Small scale features Sea Breeze Occur during the summer months. Temperature differences between the sea and the land form pressure differences, and a wind to develop. Heathrow is within the inland extent of sea breezes. Can cause the wind to become S rly or SE rly.
Small scale features Sea Breeze
Small scale features Showers / Thunderstorms Showers cause down droughts, that alter the wind direction around them. Slow moving showers can cause long changes in a wind direction that may cause a runway change Recent case study from 10 th of July Showers caused a sudden runway change
A large CB caused weather avoidance on approach and downdroughts flicked the E ly wind to W ly 8-12 KT CB developed in 30 minutes just to west of Windsor Moving away NNE very slowly
Small scale features Katabatic Winds Overnight, high ground generally cools quicker than lower ground. Cold air is dense, and flows down hills. Heathrow is located SE of the Chilterns. Heathrow can get NW rly winds when not expected. These winds normally disappear 1-2 hours after sunrise.
Small scale features Katabatic Winds Cold air drains from the Chilterns, temporarily bringing NW rly surface winds to Heathrow
Wind Forecasting Forecast products for planning and tactical decision making Onsite equipment for wind monitoring Aircraft demand for 5 KT or less tailwind.
