4 BASIC SAFETY RULES 1. NEVER POINT A FIREARM AT SOMETHING THAT IS NOT SAFE TO SHOOT. 1. Never et the muzze of a firearm point at any part of your body or at another person. This is especiay important when oading or unoading the firearm. When you are shooting at a target, know what is behind it. Some buets can trave over a mie. If you miss your target or if the buet penetrates the target, it is your responsibiity to ensure that the shot does not cause unintended injury or damage. 3. STORE YOUR FIREARM SO THAT CHILDREN CANNOT GAIN ACCESS TO IT. 3. It is your responsibiity to insure that chidren under the age of 18 or other unauthorized persons do not gain access to your firearm. To reduce the risk of accidents invoving chidren, unoad your firearm, ock it and store the ammunition in a separate ocked ocation. Pease note that devices intended to prevent accidents - for exampe, cabe ocks, chamber pugs, etc, - may not prevent use or misuse of your firearm by a determined person. Stee gun safes may be more appropriate to reduce the ikeihood of intentiona misuse of a firearm by an unauthorized chid or person. 2. ALWAYS TREAT A FIREARM AS IF IT WERE LOADED. 2. Never assume that a firearm is unoaded. The ony certain way to ensure that a firearm is empty is to open the chamber and visuay examine the inside to see if a round is present. Removing the magazine wi not guarantee that a pisto is unoaded or cannot fire. Shotguns and rifes can be checked by cycing or removing a rounds and by then opening the chamber so that a visua inspection of the chamber for any remaining rounds can be made. 4. NEVER SHOOT AT WATER OR AT A HARD SURFACE. 4. Shooting at the surface of water or at a rock or other hard surface increases the chance of ricochets or fragmentation of the buet or shot, which can resut in the projectie striking an unintended or periphera target. 5. KNOW THE SAFETY FEATURES OF THE FIREARM YOU ARE USING, BUT REMEMBER: SAFETY DEVICES ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR SAFE HANDLING PROCEDURES. 5. Never rey soey on a safety device to prevent an accident. It is imperative that you know and use the safety features of the particuar firearm you are handing, but accidents can best be prevented by foowing the safe handing procedures described in these safety rues and esewhere in the product manua. To further famiiarize yoursef with the proper use of this or other firearms, take a Firearms Safety Course taught by an expert in firearms use and safety procedures. 6 7

5 6. PROPERLY MAINTAIN YOUR FIREARM. 6. Store and carry your firearm so that dirt or int does not accumuate in the working parts. Cean and oi your firearm, foowing the instructions provided in this manua, after each use to prevent corrosion, damage to the barre or accumuation of impurities which can prevent use of the gun in an emergency. Aways check the barre prior to oading to ensure that it is cean and free from obstructions. Firing against an obstruction can rupture the barre and injure yoursef or others nearby. In case you hear an unusua noise when shooting, stop firing immediatey, ingage the manua safety and unoad the firearm. Make sure the chamber is free from any obstruction or possibe buet bocked inside the barre due to defective or improper ammunition. 7. USE PROPER AMMUNITION. 7. Ony use factory-oaded, new ammunition manufactured to industry specifications: CIP (Europe and esewhere), SAAMI (U.S.A.). Be certain that each round you use is in the proper caiber or gauge and type for the particuar firearm. The caiber or gauge of the firearm is ceary marked on the barres of shotguns and on the side or barre of pistos. The use of reoaded or remanufactured ammunition can increase the ikeihood of excessive cartridge pressures, casehead ruptures or other defects in the ammunition which can cause damage to your firearm and injury to yoursef or others nearby. 8. ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLASSES AND EARPLUGS WHEN SHOOTING. 8. The chance that gas, gunpowder or meta fragments wi bow back and injure a shooter who is firing a gun is rare, but the injury that can be sustained in such circumstances is severe, incuding the possibe oss of eyesight. A shooter must aways wear impact resistant shooting gasses when firing any firearm. Earpugs hep reduce the chance of hearing damage from shooting. 10. AVOID ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR JUDGMENT OR REFLEX IMPAIRING MEDICATION WHEN SHOOTING. 10. Do not drink and shoot. If you take medication that can impair motor reactions or judgment, do not hande a firearm whie you are under the infuence of the medication. 11. NEVER TRANSPORT A LOADED FIREARM. 11. Unoad a firearm before putting it in a vehice. Hunters and target shooters shoud oad their firearm ony at their destination. If you carry a firearm for sef-protection, eaving the chamber unoaded can reduce the chance of accidenta discharge. 12. LEAD WARNING. 11. Discharging firearms in poory ventiated areas, ceaning firearms, or handing ammunition may resut in exposure to ead and other substances known to cause birth defects, reproductive harm, and other serious physica injury. Have adequate ventiation at a times. Wash hands thoroughy after exposure. 9. NEVER CLIMB A TREE, FENCE OR OBSTRUCTION WITH A LOADED FIREARM. 9. Open and empty the chamber of your firearm before cimbing or descending a tree or before cimbing a fence or jumping over a ditch or obstruction. Never pu or push a oaded firearm toward yoursef or another person. 8 9

6 DESCRIPTION Beretta Cougar semi-automatic pistos, avaiabe in many high-power caibers, use a briiant adaptation of a proven ocked-breech system with rotating barre. The compact dimensions make the Beretta Cougar pistos easy to concea and operate. CHARACTERISTICS A. THE LOCKING SYSTEM Fig. 2 A. The Cougar series pistos empoy a short recoi ocked-breech system, simpe and practica, based on the secure ock of the side to the barre. The barre ocking and unocking rotation is caused by its axia movement through the doube cam acting on the centra bock tooth. A. This ocking system has required a cosed-side design thus breaking the tradition of the open-side design going back to the eary Beretta semi-automatic pistos. B. THE DOUBLE ACTION Fig. 1 B. The doube action offers the advantages of the revover. In the rare instance of misfire due to a fauty primer, it is sufficient to pu the trigger again to repeat the percussion on the cartridge and fire the round. C. THE GREAT FIRE CAPACITY Fig. 3 B. The staggered magazine, of the same ength as a traditiona singe ine magazine, aows greater fire capacity (see technica data on page 33). D. THE COMPLETE SAFETY SYSTEM Fig. 1 D. D1. Automatic firing pin safety: when the trigger is not pued competey back, a bocking device secures the firing pin and prevents it from moving forward, even if the weapon shoud fa from a height and strike the ground muzze-down. D. D2. Manua safety-decocking ever (F Modes): aows safe hammer owering over a chambered round. The safety rotation interrupts and shieds the firing pin unit from hammer strike. With the safety ON, the inkage between trigger and sear is disconnected. (It is not present on D modes, doube action ony. The G Modes feature a manua decocking ever ony). E. THE GREAT SIMPLICITY OF FIELD STRIPPING Fig. 1, 2 E. The disassemby device is designed to aow an extremey quick and simpe fied stripping of the pisto and yet avoid casua or invountary disassemby. F. THE FUNCTIONAL AND ANATOMICAL FEATURES Fig. 1, 2 F. F1. Side catch: when the ast round has been fired, the side ocks open, 10 11

7 signaing that the magazine is empty. F. F2. Ambidextrous safety decocking ever: (not present on D modes, doube action ony). Aows easier and quicker handing by eft and right-handed shooters. F. F3. Reversibe magazine reease button: it can easiy be assembed on the right side of the pisto for eft handed shooters. F. F4. Specia sights: front and rear sights are designed for swift target acquisition. To aid sighting under ow ight conditions, the sights are equipped with white dots. Both sights are removabe and repaceabe. F. F5. Compact size: the Cougar dimensions, particuary reduced in ength, make these high-power pistos easy to concea and operate. F. F6. Anatomica hande: the newy designed ergonomicay contoured hande better accomodates and protects the hand, faciitating, at the same time, the correct grip of the pisto aso under conditions of rapid, fire. The front and back straps of the grip guarantee a firm hod even with wet hands. F. F7. Checkered grips: they ensure a better hod and give to the pisto a touch of eegance. Wanut checkered grips are avaiabe on request. G. SPECIAL MODELS Fig. 4, 5 G. G MODELS G. The G modes feature a manua decocking ever ony instead of the safetydecocking ever of the Cougar F. When the decocking ever is reeased, it automaticay returns to the ready to fire position. There is no manua safety (Fig. 4). G. D MODELS G. The D modes are doube action ony pistos: the hammer aways foows the side forward to come to rest in the doube action position (the hammer never stays cocked). The manua safety and the decocking evers have been eiminated. The hammer spur has been removed, and is fush with the rear of the side (Fig. 5). G. L MODELS G. These pistos are avaiabe in F version ony and they feature a more compact design, a beveed and ighter side, a shorter grip and a fire capacity of 14* rounds (13+1). G. MINI COUGAR MODELS G. Shorter in the grip and ighter, the Mini Cougar pisto is even more compact than the fu size Cougar. Yet it has a of the same performance and safety features of the standard version. G. INOX VERSIONS G. Some modes are avaiabe in the Inox version featuring the foowing parts made in stainess stee: The barre, the side (incuding the extractor and the safety evers if present), the trigger, the side stop ever, the disassemby atch (button incuded), the magazine reease assemby and the trigger bar. 12 G. The ight aoy frame and the other auminum aoy parts are sand-basted and anodized grey. 8 GENERAL OPERATION Beretta Cougar semi-automatic pistos use a short recoi ocked-breech system with rotating barre. When the pisto is fired, the recoi energy pushes the side-barre assemby backward. After a short run of barre-side assemby, the barre is revoved by cam action against the centra bock tooth. When the barre has turned about 30 degrees, the barre ocking ugs cear the ocking recesses on the side. The barre then stops against the centra bock whie the side continues its rearward trave extracting and ejecting the fired cartridge case through the ejection port, rotating the hammer and activating the recoi spring. Pushed by the recoi spring, the side then moves forward, feeding the next cartridge from the magazine into the chamber, causing the barre rotation by cam action against the centra bock tooth and barre-to-side ocking. The side is designed to stay open after the ast cartridge has been fired and the spent she casing has been ejected. CAUTION: Some modes are equipped with hammer haf-cock position. It is not recommended to carry the hammer haf-cocked. This device is intended to prevent accidenta discharge shoud the hammer drop. NOTICE: The figure numbers noted beow refer to the photographs on pages 3 and 62. LOADING AND FIRING WARNING: Before oading the firearm, practice the foowing oading procedures without the use of ammunition. Never hande a oaded firearm unti you are fuy famiiar with the oading procedures. Aways point the firearm in a safe direction. (See points 1, 2 and 4 of the BASIC SAFETY RULES). AMMUNITION Using good quaity ammunition combined with preventive maintenance wi make the pisto perform fawessy through years of service. To prevent mafunctioning aways visuay inspect each cartridge for externa damage before oading. The pisto is designed and tested to withstand continued shooting with a brands and types of commercia ammunition manufactured to standard (C.I.P., S.A.A.M.I., etc.) specifications. We do not recommend extended use of +P, +P+ or submachine gun ammunition because the chamber pressure may reach or exceed proof oad pressure decreasing the major components service ife expectancy. The warranty does not cover the use of reoaded and/or hand oaded ammunition. CAUTION: - Make sure the buets are of the right caiber size according to internationa specifications (C.I.P., S.A.A.M.I., etc.). - Lead buets have a tendency to cause bore eading which may dramaticay increase the discharge pressure. - Make sure to remove a chamber and bore ead accumuation after each shooting. - DO NOT ever shoot cartridges with jacketed buets through a barre previousy fired with ead buets before the bore is thoroughy deeaded. WARNING: DRY FIRING If you want to practice shooting your pisto without using ive ammunition (caed dry firing ), insert an appropriate snap cap into the chamber to cushion the fa of the firing pin and reduce the chance of firing pin breakage. Snap cap cartridges with spring oaded primers are idea. DUMMY cartridges with empty primer pockets are good for oading/unoading practice but DO NOT protect the firing pin during dry firing. CAUTION: No one shoud attempt to make recommended repairs without proper knowedge or training
