Plain Bob Doubles Touches The Grid Unpacks to: ( ) When studying the Method we saw how the Grid reveals the construction of Plain Bob Doubles as Plain Hunt on 5 for the first 9 changes, followed by a bell making seconds as the Treble leads, forcing the middle bells to dodge and the back bell to make places. This is repeated 4 times before all the bells return to their home positions in rounds (see unpacked pieces at above right), making a Plain Course of the Method just 40 changes long. We also found that (for example) the 2 nd bell only ever dodged with the 5 th bell, never the 3 rd or 4 th. Mathematically there are a total of 5! (Five factorial = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1) = 120 unique changes that it is possible to ring on 5 bells so, in order to ring all these changes, we need to swap some bells around to a new sequence, then ring the plain course changes again, etc. To do this a special call Bob is introduced which changes the work of the bells at the immediately following lead end. Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 1 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
The Bob At the lead end a Plain course lead end looks like this: If a Bob is called the lead end work changes to look like this: BOB called Affects Note that the Bob is called a whole pull before it takes effect as the Treble rings their backstroke in 2nds place. Comparing the two Grids above we can see that: Place Bell Pass Treble Due to do Do instead New Place Bell Do next 2 nd 4 5 Dodge 3-4 down Run in 2 nd Dodge 3-4 down 4 th 3 4 Long 5ths 5 th 2 3 Dodge 3-4 up Long 5ths (unaffected) Make 4ths & back to lead* 5 th Dodge 3-4 up 4 th Long 5ths 3 rd 1 2 Make 2nds Run out 3 rd Make 2nds * This last work, Make 4ths & back to lead, is often known as Making the Bob : Ropesight Note 1: When Making the Bob in 4ths: You ring over treble in 3rds on your way up to 4ths just as the Bob is called, And you ring over treble in 3rds on way down again. thus you ring over other bells in order A-T-B : A-T-B - effectively Plain Hunt on 4! Ropesight Note 2: When Making long 5ths, while Unaffected in the work you do, you will find that the bells you ring over will change at a Bob, as will the bells you work with afterwards: Thus, while at a Plain lead the bells (your coursing bells A & B) dodge 3-4 underneath you ; giving a sequence of : (Treble) A B A B (Treble) At a Bob lead a bell (B) makes 4ths underneath you while 2 bells (A & C) plain hunt in/out; giving a sequence of : (Treble) A B B C (Treble) Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 2 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
Calling the Bobs Calling 3 Bobs exactly 40 changes apart will give 120 unique changes: the Bobs can be called starting at the first, second, third or fourth lead ends - giving the 4 standard touches of Bob Doubles. 1 st Bob called at Bell Unaffected at each call 1 st Lead 4 2 nd Lead 2 3 rd Lead 3 4 th Lead 5 For a first try at calling a touch the Conductor can thus call BOB just as they start their long 5ths; calling 3 Bobs in this way will return the bells to Rounds after 120 changes just as their bell reaches their home position. The bell unaffected at each call is often known as the Observation bell as it is unaffected by the calls and can thus Observe the other bells making the Bob underneath them. Thus the suggested first touch above can be said to be Call yourself as Observation bell The Bobs can be called when ringing an affected bell too, and there are at least two ways to do that, including: Watching for the Observation bell starting its work in long 5ths (this requires good ropesight and will not be discussed further here) Calling yourself to do the Bob work in sequence: In Out Make The latter method can be demonstrated by taking as an example calling the 4 th as Observation: At the first Bob - at the first lead end The 4 th is Observation bell and so makes long 5ths unaffected The 2 nd Runs In The 3 rd Runs Out Coursing order now: (4) (ABC -> BCA) The 5 th Makes the Bob When the next Bob is called 3 leads later: The 4 th is Observation bell again and so makes long 5ths unaffected The 5 th Runs In The 2 nd Runs Out Coursing order now: (4) The 3 rd Makes the Bob When the last Bob is called 3 leads later: The 4 th is Observation bell again and so makes long 5ths unaffected The 3 rd Runs In The 5 th Runs Out Coursing order now: (4) (plain course) The 2 nd Makes the Bob And the touch come round a further 3 leads later. Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 3 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
To call the 4 th Observation each Affected bell thus does : < In Out Make > (from 2 nd) or < Out Make In > (from 3 rd ) or < Make In Out > (from 5 th ) A common mnemonic to help remember this sequence is Isle Of Man Another way to show this is as a variant of the Circle of Work: 5 4 th Obs 4 2 nd Obs Bob first lead end Bob second lead end 2 3 rd Obs 3 5 th Obs Bob third lead end Bob fourth lead end Shorter Touches Calling 3 Bobs exactly 20 changes apart (2 leads) will give a shorter touch of 60 unique changes: The Bobs can be called starting either at the first or second lead ends, making either the 4 th or 5 th bells make the Bob 3 times. These touches can be written out in Lead Head format as: B B B Makes Bob 4 Makes Bob 4 Makes Bob B B B Makes Bob 5 Makes Bob 5 Makes Bob Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 4 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
The Single Yes Singles DO exist for Plain Bob Doubles but they are rarely rung as calling just 3 Bobs is quite sufficient to ring a full extent of the method. Theoretically many Methods do need Bobs and Singles to be able ring a full extent of changes. So why ring Singles to Plain Bob Doubles at all? For fun really! But DO check the band know what the correct Singles are before calling one, as Singles in Plain Bob Doubles are not the same as Singles in Plain Bob Minor. At the lead end a Plain course lead end looks like this: If a Single is called the lead end work changes to look like this: SINGLE called Affects Just as with the Bob above, the Single is called a whole pull before it takes effect. Comparing the two Grids above we can see that: Place Bell Pass Treble Due to do 2 nd 4 5 Dodge 3-4 down Do instead Make 3rds & hunt to back* New Place Bell Do next 3 rd Make 2nds 4 th 3 4 Long 5ths 4 th Long 5ths 5 th 2 3 Dodge 3-4 up 5 th Dodge 3-4 up 3 rd 1 2 Make 2nds Make 2nds (unaffected) 2 nd Dodge 3-4 down * The work, Make 3rds & hunt to back, is sometimes known as Making the Single : Calling Singles Calling 3 Singles exactly 40 changes apart will also give 120 unique changes just as with Bobs: the Singles can be called starting at the first, second, third or fourth lead ends. Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 5 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
The unaffected or Observation bell will be different of course. 1 st Single called at Bell Unaffected at each call 1 st Lead 3 2 nd Lead 5 3 rd Lead 4 4 th Lead 2 Thus to call a simple touch from the Observation bell the Conductor can call Single just as they finish their lead before making 2nds; calling 3 Singles in this way will return the bells to Rounds after 120 changes just as their bell reaches their home position once more. Shorter touches of just 60 changes can be called alternate lead ends just as with Bobs: If Single called first, third, fifth lead ends, then the 2nd will make the Single each time If Single called second, fourth, sixth lead ends, then the 3rd will make the Single each time And finally : the fun really starts when you mix both Bobs and Singles in a touch Thus, for example, the 4 th can call themselves as observation by calling: A Bob every time they come to Long 5ths A Single every time they come to 2nds That 120 should keep the band on their toes and get you some admiring looks too! Go and have Fun with Plain Bob Doubles! Alistair Donaldson 2009 Page 6 Plain Bob Doubles Touches (Students) v1.2.doc
