Check us out on Life Saver s Motto. Vigilance & Service From the President. Firstly, thanks to all our volunteers who have helped out at recent fund-raisers, nipper days and other general events like the Expo. Thanks also to our patrolling members who keep our beach available for club and community. The season is well along the track and with the recent rains the boxies have arrived in numbers. While this puts a dampener on water activities for the nippers it does help focus us on the beach action including flags, sprints, R&R. With the States just around the corner I wish all our competitors well on the journey to producing your best against the best. Thanks to our back office team who have arranged uniforms and the likes for our team members. I m sure we ll again stand out in the crowd both through our actions and our uniforms. There are a few significant items in varying stages of action and the plans for the 1st Aid Room are progressing so we are positioned when the next round of grants come in. Similarly we are moving along with action up at the shed (i.e. road closure & possible shed extension) so keep your eyes open for this soon. We are also seeking support from Council in regards to reinstating the rock wall in front of the club house. I m thinking we ll need a working bee or two depending on what we can access, etc... If you know anyone who can access about 20 truck loads of big rock and or similar let us know. There is a busy month or two ahead and I ask everyone to help out where and when they can. Thanks in anticipation. Bill Lansbury IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE NIPPERS DAYS & EIMEO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Please note the Nippers dates for March in the left hand column. The Nippers Break-up will be held on Sunday, 30 March, following the EIMEO CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS. Times will be confirmed by . A big thank you to Marlin s Swim School for their generous donation of $500 to help purchase uniforms for the club s Junior and Senior State Teams going to North Kirra. Please remember that Marlin s Swim School is offering Adult Learn to Swim lessons for anyone who missed the opportunity as a child to learn to swim. Private or class (limited to 4 persons per class) lessons. Phone Thank you to GENESIS CLEANING at Paget for supplying the Club with the preserving liquid to start our collection of marine stingers.
2 From the JAC... It s been a pretty dry run at Nippers this summer with the beach being closed several times on a Saturday arvo due to stingers. However this has not deterred the kids (and mums and dads) from turning up and getting into some serious beach activities. Great to see some dads having a run with the 8 s, 9 s and 10 s (... and just staying in front too I might add). With the beach open last Saturday and the kids getting their first chance in 3 weeks to get wet, it is fair to say most of the 2 hours of nippers was spent in the water. I encourage all parents to do the simple water safety competency so you can get more involved with your kids and to ensure that ALL the kids can go into the water. If we don t have enough water safety personnel then not all the kids can get in the water. A group of 17 juniors 11 s 14 s enjoyed their first club camp sleepover 2 weekends ago at the clubhouse. After Nipper training it was feed time, game time, movie time, then bed time (albeit a short one). This was followed in the morning with a light snack, a 2.5 km run, a 2 hour swim/board training session then topped off with a big breakfast. Thanks to those parents who also camped the night on the floor as well as those who came down Sunday morning to cook the delicious bacon and egg breakfast. All the best to those juniors travelling down to Kirra for the Qld State Titles. We re proud of you and know you ll represent in the best way possible when in competition mode and out of it. Alan Zamp Eimeo Junior State Championship Team Good luck to the following Nippers who are going to North Kirra on the Gold Coast next week to compete at QLD Junior State Championships : Lulu Piperone Simba Walz Dane Robertson Brianna Baker Kelsey Larsen Meg Harris Cydney Robertson Jenna Lansbury Finn Zamparutti Isabella Harris Saffron Jones Leo Walz Daniel Moran Chloe Brant Tyler Haynes Monique Fettell We wish them all well and know they ll do us proud GO EIMEO..
3 R&R Weekend in Townsville The weekend of 8&9 February, the Eimeo R&R teams and coaches travelled to Townsville for an R&R clinic. We all had to be at Julie's by 4:45, ready to leave by 5:00 (AM that is!). Two hours later, a quick breakfast stop, listening to Jenna and Kelsey rave on about how amazing Chiko rolls are and Anja's angelic singing we arrived at Picnic Bay surf club at 9:30. After an intense 3 hour training session, where three Picnic Bay coaches picked up every small detail we were doing incorrectly, and taught us how to improve our ways, we finally went to go to our "villa" for some more R&R (rest and relaxation). After we all shotgunned our beds, we had some lunch and thought we better go try out the pool. Then it was back down to the beach to join in Picnic Bay's nipper program. It was a lot different from Eimeo as we had to do our swimming inside the stinger enclosure. We chatted with the people in our age groups and made some new friends. As Coach Julie explained to us that she was a coach not a cook, we all enjoyed hot chips and sausages from the surf club for dinner, much like our barbecue at Eimeo. But that didn't stop Julie from bribing us to do well with Gelato, which we enjoyed later that night. Travelling back to the villa, we had a quick dip in the pool and got ready for bed, drinking a cup of tea and watching a movie (don't worry Kristine, we didn't give Monique coffee!). Back up at 6:45 the next morning for our next training session at 7:30-9:30. George, a very skilled R&R coach from Picnic Bay, helped us brush up on our skills and made sure we had great self-discipline as well as telling us a million times that sand doesn't hurt you. Then it was on the road again to get back to Mackay for Julie's first game of basketball and Chloe's netball training. It was a long drive but hey it gave us time to write this and talk about the weekend. A big thank you to Picnic Bay and all the coaches and teams involved, as well as Eimeo Surf Life Saving Club for enabling us to go on this trip. We highly recommend any kids to join R&R as it is heaps of fun and helps you learn heaps more about Surf Life Saving. Thank you from Chloe, Monique, Jenna, Kelsey, Julie (coach) and Anja (Assistant Coach) Congratulations to our new Bronze Members and Surf Rescue Certificate holders. Hamish McDuff, Darcy van der Drift, Stacey Robertson, Keryn Brant and Isabella Harris gave up their time to obtain their surf awards. Well done, looking forward to seeing you on the beach in your red and yellow. Trainers Becoming a surf life saver is fun, rewarding & you may also help save someone`s life one day. No matter what your motivation for becoming a life saver is, there will always be a personally satisfying challenge ahead. Apart from the benefits of health, fitness, friendship, competition, knowledge, leadership and being able to put something back into the community, there are always lifesaving awards to be gained, with the majority of these awards now nationally recognised. Surf life savers start young with Active Cadets (13 to 15 years. SRC), Active Juniors (15 to 18 years. Bronze Medallion.) And Active Seniors (18 and over). The cadets receive on the job training while on patrol, and the juniors are involved in all areas of life saving and are required to perform patrol duties. All life savers are encouraged to gain extra awards to improve their skills. Parents often decide to also complete their awards. This gives them an opportunity (or avenue) to spend some time with their child with a similar interest, whilst learning new skills, gaining fitness and meeting new people. To assist members in gaining these awards, as many of you work away and/or are on a rolling roster, we are going to try a new training plan. Each nipper s day, 1 module of the Cert II in Aquatic Rescue and Public Safety, also known as the Bronze Medallion, will be taught in the clubhouse training room (upstairs)*. You will be marked off for each module you have completed. Once you have completed all the modules and your pool swim you will be assessed on your new skills. And then congratulations, you are now a life saver. If you have any questions about this process, please come and talk to me at nippers. Thanks Julie
