1 BROOME COUNTY SPORTSMEN S ASSOCIATION Since 1919 Foley Road, Kirkwood, New York Jan. - Feb. - Mar Presidents Letter Another year is finished with the new year just started. I sincerely hope that all of you and yours had a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday as appropriate. I wish you all a Happy New Year, as well. A few words about targets on the outdoor ranges. There are targets provided for your use. Stones, rocks and broken cinder block are not appropriate targets, neither are structures at the side of the ranges. Some one persons think that the concrete forms on the sides of the range are targets, but they aren t. They cause ricochets and no one knows where they go. Placing targets on the silhouette berms or bases isn t appropriate either. The replacement costs of these items comes from your dues which are better spent on other things. These acts are done by a minority of members, but effects us all. One of the projects for this year is improvement of the shooting stations on the rifle range. this will curtail use of the rifle range for a period of time while the work is done and concrete sets up. John MEMBERSHIP We appreciate the continued support by our members and welcome many new members who have joined us this year. Right now, the total BCSA membership is close to 700. A SPECIAL NOTE TO OUR MEMBERS WHO ORDINARILY RECEIVE THE NEWSLET- TER IN THEIR INBOX OR VIEW IT ON LINE: You are receiving a printed copy of this newsletter because it is combined with the annual raffle mailing. SEE THE RAFFLE INSERT. The next edition of the newsletter will again come to you as you requested. As the year ends, we again like to thank the people who have donated their time or money to the club during the past year. We omit the names because often someone is inadvertently left out. However, special thanks must go to John Elms who along with his duties as president keeps the club grounds mowed and the equipment maintained from early spring to late fall year after year. WISHING EVERYONE A JOYOUS AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR, Irma Thrall, Memberships Attention - Rifle Range Safety Before anyone goes down range to attend targets All rifles are to be unloaded, magazines removed bolts open and placed in rifle rack Pistols - magazines out, slides back and placed on table. Safety and consideration for fellow members is every ones responsibility. Pistol Range The same goes for this range - Only.22 cal. rifle can be used on this range. Pistols - same - Loaded pistols are not to be carried down range when attending targets. BCSA wants every one to use safe handling of fire arms and have fun shooting. Proof of Membership must be carried when on B.C.S.A. property. Which shall be: a Club issued membership card clearly displayed by member on outer clothing above the waist at all times when on Club property.

2 2011 BCSA Newsletter Page 2 The NRA Junior Rifle instruction class Will be held over a six week period starting early in The classes will be held on Thursday nights between 7 and 9 PM sharp. The participants will learn the basics of firearm safety, position shooting and competition. Students will have to be 12 years of age when the classes begin and also be Junior members of BCSA ($5 membership). The club will supply the equipment and ammunition for all the shooting. Students will need to bring eye and ear protection to each class. Please contact Ken Gill at if you are interested. High Power Update The High Power league completed another very successful season with the last of 12 matches held at TCSA on September 24th. There were 23 League shooters along with several non league shooters who participated in some of the matches. Shooters competed by class in Iron Sight or Any Sight categories (Scope). The league required shooters to fire at least 6 matches in a category, plus at least one match at each club to be eligible for prizes. Class winners were: Scope: Iron: Master - Neal Sundberg Tom Scott Expert - Jocko LaClair Nathan Ellis Sharpshooter - Carl Criddle Marksman - Paul Corse Chris Esposito Plans are under way for firming up next year s schedule, which will be published in the next newsletter. The league is looking forward to even more High Power shooters in I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year, and keep shooting. Carl Criddle High Power Chairman Sporterifle News We ve just past the halfway mark of this years season. What a successful season at that. The shooters have been very cooperative with my Safety Rules. I ve still enough shooters for two teams every Tuesday. Practice on Sundays has been a plus for those who come. Sunday is a good time to give this sport, a try as it is too busy on a match night for me to give a new shooter my needed attention. Both teams BCSA#1 and BCSA#2 have climbed up in their respective spots in the NYS Sporterifle Leagues. A special thanks to those who run 50/50 raffles and clean up on those days. I m proud of the Broome County Sportsmens Association s ability to have this type event. I d like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you for keeping the indoor range up and running for us and in the excellent shape that it is in. Shoot often and shoot safe, Captain Ron.. Attention InDoor Range Members NO handeling of fire arms in ready-room - Only at bench area in shooting area!!!!! When placing targets down range. Targets are not to be so close that you can not see at least 2 feet of the back stop under the target. This is to prevent bullets from hitting the floor and metal skirt, and Ricochet up thru the ceiling and the roof. If you see other shooters doing this - please point out this incorrect placement and help maintain safety of the range.

3 2012 Broome County Sportsmen s Ass n Inc. Building Fund Raffle Fellow Member, We have changed the way we are doing the annual club Building Fund Raffle. There are st now $1, in prizes. The drawing date has been moved up to March 21. To save mailing costs included it in the first newsletter of the year. Putting that money into the grand prize. The money raised from the 2011 raffle helped fund several projects at the club last year. The indoor range got a new sidewalk with guard rail, the pistol range/falling plate area firing line was improved with a new concrete pad. For 2012 the planned projects at the club are scheduled to start in May. First will be replacing the current crushed stone surface under the covered Rifle Range with a new concrete pad. This project alone is anticipated to cost over $ So the monies from the raffle will go to a good cause, YOU. With your help selling raffle tickets we are able to do needed improvements that benefit all and still keep club dues reasonable. Club dues are used to pay for the day to day operational expenses (taxes, insurance, utilities) of the Club. The middle sheet of this mailing has 20 tickets, please cut up and return with you check, as always either by mail or in person at the Clubhouse on meeting nights. If you want more tickets to sell you have several ways to go: 1- you may photocopy one of the ticket pages, one side is fine, both sides if you can. 2- Call , talk slow and leave your name and address including the zip code and I will mail more tickets to you. 3- me at PR_BCSA@verizon.net I will send you a JPEG or PDF file to print out. This year s seller of the grand prize winning ticket will receive their next years membership (at their current membership level) renewed for the membership year for free and will also receive a one year Guest Pass Membership for free. This does include Indoor Range Membership if you are a current indoor member as of the drawing date. To qualify seller must write their Membership Number (not the DCM No.) on the back of each ticket they sell. Thank you. Good Luck B.C.S.A. Raffle Chairmen Drawing to be held at the B.C.S.A. 10 2011 BCSA Newsletter Page 10 Rifle Range - This is unacceptable trash put up on rifle range by members. The club dose its best to maintain target backers. If you bring junk like this - take it home with you - we do not want it. If you do not have pride in the club range than do not shoot here. Thanks to Dave S. to take time from his own time and club expense to refurbish 8 new backers as they get shot up. Outdoor pistol range - This is also unacceptable - If you just throw the backers in the podium they will not be usable for the next person. Put them back neat and share with all. Help keep the range for all to enjoy. Indoor range - This was done by a careless shooter who did not have the honesty to report the damage so it could be fixed. A second set of lights were also shoot out at the same time. The targets are hung 3 ft. below the ceiling - This should not happen. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.

13 2011 BCSA Newsletter Page 13 RANGE MANNERS: during recent use of the rifle range during hunting season, I observed careless gun handling and violation of basic safety rules. I spoke up and tried to educate the persons involved, and all agreed with me that safety is important, and they were wrong. READ THE SIGNS-they are posted all over the range. The worst offense is handling guns while members are down range putting up targets. Rifles and shotguns should be unloaded, action open and in the rack while people are down range. If someone is down range when you arrive, you should use good range manners and wait for them to return to the firing line. When I turn around 100 yards out and see you handling your rifle it upsets me because : I don t know what condition your rifle is-loaded or unloaded, and I don t know if you are a competent person. Don t tell me the safety is on or I m just setting up. Don t point that thing at me again! Be careful getting your equipment out of your vehicle. One member swung a lever action rifle in an arc across the whole firing line with the action closed after he pulled it out from behind the seat of his truck. Was it loaded? Like I said, I don t know you or trust you, don t point that thing at me again. Always approach the range from your vehicle with the muzzle pointing at the sky, unless you are carrying it to the firing line in a proper case. Don t carry Davy Crockett style with it resting in the crook of your arm. When you turn to greet your shooting buddies you are pointing it at someone else. The worst offenders for some reason are from Pennsylvania or shotgun shooters. The PA guys always carry a rifle balanced in one hand below their waist, so when they turn they cover the whole range. Shotgun shooters like to hang it over their shoulder - or rest the muzzle on their foot. One more thing-if you feel the need to shoot trap with a hand operated clay bird thrower while the range is in use, step up to the firing line, don t stand on the concrete trap positions well behind everyone else and think it is OK- ALL FIRING SHOULD BE DONE FROM THE FIRING LINE!!! Only use the trap positions when the rest of the range is closed for a trap shoot. Club Member Please note that the BCSA Silhouette web site has migrated to the main BCSA server.
