2 PAGE 2 V OLUME 24 ISSUE 3 FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT I consider it a true honor to serve as the first ARSBA president from Ohio. This is especially true since the association s first president, elected in 1889, came from our rival state of Michigan. He was Captain Henry Grinnell whose whaling ship experiences ranged from the Bering Sea to Middle East. I would like to offer a little background about the sheep portion of our operation. We have a small flock in western Ohio with our target markets being both range rams and futurity ewe lambs. Although I consider our state fair showing days to be behind us, we still enjoy participating in the major sales. I love to talk Rambouillet sheep and would be happy to visit with any of you as your schedules permit. I would like to conclude my remarks by offering a sincere thank you to Scott Crawford for his ARSBA service as my predecessor. It was a pleasure serving with him. 3 VOLUME 24 ISSUE 3 Secretary s Notes Robbie G. Eckhoff Greetings from the office of the ARSBA! Wow, here we are already in September, with fall and winter quickly approaching is zooming by and 2018 is just around the corner. First and foremost, we need to take an opportunity to congratulate our new leadership of the Association. Mr. Woody Joslin of Maplewood, Ohio has assumed the President position of the ARSBA for a two year term. Mr. Russell Kott of Junction, Texas is now your Vice President. Both of these gentlemen have jumped right in and are working hard for you, the membership of the ARSBA. They have numerous items that are being looked at from a committee and board perspective, and they are excited about the future of the ARSBA and its membership. Next, we need to send a huge thank you out to our hosts in Gillette for putting on a nice show and sale week. The Ketterling Family put a tremendous amount of work into the week and we thank them for all of their hard work for the association. For any of you that have worked to put a show and sale on, you know it is not an easy job to make everything fall into place for the week. The 2018 version of the National Rambouillet Show & Sale will be in Levelland, Texas July 2-7, More information will follow in the December newsletter. We had a really successful week in Gillette, with the National Sale results reflecting the hard work of both the producers and buyers. The National Junior Show was once again an extremely nice show, with an outstanding Yearling Ewe class. We need to take an opportunity to thank Mr. Andrew Schafer of Delores, Colorado for judging the National Junior Show. In addition, a big thank you goes out to Justin Benz for all he does with the futurity program and keeping up with the results and points that everyone has accumulated throughout the show season. PAGE 3 In reviewing the meetings from Friday morning in Gillette, you will see the most important aspect on the front cover of this issue of the Bouilletin. Other items included the notification to the ram test managers that only Rambouillet Rams registered with the American Rambouillet Sheep Breeders Association are eligible for the Registry of Merit and Certification program within the ARSBA. The ARSBA now has approximately 20 breeders in NSIP with 15 submitting data and around 7000 head of sheep both registered and non registered in NSIP and collecting data on those individuals. The age limit for the National Junior Rambouillet Show has been extended. The age will increase to 21 years of age as of January 1 of the show year. As long as a junior is not older than 21 on January 1st they will be able to show in that years National Junior Rambouillet Show. In 2018, at the National Rambouillet Show & Sale, there will be a non show class for each current class, with those animals not showing selling after the show class. They will sell by random draw. This item was passed with older and/or less experienced consignors in mind, which allows them to participate and sell animals without having to show them. However, it is noted that the priority for each age division is the show class. The ARSBA decided to provide a $750 donation to the All American Junior Show in order to get the Rambouillet Breed back into the All American Show. The Board of Directors passed a motion to set up an advertising fund and committee for the promotion and advertising of the ARSBA and the Rambouillet breed with a chairman to oversee the committee and make decisions concerning advertising, promotion, breed directory, etc. Jody Ketterling has volunteered to serve as chairman of this committee. The Board of Directors voted to allocate $5000 to use in the promotion of the breed going forward. The Board of Directors voted in closed session to give the secretary a $300 per month raise. In order for you to have your entries in the 2018 National Show & Sale catalog, they must be in my hands by May 1, NO EXCEPTIONS! As time goes on we are getting more tardy in getting those entries in, and we need to get those catalogs done and out to our prospective buyers, and that date is what works best to meet our goals. In closing, I want to thank all of you for your continued support and dedication. Many of us have different goals in mind, but remember, to have success, WE MUST WORK AS A TEAM! I encourage all of you to work hard in continuing to promote and produce REGISTERED RAMBOUILLET SHEEP!

11 VOLUME 24 ISSUE 3 PAGE NATIONAL CHAMPION RAM & EWE BOTH EXHIBITED BY DEW DROP FARMS, THE BAUCK FAMILY, NEW YORK MILLS, MN With Deepest Sympathies Longtime Rambouillet breeder and former ARSBA Director and President Mr. Murl Patrick of White, South Dakota passed away on June 21, Murl was born on February 27, 1932 during a snowstorm. His father harnessed up a team and drove three miles to telephone for a doctor in Hendricks, MN. He waited for the doctor to get to the neighbor s place, then they traveled by way of a team of horses and a bobsled so that the doctor could deliver Murl. In 1951, Murl bought his first shearing machine and got a job for a neighbor who had 20 head of Hampshire sheep. In 1953 he was shearing lambs in Hurley, SD when he came across Rambouillets with beautiful fleeces. During his time raising Rambouillet sheep, Murl and his family sold sheep into Canada, Mexico, South American, India and just about every state in the US. (info courtesy of the ARSBA History Book)
