Clarification on Repetitions of Difficult Variations According to ISU Communication 1611 and the ISU Technical Panel Handbook for Singles , a skater is not restricted in the number of attempts of a difficult variation in a program/or spin. A skater may repeat the same difficult variation in a program, but only the first one will be evaluated for a level feature. Repetitions of the same difficult variation may be considered by Judges for GOEs, and may be performed without penalty, but will not be considered as a feature for Levels. Additionally, a skater is not restricted from having more than one difficult variation on each in the combination spin with a change of (CCoSP). Example of how spins with repeats of the same difficult variation are evaluated in a FS Program: Spin 1, FSSP3: 1. Difficult Flying Entry - COUNTS FOR LEVEL 2. Sit Forward Difficult Variation (SF) - COUNTS FOR LEVEL (and further attempts of the same variation do not count for a level feature) 3. 8 Consecutive Revolutions in a Basic Position - COUNTS FOR LEVEL Spin 2, CSSP3: 1. Backward Entry Sit Spin - COUNTS FOR LEVEL 2. Sit Forward Difficult Variation (SF) - Does not count for level if the same attempt as Spin 1 (already attempted in Spin 1, therefore does not count for a level feature, only GOE) 3. 8 Consecutive Revolutions in a Basic Position - COUNTS FOR LEVEL Change feet 4. Sit Behind Difficult Variation (SB) COUNTS FOR LEVEL (and further attempts of the same variation do not count for a level feature) Spin 3, CCOSp4: 1. Camel for 8 Consecutive Revolutions in a Basic Position - COUNTS FOR LEVEL 2. Three Illusions (Intermediate Difficult Variation) COUNTS FOR LEVEL Change feet 3. Sit forward Difficult Variation (SF) - Does not count for level if the same attempt as Spin 1 (already attempted in Spin 1, therefore does not count for a level feature, only GOE) 4. 8 Revolutions in a Basic Position - COUNTS FOR LEVEL 5. Upright Straight Difficult Variation (US) - COUNTS FOR LEVEL (first attempt at this Difficult Variation type) Please Note: Attempts at IJS Levels of Difficulty features are only awarded if fully completed correctly, in accordance to ISU and US Figure Skating rules. Page 5 of 17
Pairs - Solo Spins Solo Spin or Solo Spin Combination Less than 2 continuous revolutions in a basic position by both partners (at the same time, in the same basic position) Spin must have at least 2 continuous revolutions in a basic position by both partners (at the same time, in the same basic position). No Level Solo Spin Combination with a change of Less than 2 continuous revolutions in a basic position on only one (other is achieved) by both partners at the same time, and in a corresponding basic position Spin must have at least 2 continuous revolutions in a basic position by both partners (at the same time, in some basic position simultaneously on the same ) to achieve Levels 2, 3, and 4 Not higher than Level 1 Page 6 of 17
Pairs - Pivot Figures and Death Spirals Pivot Figure Death Spiral 2 Hand Hold Pivot Figure and/or Death Spiral must be with the regular one-hand to one-hand hold No Level Pivot Figure Death Spiral Less than ½ revolution by both partners with the man in a pivot position and knees clearly bent When the Pivot Figure and/or Death Spiral position is attained, both partners must execute a minimum of ½ revolution with the man in pivot position (both knees clearly bent) No Level Page 7 of 17
Pairs - Lifts All Lifts Two take-off All lifts should take off on one. If not, this falls under a GOE deduction Award Feature All Lifts Second lift from the same group has the same take-off If from the same group, each lift must have a different take-off (for example, one star and one platter, both from Group 3). For Group 1 Lifts, Toe/Flip/Lutz take-offs are all considered the same. Any other Group 1 Lift take off is considered different (for example, Axel take-off). No Level All Lifts Less than 1 revolution by the lady and / or ½ revolution by the man All lifts must have a minimum of one (1) revolution by the lady, and a minimum of one-half ( ½) and maximum of three and one-half (3 ½) revolutions by the man No Level All Lifts Man executes more than 3 ½ revolutions, although the team has completed the correct lift requirements for at least a "Level 1" prior to the illegality (and there was also proper positioning as the lift passed the man's shoulders) All lifts must have a minimum of one (1) revolution by the lady, and a minimum of one-half ( ½) and maximum of three and one-half (3 ½) revolutions by the man Level 1 and also the illegal element deduction will be applied Page 8 of 17
Group 2 Lifts Less than full extension of both arms by the man Full extension is optional, but the man must have full extension of both arms to receive higher than Level 1 Not Higher than Level 1 Group 1 Lift Release of the lady s arm from the man s shoulder during a Group 1 lift Release of the lady s arm from the man s shoulder during a lift is not a feature. This is considered a simple variation of the lift, which is allowed. No features awarded All Lifts Lift with a carry A carry lift is only in Junior and Senior Pairs No Level All Lifts Lifts with the man in a Spread Eagle during the take off Per the ISU Requirement, if a man is in a Spread Eagle position during the take-off of a lift, the lift rotation is counted from the leading. In a lift that takes off in a Spread Eagle and then turns to backwards for the rotation, the lift has already rotated ½ revolution as long as the rotation of the lift is in the direction of back leg of the Spread Eagle toward the front leg of the Spread Eagle. Award Difficult Take-Off Feature Page 9 of 17
Pairs Twist Lifts Twist Lifts Break in steps preceding the twist Same as Junior and Senior ISU Rules, the feature is awarded only when steps / skating moves are by both partners immediately preceding the take-off, with rhythm maintained throughout Difficult takeoff feature not awarded Twist Lifts Only a small dance lift immediately preceding the Twist Lift Same as Junior and Senior ISU Rules, a small dance lift immediately preceding the Twist Lift is considered a difficult entry only if there are steps immediately preceding the dance lift, with rhythm maintained throughout Difficult take-off feature not awarded Page 10 of 17
Dance Free Dance Synchronized Twizzle Synchronized Twizzle as a spin or as checked threeturns Twizzle turns to be correctly. Calling specifications of ISU Communication 1331 are utilized. If up to 1 rotation becomes a spin or checked three-turns, the Synchronized Twizzles will be reduced by one Level.
