USC MEN'S VOLLEYBALL 4 NCAA Championships 11 Final Fours 12 Olympians 19 All-Americans 4 College Players of the Year FOR RELEASE: March 19, 2007 USC MEN'S VOLLEYBALL GOES TO LONG BEACH STATE THE FACTS The No. 13-ranked USC men s volleyball team (9-11 overall, 6-9 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation)--which has won 6 of its last 9 matches, including the past 3-- travels to No. 8 Long Beach State (11-9, 6-8) for an MPSF match this Thursday (March 22) at 7:30 p.m. ON THE INTERNET All of USC s home matches are video-, audio- and data-streamed over the internet on RANKINGS USC is 13th in the current CSTV/AVCA poll. Long Beach State is eighth. OPPONENTS USC holds a lead in its series with Long Beach State, including a 3-1 win this past January to snap a 13-match losing streak to the 49ers. LAST MATCHES Juan Figueroa had 10 kills, 7 digs and 6 aces, while C.J. Schellenberg added 10 kills and 5 blocks to lead No. 13 USC to a 35-33, 30-20, non-conference win over Rutgers-Newark on March 13 in USC s Galen Center. USC has never lost to the Scarlet Raiders in 8 meetings. Hunter Current added 9 kills and 4 blocks for the Trojans, while teammate Luke Morris had 10 digs. USC scored the last 2 points of the tightly-contested first game on a serving error and a combo block by Current and Matt Pavlovich. The Trojans opened up a lead in the second game and were never threatened while serving 7 aces. In the final game, USC steadily battled back from an early 10-5 deficit and opened up a lead en route to the victory. On March 16, Schellenberg had 13 kills and Figueroa added 10 kills to lead USC to a 30-24, 30-15, win at UC San Diego in a MPSF match. USC outhit the Tritons,.450 to.067, and dominated the net by getting 19.5 blocks to UCSD s 2.5. Schellenberg hit.500 and added 4 blocks, while Figueroa hit at a.471 clip and had 6 blocks. Andrew Vernon had a match-best 8 blocks, and both Current and Pavlovich had 6 blocks. Jimmy Killian returned to the lineup after taking 2 matches off with an ankle sprain and dished out 38 assists. GALEN CENTER The USC men's volleyball team has a new on-campus home in 2007, the stateof-the-art Galen Center. The 10,258-seat arena with adjacent practice courts, locker rooms, weight room and coaches offices is a dramatic upgrade from the old, cramped North Gym and the multi-purpose Lyon Center. The Galen Center also serves as home to USC women's volleyball and men's and women's basketball, as well as serving as a venue for concerts and other campus and community events. RETURNERS Five starters and the libero (and 11 lettermen) returned from last year's USC team. Troy s 22-man roster, its largest ever, also features a number of other returning players, along with 7 newcomers (including 6 freshmen) who joined the Trojans to form one of the nation s top recruiting classes. In 2006, the Trojans went just overall (7-15 in the MPSF), but did post upset wins over NCAA Championship finalists UCLA and Penn State. However, Troy failed for the fifth consecutive year to finish in the top 8 of the 12-team MPSF and qualify for the league tourney. VOLLEYBALL SCHOOL Besides the 4 NCAA crowns ( ) that USC s men have won, the Women of Troy have captured 6 national volleyball titles. USC s women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and 1980, and the NCAA crown in Then, coach Mick Haley s 2002 and 2003 Women of Troy squads captured the NCAA titles.

2 COACH BILL FERGUSON Bill Ferguson, one of the game's top young coaches, was promoted to head coach of the USC men's volleyball program in the spring of The 36-year-old Ferguson was an assistant at USC in 2006, when he also served as Troy's recruiting coordinator and offensive coordinator in addition to coaching the setters under head coach Turhan Douglas. This is Ferguson s second stint at USC, as he was an assistant for 2 years ( ) under head coach Pat Powers. He was one of the nation s most successful junior volleyball coaches and club directors before returning to USC in the summer of In his 15 years of coaching experience at the club level (Santa Monica Beach Club, Reebok Palisades Club, Los Angeles Athletic Club and Southern California Volleyball Club), he coached teams to 19 medals (including 12 golds) at national championships and the clubs he directed won 31 medals. Among the players he has coached over the years are Olympians Misty May, Brook Billings, Donald Suxho, Gabe Gardner, Jeff Nygaard, Ryan Millar, Brett Winslow and Mark Williams, as well as Brandon Taliaferro and current USC setters Jimmy Killian and Hunter Haley. He served as an assistant with the USA Youth National Team in 2000 and In the summer of 2006, he was the head coach of the 2006 USA Volleyball Men s Junior National A2 team. Ferguson played for Palisades High in Pacific Palisades (Calif.), where he was a member of the 1988 L.A. City championship team. He then took a 2-year hiatus from volleyball. While enrolled at Santa Monica (Calif.) College, he pursued a competitive surfing career. From 1987 to 1991, he was a familiar face on the Southern California collegiate volleyball scene, where he served as a linesman for men s and women s matches. ASSISTANT COACHES Not only is Bill Ferguson making his head coaching debut, but USC will sport 3 new assistant coaches with notable resumes: John Hawks, Brad Keller, Blake Robinson. The staff s only familiar face is Brandon Crisp, now in his fourth year at USC. He serves as the program s technical coordinator. Hawks spent the past 4 years as an assistant at UC Irvine, helping the Anteaters to a historic 2006 campaign when they won their first MPSF title and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. He also won gold medals while coaching the prestigious Balboa Bay Volleyball Club for 9 years. For the past 5 seasons, Keller ran the Bay To Bay Volleyball Club, a highly-regarded program in Northern California. Robinson was an assistant with the Carnegie Mellon women s team this past season. KILLIAN Co-captain Jimmy Killian, a 6-4 junior, is back at setter after starting the last 2 seasons. He has 3,146 career assists (1,300 in 2006). Haley, the son of USC women s volleyball head coach Mick Haley, and Biernat have yet to play in a regular-season match.

FIGUEROA USC returns one of the nation s most dynamic outside hitters in springy 6-2 junior Juan Figueroa, who started the last 2 years. He led USC in kills (477) in 2006 and was third in digs (172) and aces (15) while adding 67 blocks. Entering 2007, Anderson had appeared in only 11 matches in his career, primarily as a serving specialist, but he caught the coaches attention with his play during fall drills. Pavlovich saw action in 7 matches as a freshman last year, even starting the season s first 2 matches. A pair of freshmen who were prep teammates at 2006 CIF 2007 USC Men s Volleyball Page 3 Division I runner-up Redondo Union High in Redondo Beach (Calif.), 6-4 Joey Dykstra and 6-3 Chris Roche, also will battle for the opening at outside hitter. Dykstra, a 2006 All-American first team honoree, was a 2- time ( ) All-CIF Division I first teamer. He also is one of the planet s top young beach volleyball players, taking silver medals at the 2005 Junior World U19, 2005 AAU Boys Junior U19 and 2006 U.S. Junior Olympics U20 Beach Championships. Roche started in the middle for the Seahawks last season. Then there s 6-5 freshman outside hitter Brendan Skinner. He won 2006 All-CIF Division IV first team honors at Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village (Calif.). VERNON Andrew Vernon, a 6-8 junior, returns after starting at middle blocker the previous 2 seasons. Vernon, who appears to have recovered from lingering knee injuries, led the Trojans in hitting percentage (.403) in 2006 and was third in blocks (85). 4 OTHER MIDDLES Hunter Current, a 6-8 freshman who was a 2006 All-American honorable mention pick at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose (Calif.), has emerged as a starter at middle blocker. He was a member of the 2006 USA Men s Junior National team. He took over early in the 2007 season for 2006 starter Matt Mosko, a 6-7 senior. Mosko moved back to the middle last year after spending 2005 as an opposite hitter and led USC in blocks (124) and was second in hitting percentage (.356) in He also had 179 kills, 14 aces and 29 digs last season. Chris Jones, a 6-6 junior, and untested 6-5 sophomore Sean O Connor also are in the mix at middle blocker. Jones played in 17 matches last spring, with 10 starts (mostly late in the year). He had 43 kills, 35 blocks and 9 digs in O Connor has yet to see action at USC. Matt Hillier, a gutty 6-3 sophomore middle blocker who was a teammate of Killian and Schellenberg at prep powerhouse Loyola High in Los Angeles (Calif.), transferred to USC from Pasadena (Calif.) City College.
