LOOKING TO MAKE THEIR MOVE In the past few years, the Minutewomen have fared well since returning from its final trip to Florida. Including this year, UMass is (.908) overall since the 1999 season after playing their final tournament in Florida. Here is a look at the past six seasons. 1999: 6-2 at Florida State Invitational won 35 of next 37 games 2000: 4-2 at Florida State Invitational won 26 of next 31 games 2001: 3-2 at Speedline Invitational won 24 in a row and 37 of next 39 games 2002: 5-3 at FIU Blue & Gold Classic won 33 in a row and 38 of next 39 games 2003: 2-2 at FIU Blue & Gold Classic won 14 in a row and 27 of next 31 games 2004: 3-2 at FIU Blue & Gold Classic won 13 in a row and 24 of next 26 games 2005: 4-2 at Speedline Invitational so far since then HOME FIELD DOMINANCE While Massachusetts saw its 73 game home winning streak come to an end in last year s A-10 Tournament, the Minutewomen are still (.940) alltime at the UMass Softball Complex and have a 74-game unbeaten regular season home winning streak. On March 31, 2005, UMass and Dartmouth tied 2-2. The game was called after seven innings due ti darkness. The Minutewomen are 43-2 against league foes at the UMass Softball Complex. Here is a statistical breakdown of how the Minutewomen have fared alltime at the UMass Softball Complex. LaFogg was perfect for six and twothirds innings before the 21st batter, Kelly Fry, hit a double off the centerfield wall. There have been eight perfect games all-time in UMass history. The freshman outfielder is hitting.417 (15-36) with two doubles, six RBI and two stolen bases in those 12 games. Proctor had a career-high three hits, including her first double, March 19 against Villanova. TWO OUTS NO PROBLEM So Far in 2005, Massachusetts is proving to be a very clutch two-out team. Of the 83 runs that the Minutewomen have scored, 55 (66 percent) of them have come after there were two outs in the inning. More impressively, 38 of those runs have occurred in an inning which started with two outs and nobody on base. KJ Kelley leads the team with 12 twoout RBI and a.500 (12-24) batting average with two down. Lauren Proctor is also hitting.391 (9-23) while Pam Sulick has a.389 (7-18) average with two down. DENIS SWING IS BACK Denise Denis demonstrated last month in Boca Raton, Fla., what UMass fans became accustomed to last year streak hitting. The Middle Grove, N.Y., native broke out of a slump against Bethune Cookman on March 6 with a RBI triple and has been on fire since then. In the 16 games since then, Denis is hitting.356 (16-45) with three doubles, a triple, four home runs, 20 RBI and eight runs scored. That all equates to a.733 slugging percentage. Denis has three, three-hit games this year and six game-winning RBI. She also had six multi-rbi games. Denis set career-highs with two home runs and five RBI in game one of a doubleheader March 26 at Dayton. For the season, Denis is fifth on the team hitting.386. She leads the team and is second in the A-10 with 20 RBI and is tied for the lead with her four home runs. KELLEY CLOSING IN Junior catcher KJ Kelley is now just one home run away from tying the school record of 26 which is held by Scooter Wheeler and Brandi Cross. Kelley, who hit a single-season record 13 long balls last year, has a team-high four home runs this year to move within one of the record. ROLLER COASTER LAFOGG Senior pitcher Barb LaFogg has had quite a roller coaster ride in her starts this year. The Williamsburg, Mass., native is currently 8-7 with a 2.65 ERA. In her eight wins, LaFogg has a 0.86 ERA. She has allowed just six earned runs on 26 hits and 12 walks in 49.0 innings. LaFogg has also struck out 75 batters in those games (1.53 K s/inning). In losses, however, LaFogg has a 5.10 ERA. She has given up 26 earned runs on 44 hits and 16 walks in 35.2 innings. She has 18 strikeouts in those games (0.50 K s/inning). SOLID START FOR PROCTOR Freshman Lauren Proctor has had a very solid start in a Minutewoman uniform. The Redmond, Wash., native has started in all 23 games and leads the team in batting at.349. Proctor, who is currently riding a 12-game hitting streak, also has eight runs scored, two doubles, nine RBI, five walks and three stolen bases. Proctor s average is currently seventh in the A-10. A-10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR BACK IN FORM 2004 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and honorable mention Easton All-American Hilary Puglia has picked up right where she left at the end of last season. Puglia is currently third on the team batting
4 .319. She leads the team with 18 runs scored and seven doubles and is also second with three home runs and third with 12 RBI. She has a.542 slugging percentage which currently ranks third. Puglia has also reached safely in 19 of the Minutewomen s 21 games this year, including the last 12 games. SOLID BACK-UP With KJ Kelley out nursing a sprained ankle, freshman Sarah Hurd was called upon to start behind the plate and performed better than anyone could have expected. The Warwick, R.I. native did not have a single miscue behind the plate while batting 2-for-5 in the process. She also scored a run and had a sacrifice. THE NEW BACKSTOP With the graduation of four-year starting catcher Jaime Cahalan, KJ Kelley h a s moved behind the plate and started 21 games there this season. She missed the Dayton series March 26 with a badly sprained ankle. Kelley is currently second on the team batting.321 with five doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI. She is also tops on the team with 11 walks and a.625 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, Kelley has picked off one baserunner and thrown out 29 percent (5-17) of would-be base stealers. HEAD COACH ELAINE SORTINO On December 4, 2004, Massachusetts head coach Elaine Sortino was be inducted into the NFCAHall of Fame. She became the 32nd member of this prestigious group. With a 4-0 win over La Salle in game one of a doubleheader on March 28, 2003, UMass head coach Elaine Sortino became the 16th coach in NCAA history, 13th in Division I, to reach the 800-win plateau. In 25-plus years at the helm of the Minutewomen, Sortino has compiled an (.693) record. She is 10th among active NCAA coaches in wins and 12th in winning percentage. Sortino has led UMass to 17 Atlantic 10 titles, 14 NCAA regional appearances and three trips to the College World Series. Sortino has been named the A-10 Coach of the Year seven times, the most of any coach in any sport in the league.
