980s kind of way th statmnt yilds a thm I hav passd on to my studnts and pursu myslf. No mattr how much xprinc, flight tim, ratings on has accumulatd thr is always an opportunity to bttr ons flying abilitis. With thousands of hours flying commrcial airlinrs, and an activ CFI taching in airplans ranging from th J-3 to th Cirrus SR20 I wantd a program that would allow m to tak an airplan to th dg of an nvlop I had not xplord. I wantd to boldly fly whr I had not flown bfor. I slctd th APT program at th prstigious San D Tuckr s Tutima Aviation Acadmy in King City, CA. I had mt th lgndary Tuckr at Airvntur 2013, it fuld my intrst to gt back

This is not to say that thr ar not othr fin schools out thr, howvr Tutima s nam within th industry is known for quality. Th APT is th flagship program offrd at Tutima, with th option of complting th cours in a Extra 300L or Pitts S2B/C. I chos th Pitts as I also wantd a chckout, in cas th arobatic bug bit and I dcidd to buy on, which I actually did a month latr. Th APT program is dsignd to tak th studnt through a sris of spins, from acclratd to invrtd spins and vrything in btwn. In th procss th studnt bcoms familiar with a slw of arobatic manuvrs, from loops to hammrhads and lomcvaks just to nam a fw. I flw two sortis a day; a brifing, flight, dbrif, quick lunch, brak thn anothr brif, flight and dbrif. Th schdul has bn rfrrd to as arobatic camp, which sums it up prfctly. As I larnd advancd arobatic manuvrs from outsid snap rolls to torqu rolls it bcam apparnt quickly that whn I mssd up so to spak I found myslf in som uniqu positions, allowing m th opportunity to us my spin rcovry and unusual attitud skills to rcovr. Nw lssons in nrgy managmnt would b larnd, as wll as a rfind undrstanding of P-factor, Gyroscopic Prcssion, and Torqu. Torqu taks on nw maning pushing th throttl forward in a 260hp Pitts vs th Cssna 172 so many of us ar usd to. As th wk concludd I was abl to fly th 2013 Sportsman known squnc to rciv my graduation crtificat. Th wk lft m a littl tird but xhilaratd, thirsting for mor. I wantd to larn mor, practic mor, and vntually compt. I ralizd that jtting across th country btwn flying my 767 for work and rnting tim at Tutima would b rstrictiv from a schduling and financial standpoint. I also nd to apply what I had larnd and start building xprinc on my own. Qu th bst Christmas prsnt I hav vr bought myslf, N79JM, a 1977 Pitts S1S. Arobatics has givn m tools to b a bttr pilot and instructor. Whthr an xtnsiv arobatic cours or a spin training cours, I ncourag any pilot rgardlss of xprinc lvl to xpand thir flying skills.
