8 Concession Stand & Press Box Posting: TORNADO PREPAREDNESS PLEASE REVIEW THIS LIST OF PROCEDURES Get ready during calm weather: Discuss designated shelter areas and the hazards of not using them. Keep an ear open for the weather report and an eye on the sky. Know which television or radio stations provide frequent weather updates. Plan your response to threatening weather. If weather conditions are prevailing, discuss strategy prior to shift startup or update the plan when appropriate. Remember these terms: Tornado Watch: Weather conditions favor the development of tornadoes. Tornado Warning: Tornado sighted or observed on radar. Take shelter! Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe thunderstorms are possible. Take these steps if a warning is issued or Threatening weather approaches: 8
9 In a building, move to a designated shelter area. If you are unable to move to a designated shelter area. Put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. Stay away from windows. If a tornado strikes wait for the storm to pass and be aware that another storm may be in the vicinity. Tornado s can develop in areas where a severe thunderstorm watch or warning is in effect. They can develop so quickly that advance warning may not be possible. Remain alert to signs of an approaching tornado and take shelter if threatening conditions exist. If you re not sure, play it safe. Take shelter! 9

11 Miscellaneous - Buying an Aluminum Bat One of the most important factors in a young player's enjoyment of the game is his (or her) success at the plate. Besides proper training in the art and science of hitting a baseball, the aluminum baseball bat itself plays a big role. Too many well-meaning but uninformed parents buy their kid a bat that is the wrong length or weight, or both. This adds yet another obstacle to the budding player's efforts to succeed. As a rule of thumb, we suggest the lightest aluminum baseball bat of a given length that you can afford. The high-tech alloys in the lightest bats cost the most, while inexpensive bats made from cheaper aluminum - which requires thicker walls for strength - are heavier. Youth 8-10 Years Old Player Height Best Bat Weight 48 in. 16 oz. 50 in oz. 52 in. 17 oz. 54 in oz. 56 in. 18 oz. 58 in oz. 60 in. 19 oz. Formula = (Height/4) + 4 Youth Years Old Player Weight Best Bat Weight 70 lbs. 18 oz. 80 lbs. 19 oz. 90 lbs oz. 100 lbs. 20 oz. 110 lbs oz. 120 lbs. 21 oz. 130 lbs oz. 140 lbs. 22 oz. 150 lbs. 23 oz. Formula = (Weight/18) + 14 Chart Courtesy of Worth Inc. When shopping for an aluminum baseball bat, have your child hold it out to his side with the top hand (right hand for right-handed batter). If he cannot hold it straight out for 20 seconds or so without the arm starting to shake and the bat dropping, it's too heavy. More resources for parents, coaches and umpires posted at 11
