WE LC M O E Welcome to the Brindleyplace Dragonboat Race The hardest part is done. You ve managed to persuade your colleagues to join you in fancy dress and brave the Birmingham canals for the 18th Brindleyplace Dragonboat Race. The rest is lots of fun and relatively easy depending on how competitive you are! I d like to thank you all so much for giving up your time to take part in this very worthwhile event. Without you and your teams raising lots of money for Cure Leukaemia, we simply wouldn t have a race. With a record-breaking fundraising target of 100,000, the Brindleyplace Dragonboat Race is a critical part of the charity s 1million Centre Appeal and we re working closely with Cure Leukaemia to make it the most memorable year yet, with even more fun and games for the whole family to enjoy for free. Happy paddling everybody. Nathan Sanghera Nathan Sanghera Marketing & Events Executive for Brindleyplace

SP THE ON R S O Dear Teams, Deutsche Bank is proud to be returning in 2017 as principal sponsor of the Brindleyplace Dragonboat Race. This will be our sixth year supporting the event and each year we are more and more impressed by the level of support and enthusiasm shown by the competitors. Working with the Brindleyplace Management team and Cure Leukaemia, our aim is to make this year the biggest and best Dragonboat Race to date and on Saturday 24 June volunteers from the Deutsche Bank team here in Birmingham will be out in force, both as paddlers and fundraisers. The race is always one of the highlights in our corporate volunteering calendar. As well as being a fun event, it s hugely successful in raising valuable funds for great local causes and we are delighted to be supporting Cure Leukaemia for the third time this year. It s the effort and enthusiasm of those taking part that makes the event such a success, so I encourage you to get involved however you can. I wish you all the best of luck in the race and with your fundraising efforts. Best Wishes Paul Anderson Paul Anderson Head of Deutsche Bank in Birmingham brindleyplace #BPDragonboat17 brindleyplace.com
THE A R CH I T Y HOW YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE For an unprecedented third consecutive year the Brindleyplace Dragonboat Race will be in aid of blood cancer charity Cure Leukaemia. Thanks to Deutsche Bank s unwavering support as sponsor for the sixth year running, every penny raised can go directly to the charity. This year, all funds raised by you and your colleagues will go towards Cure Leukaemia s 1m Centre Appeal to double the capacity of the internationally renowned Centre for Clinical Haematology at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. The expanded Centre will: Double the amount of leukaemia patients that can be treated Double the number of world first, clinical drugs trials that can be opened Allow more vital specialist research nurses to be employed Immediately help save more lives Hasten global progress towards eradicating all forms of blood cancer within 25 years YOUR FUNDRAISING As this is such an important cause we have set a fundraising target of 100,000, 10% of the additional funds Cure Leukaemia must raise for the 1m Centre Appeal. To achieve this amazing figure we need every boat and paddler to go above and beyond with their fundraising; which means: Raising a minimum of 2,500 per team (including the 500 deposit which must be paid by 28 April) Checking if your company will match fund to help boost your total Getting competitive before the event and checking the fundraising league table on the JustGiving page Don t stop at 2,500 keep going to help us hit the 100,000 target Our aim is to announce the total on the day, so try to hit your target two weeks before the event. You ll be able to keep an eye on the running total via the dedicated JustGiving page. You can also keep up-to-date with Cure Leukaemia s 1m Centre Appeal via /cureleukaemia

W A H T O PEC T T C EX E O N Y RA DA TIMINGS 10am Prompt Crew Registration Crews should ensure that they arrive at the competition site promptly at 10am. Each Crew Manager will need to register their team at the GABLE EVENTS REGISTRATION POINT on the canal and provide ALL completed paperwork by 10:30am am Crew Manager Safety Briefing 11.00am Racing Commences 5.30pm Final Commences 5:45-6pm Prize Giving & After Party ENTERTAINMENT Crowds will gather on both sides of the canal to cheer the teams on and the whole event will be broadcast live on the big screen in Central Square where you will be able to relax in between races. There will also be a host of free family-friendly activities taking place throughout the day, including live music, face painting, puppet shows and traditional Chinese dragon dancers, alongside a craft and food market. Please check Brindleyplace.com as we get closer to the event for more information. Please note: These timings are approximate. We will endeavour to keep the event to schedule, however we are always at the mercy of the volume of canal traffic.
SAFETY All competitors must wear a buoyancy aid (provided by the event organisers), have read the Acknowledgement of Risk Form, (available in the Crew Managers Information Pack, sent separately to the Crew Manager only) added their name & signature to their Crew List and had a safety briefing before they race, to validate their crews public liability insurance cover. The safety of all crews on the water is of prime concern to everyone associated with the event, not least the crew itself, who have a responsibility to conduct themselves properly, in both a competitive and social sense. Crew Managers are to ensure that their crews are fully briefed on the contents of the Crew Managers Information Pack. All crews will be checked by the Chief Boat Marshall, before they start racing, to ensure that they are Fit to Race. If a crew or competitor is deemed not to be fit to race, they will not be allowed to participate and may be disqualified for the remainder of the competition. Safety boat(s) staffed by qualified personnel will be on the water during races. An independent and professional emergency medical technician (EMT) with full response kit will be on site at all times during the event. Several of the event staff are also trained to deal with minor first aid incidents along with Brindleyplace Security. PRIZES There will be a host of top team prizes for the winners, plus prizes for the best dressed and of course the highest fundraisers. The unlucky losers will once again be awarded the Paddle of Pity just to give you some extra motivation on race day! There ll also be a fancy dress competition for the kids so the whole family can join in the fun. IMPORTANT! IF YOU RE READING THIS PACK, YOU WILL NEED TO DO THE FOLLOWING BY 28 APRIL: Appoint a Crew Manager and send us his / her contact details Think of an incredibly funny and/or embarrassing team name and fancy dress theme Pay your 500 deposit Once you ve registered and paid, the battle is on to beat the competition. Here s your step by step guide to everything you need to know: STEP 1: Fundraise, fundraise, fundraise! No physical sponsorship forms will be available so all participating teams will be required to set up a JustGiving page online at justgiving.com. All instructions on how to set up your JustGiving page will be sent to your Crew Manager in due course. See the Hints and Tips for Fundraising page for more information. STEP 2: Brainstorm fancy dress ideas! Remember - there is a prize for the best-dressed team so don t be shy. STEP 3: Complete all paperwork. It is the role of the Crew Manager to keep the team up to date and motivated ahead of the event. Brindleyplace will issue regular updates and we encourage all Crew Managers to share these with the team. STEP 4: Don t be late for race day! The Useful info page tells you where to meet and what facilities are available. STEP 5: Join in the official 2017 after party! Teams are invited to celebrate at Brindleyplace and wind down after a fun day of paddling. Supporters, friends and family are all welcome and each team will be awarded drinks vouchers. brindleyplace #BPDragonboat17 brindleyplace.com
IN U F SE U L OR F M A TI O N GETTING HERE FACILITIES A map of Brindleyplace can be found at the end of this pack. If you are planning to drive to Brindleyplace, we do have a pay-on-foot Q-Park car park onsite but we would recommend you pre-book your car parking as it will be busy on the day. Search Q Park Brindleyplace in Google for more details. Prebook online and get 10% off parking by following the online booking instructions and quoting BRINDLEYPLACE10. MEETING POINT The meeting point for all crews is the Boat Marshal Area located in front of the National SEA LIFE Centre on the tow path (directly opposite The Malthouse Pub). FOOD AND DRINK Hot & cold food will be available to purchase from the local produce market in Central Square or from the bars & restaurants in Brindleyplace. However, please be aware of your next racing time when ordering to avoid causing delays. We recommend bringing a supply of water for your team as paddling is thirsty work. High energy snacks like energy bars & bananas are also highly recommended! Alcohol and water sports do not mix. It is the Crew Managers responsibility to ensure that all their crew members are advised that any crew or competitor deemed to be unfit to race due to alcohol will be disqualified from the competition. This is for your own safety. Portaloos will be provided for exclusive use by crew members. These will be located adjacent to Central Square in front of the National SEA LIFE Centre. Gazebos will be provided next to the Brindleyplace Registration Tent for use by the participating teams in case of bad weather. Please do not bring any tents, gazebos or structures of your own as this could pose a health & safety risk. RACING The race element of the day will be operated by Gable Events; recognised as the market leader in the field of Dragonboat event organisation and is the only commercial Dragonboat event operator recognised and approved by the UK sports governing body, the British Dragonboat Racing Association. While previous experience of Dragonboat racing is not necessary, all crew members must be water confident whilst wearing a buoyancy aid in cold water. The minimum age for competitors is 16 years, and everyone under 18 years must supply parental consent in writing to Brindleyplace before they compete. The race distance is approximately 200m and will start from The Water s Edge and ICC and finish just before the Barclaycard Arena. All race results, apart from the semi-finals and final, will normally be based on times. Each crew will receive three races, conditions permitting, and their fastest two times will count. The crews with the fastest times go through to the semi-finals. From the semi-finals, the two winning crews will proceed to the Grand Final. Each crew will get the opportunity to race in a different boat and racing lane in each heat to ensure complete fairness.
RACE CONDUCT Time Keeping Crews failing to report on time may be barred from the competition. It is paramount to the smooth running of the event that crews report to the Boat Marshalling Area in plenty of time. Collisions Crews must paddle in a straight line and keep within their allotted lane from the start to the finish of the race. It is forbidden to knowingly impede other boats. Helms must order their paddlers to stop paddling if a collision is imminent. Crews that do not stop paddling and, by so doing cause a collision, risk being disqualified from the competition. Any crew that causes a boat to collide with another one, or that damages the boat or paddles of another crew, risks disqualification from the competition. Capsizing Any crew that deliberately causes their boat to capsize or that deliberately swamps or causes another boat to capsize, risks disqualification from the competition. CLOTHING AND BELONGINGS We suggest that all crew members bring a towel and change of clothes, as competitors can expect to get damp from the splashes made by fellow paddlers. There are no formal changing facilities so we would encourage teams to arrive in their fancy dress and bring a change of dry clothes with them. Local bars, restaurants and establishments may allow you to use their toilets as changing areas but please always ask a member of staff politely before entering. Crew members are advised not to wear jeans or boots in the boats. Footwear, NOT FLIP FLOPS, must be worn at all times whilst racing. We would advise that crews bring minimal personal belongings with them as there will be no secure place to store these items whilst racing. Any items left on the towpath is done so at each crew s own risk. KEY ROLES The Crew Manager has overall responsibility for the conduct and actions of the crew both on and off the water as well fundraising targets and deadlines. All Crew Managers must attend a pre-event briefing in the lead up to the race (date and location to be confirmed). Although teams may be larger, when racing, crews are not to exceed 11 persons including the drummer. Crews may race with less than 11 but the number in the boat must be the same at the finish of the race as at the start. You can reduce the number of paddlers to a minimum of 8 but you must always have a drummer. Crews may be mixed, all female or all male. Drummers must sit on the seat provided and actively beat the drum during the race. All crews will be allocated a qualified helm for each race by the Chief Boat Marshall. The helm will automatically become the Boat Captain once the crew is ready for loading and all crew members should take instruction from the helm and not their own Crew Manager whilst racing. Crews must follow directions of the Race Officials at all times. The Chief Official s decision is final and will be made in accordance with the race Rules & Regulations and any safety issues that might have arisen. EQUIPMENT All boats, necessary equipment for racing and buoyancy vests are supplied. Competitors can only use the paddles provided by the organisers. Wax or similar substances are not permitted to be used on paddles, gloves and/or boat seats or parts. brindleyplace #BPDragonboat17 brindleyplace.com
H I S T I N T A ND PS: FU N DR A I SIN G SPONSORSHIP BE SAFE AND LEGAL Make each team member responsible for raising 200 each to make it easier to reach the total of 2,500 (including the 500 deposit which much be paid by 28 April). Smash your target! Don t be afraid to ask everyone you know from customers to suppliers and colleagues and check with your company to see if they will match fund. Ensure your first sponsor s pledge is high and the others will follow, and don t stop when you hit 2,500 to help us reach that 100,000 target. JUST GIVING The easiest way for you and your crew to raise funds is through our preferred online donation platform, JustGiving. This year we will have a dedicated page for the Dragonboat Race where you will be able to track the fundraising progress of your team, your competitors and keep an eye on the grand total raised before the racing begins on 24 June! All instructions and links will be sent to your Crew Manager to make sure your are included in this page. Do not do anything that is illegal or dangerous. Brindleyplace nor Cure Leukaemia will accept liability for anything illegal, or be held responsible for any accidents that may occur in your fundraising activities. Ask permission of the owner/manager/ licensee, if you are planning to fundraise in a public building/ place. There are certain circumstances that you will need to seek a licence in order to complete your fundraising. REMEMBER Cure Leukaemia is relying on you to raise as much money as possible. There are two objectives for the race; to have lots of fun and raise a significant amount of money to help support blood cancer patients. So remember, every penny will count. If you are having problems raising the funds, please don t wait until the last minute to inform the organisers. Contact Nathan Sanghera at GVA, who will assist you as best as possible. LAST BUT NOT LEAST Cheques are to be made payable to Cure Leukaemia, and should be accompanied by a covering note stating which team the donation is from. Bank details are also available on request. Please send cheques to: Nathan Sanghera, 1st Floor, PMC, GVA, Number Three Brindleyplace, B1 2JB
