The money was raised during through the raffle of two custom art pieces, each featuring a Boston Whaler boat, during this year s IMAGES Art Festival, an annual event held in New Smyrna, Florida. Boston Whaler is honored to support our local community, said Nick Stickler, president of the Edgewater, Florida-headquartered builder of 11- to 42-foot runabouts, cruisers and center console boats. It is important for us to take an active role in giving back to the community and being a part of inspiring young minds is very fulfilling. Throughout the year, Boston Whaler, participates in other charitable community activities such as Boatload of Backpacks, the Toy Drive for Edgewater Fire Department Project Caring, and Indian River Clean-up. The Beast Has Arrived at Lauderdale Marine Center Bigger is better at the Lauderdale Marine Center (LMC). In August, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based largest yacht repair facility in the U.S. welcomed a massive five stories tall, 47- foot wide travel lift, aptly nicknamed The Beast. This greencolored machine is capable of hoisting yachts up to 180 feet long with a maximum beam of up to 34.5 feet. In fact, the first boat hoisted by the new travel lift was the 143-foot Van Mill motor yacht, Star Ship. 4 South Florida News Fish for a Cause at the Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic There s fishing fun for a good cause down in the Florida Keys this month. The Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic celebrates its 10th Annual tournament October 6 to 7, out of the Postcard Inn Resort and Marina in Islamorada, Florida. Named to honor Jim Mad Dog Mandich, an avid angler, former 72 Miami Dolphins star player, local radio personality and a Keys resident and business owner who lost his battle to cancer. The tournament benefits the Mariners Hospital Oncology Services and other local community organizations. Anglers in the Offshore division fish for species such as dolphin, tuna, kingfish, wahoo, snapper and grouper. Inshore division anglers try their luck for spotted seatrout, redfish, snook, mangrove snapper and tarpon. The Mad Dog Mandich Fishing Classic awards a $5,000 cash prize for the Top Offshore Boat and a $1,000 prize to the Top Inshore Boat. Since this is a family event, the tournament also awards trophies to the Top Lady Angler, Top Overall Angler and Top Junior Angler in each division, invites Alexis Dawson, assistant director of Mad Dog Classic Events. The recent $5 million renovation of Port St. Pete was planned with the ultimate goal of making maintenance easier for visiting captains, says Walt Miller, marina and port manager. The Port can accommodate some of the largest yachts in the world and has been revamped to allow a wide variety of vendors and their service vehicles to work on the wharf, right alongside the vessel, to perform dockside maintenance. Bareuther Cruising grounds that range from deserted beaches in off-the-beaten-track destinations to those offering the glitz and glamor of big city dining and dancing. These are the opportunities for chartering in South Florida and the Bahamas. Its hard to find this something-for-everyone scenario elsewhere in the world. What s more, it s possible to enjoy a bit of both shoreside extremes in a weeklong charter. South Florida and the Bahamas are world-famous among boaters and vacationers alike, says Ian Pedersen, marketing manager for The Moorings-North America, headquartered in Clearwater, Florida. Between the warm waters, ease of access, abundant fishing and overall culture, it is no surprise that the region is extremely popular among charterers as well. SOUTH FLORIDA Simply sailing Biscayne Bay for 3 to 4 days can be the simpliest fun, says Hannah Allison, co-owner of Maz Ocean Inc., a Dania Beach, Florida headquartered marine electronics business affiliated with several yacht charter companies. For a week s trip, I suggest Fort Lauderdale to Islamorada, stopping in marinas for the first 3 to 4 days to enjoy the res- taurants and night life between Fort Lauderdale and Coconut Grove, says Capt. Warren East, founder and director of the North Palm Beach, Florida-based East Yachts Ltd. Spend the remaining nights cruising from Biscayne Bay south to Islamorada taking advantage of the intracoastal waterway and the protected waters of the Everglades. Or, start in Miami and head north to the Vero Beach area. There are hundreds of excursions to enjoy in South Florida including beautiful gardens, historic sights, lively shows and alligator tours in the Everglades. What s nice about the Florida Keys is that there is always something happening, according to David Sell, owner of the Miami, Florida-based Florida Yacht Group, which offers multi and monohull power and sailing yachts for charter in Miami and the Florida Keys. For example, there s Fantasy Fest and Hemingway Days in Key West, lobster season for eight months of the year, and power boat races and sailing competitions year round. Sailing around the Keys is easy and with 150 miles of reef line, there is plenty of fishing, snorkeling and diving. THE BAHAMAS Which islands in the Bahamas to visit depends on what your idea of adventure is, says Sell. 7 acos; Diving the Abacos, Eleuthera, Andros and the Exumas. Personal favorite Bahamian destinations of the Mooring s Pedersen include the Exumas, for its picturesque waters, white sand beaches, world-class marinas and excellent fishing. East Yacht s East agrees. I have had the pleasure of running a 90-foot power cat out of Nassau for the last year. I haven t seen anything close to the Exumas for all out beauty in my over 23 years as a charter captain, although Eleuthera and Harbor island down to Nassau is also a beautiful place to cruise. Maz Ocean s Allison recommends the Berry Islands. Few people go there and there is so much to see and do, from experiencing the quiet solitude to learning about the interesting history. What are the pro s and con s of starting a Bahamas charter in Florida versus this British commonwealth itself? The positive points to starting in Florida are the price of fuel and access to first class provisions and services. The obvious challenge is the Gulf Stream. I have had clients embark in Miami and Palm Beach with hopes of getting to the Exumas for their dream vacation, but conditions in the 55-mile passage to Bimini are so bad that they had to spend 3 days in the intracoastal instead, says East Yacht s East. He continues, If clients opt to sail out of Nassau instead of Miami or Fort Lauderdale, they are usually hit with a $4,000 to $6,000 fuel bill for a delivery and redelivery fee to and from Florida. For that reason, when I do a search for yachts in the Bahamas, I generally tend to focus on the ones that are already based there and that have a local charter license. Locally based yachts are usually more in tune to the ways of getting what they need and their knowledge of the Bahamas is considerably better. I wouldn t say there is a particular advantage to sailing or power boating, but I do think that it helps to have a shallow-draft boat. Shallow-draft is more common on power boats and sailing catamarans. Monohulls with a deeper keel will find themselves limited in where they can go in certain parts of the region due to the shallow waters, explains The Moorings Pedersen. A large percentage of the Bahamas and Florida motor yacht charter fleet are in the 80- to 120-foot range, says East Yacht s East. This size of yacht draws between 6- and 7-feet, which makes them ideal. However, a vessel with a 4-foot draft can seriously improve the quality of the charter. There is never a bad time to charter in South Florida and the Bahamas. Although the most popular time of year is the spring and early summer before the rainy season begins, and while the temperature is still in the 80 s rather than the 90 s. Be advised that contrary to popular belief, it can get a bit chilly here in the winter months, says The Moorings Pedersen. October 2017 allatsea.net SF7

8 Bloodline Sites in the Keys Attract Visitors Story and photos by Jill Zima Borski Location scouts surely had a field day in the Florida Keys sightseeing and frequenting bars and restaurants while finding suitable filming locations for Bloodline, the wildly successful Netflix series that filmed three seasons in the Upper Keys. From scenic beaches, boardwalks and mangroves in a state park at mile marker (MM) 68 to the waterfront Alabama Jack s 57 miles away, Florida Keys scenery, marinas and local hangouts were major players in the 33 suspense-filled episodes. Among the more prominently featured locales was The Moorings, an 18-acre exclusive hotel and spa with a long expanse of beach frontage on the Atlantic Ocean, and colorful foliage and windswept palms that suggest a tropical paradise. The fictional Rayburn Inn is a real place at The Moorings that can be rented overnight or longer. The wraparound porch makes for lazy lounging with coffee in the mornings and cocktails in the evenings -- or copious wine which Sissy Spacek s character indulged in while portraying the worried but wise matriarch of the Rayburn family. Several local marinas were featured prominently in Bloodline including Islamorada s Coral Bay (at MM 82 bayside), a real working marina with dockage and rough edges befitting Kevin, one of the flawed main characters in the show. Coral Bay s owner ignored constant opportunities for an interview, which fit the besmirched reputation of Kevin s marine business. Robbie s Marina at MM 76 was a place for Rayburn bad boy, Danny, to hang out. Whether lounging on a boat or dockside, it is a funky, maybe junky, heart of Keys entertainment with drinking, food and shopping. Anne s Beach in Islamorada was where the Rayburn patriarch kayaked. Sam Shepherd paddled the aqua waters which frequently give families and windsurfers a place to play. A new boardwalk to replace the weathered one is in the works. Long Key State Park also received its share of limelight. Places where Bloodline characters dined or had a drink included Alabama Jack s just outside Monroe County on Card Sound Road, Caribbean Club in Key Largo, and Green Turtle Inn, Mangrove Mike s, Ocean View Inn & Pub and The Whistlestop in Islamorada. These served as sites for conversations over a drink or food -- or a fight. The OV, as Ocean View is known, was rougher back in the day, with salty characters perhaps fresh off an adjacent liveaboard boat. It has been spruced up since Gary Dunn, a former football defensive tackle for 12 seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, became its owner. Perhaps what was most exciting about the filming of Bloodline in the Upper Keys was running into Kyle Chandler in the local Winn Dixie or seeing him and fellow actor, Jamie McShane, enjoying a local establishment. With the Keys stereotypical Live and let live attitude, the actors could shop, dine and drink without paparazzi attention, and in fact, little more acknowledgement from the locals than a friendly, How s it goin? An entrepreneurial businesswoman is offering a tour of Bloodline film sites. She already operated local food tours and felt it was a natural extension for curious Keys visitors who had become addicted and perhaps binge-watched the Netflix series. Sheryl Guerry Rose grew up in Islamorada in the heart of one of the most historical Keys neighborhoods. Her love of food and the rich history of the islands led her to establish tours with captivating stories and local art, accompanied by food. 10 Long Island Tips & Excursions By Capt Shane McClellan As the name implies Long Island is a very long and narrow island. It is about a 35 miles sail from Great Exuma and is one of my favorite islands in the Bahamas. Due to how long this island is, and how much there is to see here, I am going to break it up into two different issues. We are going to start this tour at the very north tip of the island. Here you will find a monument to Christopher Columbus s historic voyage. The monument sits atop a cliff on the northern point appropriately named Cape Santa Maria. If you come to this site by dinghy you should take it up the tidal creek and explore the large blue hole. If we sail a couple miles down the west shore we will come to Adderley s Plantation, which was started by Abraham Adderley in 1790 and was 700 acres. 30 years later his son, William, more than tripled the size of the plantation. By the time William s son could take over the plantation it was on hard times, so he let Uriah, one of his workers, have it. Uriah cared for William until William slit his throat at the dock due to either a love triangle or economic hardship. Folklore says at low tide the dock rubble still has his blood stain on it. At the end of the 1800 s Uriah passed the land on to his children and the plantation stopped functioning as they moved to subsistence living. Thompson Bay. This is about as far as you can sail down the western side of the island due to shoal water, so you will need to rent a car to see the rest of the island. The first thing you come to in the car is the old Spanish church, which is the oldest building on the island. It is in remarkably good shape for how old it is and there is even a confessional built into the wall. A bit farther down the road is the Long Island Museum and is well worth a visit to learn about the history of the island and its people. To me the coolest part of the museum are artifacts found inside Hamilton Cave that predate Columbus s landing. In the next issue, we will start with this cave and continue to work our way south. Nearby you can search for the Stella Maris cave, which is big enough that picnic tables have been set up inside. Two cool things you will see are tree roots coming down from the ceiling and a large colony of bats flying around. Bareuther American Custom Yachts Hauling a boat out of the water and storing it in a safe yard is a great way to protect the vessel against potential storm damage. This idle time is also perfect for repairs and preventative maintenance. To do this most effectively, consider three points: First, plan for repairs by making a list ahead of time of the work needed. Secondly, follow suggestions from boat yard professionals when it comes to top maintenance areas to add to this list. Third, expect and be ready for the unexpected. Plan Ahead Try to identify your work items as early as possible and keep in communication with the yard, so that they can plan for the boat s arrival and get the work done in a timely manner, recommends Tracy Campbell, director of sales and marketing at the River Forest Yacht Centers in Stuart, Florida. 14 Use Your Yard Time Wisely... Cable Marine River Forest To pinpoint what needs attention, there s nothing like relying on good record-keeping, says Kasey Collins, manager at Cable Marine, Ltd., in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Whether you operate your own boat or have a full-time captain, it s really helpful to keep good records. Past invoices or maintenance logs can serve as a head start for troubleshooting recurring issues. In addition, it s wise to keep a running list of items that require attention. For example, port side vibration from RPM or water under salon carpet whether or not it rains. The running list is also very helpful to ascertain the full scope of work needed. Five Top Maintenance Tips 1. Bottom Paint. Inspect bottom paint for signs of wear and tear, suggests Dominick LaCombe, Jr, general manager of American Custom Yachts (ACY) in Stuart, Florida. Typically, bottom paint needs to be reapplied annually. Proper anti-fouling paint specific to your cruising areas will help keep growth under control and help with the fuel bill, adds Cable Marine s Collins. While the boat is hauled out, It s also much easier to perform cosmetic repairs and maintenance on the hull, says River Forest Yacht Center s Campbell. 2. Through-Hulls. Inspect your through-hulls or any other areas that have the potential for leaking. Older plastic throughhulls can deteriorate over time and should be replaced with bronze or stainless steel. Do the same for your windows. Caulking or sealant can deteriorate in the sun and a leak can lead to very expensive interior repairs, advises ACY s LaCombe. 3. Running Gear. Inspect the running gear. Checking the props, shafts and cutlass bearings are regular maintenance items and appropriate measures should be taken to prevent failure, says River Forest Yacht Center s Campbell. 4. Engine Servicing. Engine, gear and generator maintenance is important. The oils, oil filters, primary and secondary fuel filters, heat exchangers, after coolers, fuel and gear coolers, zincs, as well as any other manufacturer interval service needs to be done, says Cable Marine s Collins. He adds, Don t push the life on zincs. Some zincs will lose much of their sacrificial qualities before they re eaten entirely away. Be sure to check those mounted with through bolts for signs of leaking. 5. Safety Equipment. Inspect and certify fire systems and associated safety warning systems such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, flares and life raft, says River Forest Yacht Center s Campbell. These five areas apply to both sail and power, large and small vessels, according to ACY s LaCombe. However, the running gear on a sailboat is typically going to have less wear and tear on it than a power boat. Be Ready for the Unexpected Plan for weather delays, advises Jamie Pollon, general manager of the Caicos Marina & Shipyard, in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands. A day of rain can halt work from being accomplished. Also, plan for unforeseen work. With boats, there s always more than meets the eye. SF14 allatsea.net October 2017

16 Brugal Extra Viejo Rum by Clint and Terry Boram Looking back at our recent sampling, we noticed we ve spent a lot of time sampling rums from the southern Caribbean. It s time to head back north to the Dominican Republic where it is said Christopher Columbus first companion to Hispaniola, Don Diego Bermúdez, brought sugar cane with him to extract alcohol. Today Brugal, one of the 3 B s of rum producers in the DR, crafts rums using a closely guarded family recipe handed down through five generations. In 1888, Don Andrés Brugal Montaner founded Brugal & Company in Puerto Plata along the northern Atlantic coast of Dominican Republic. His core values of Passion, Dedication and Hard Work are at the heart of the company 130 years later. With such a top secret recipe, only family members can become Maestro Ronero. Currently Master Blenders Jassil Villanueva Quintana (the family s first female Maestro Ronero) and Gustavo Ortega Zeller use the latest innovation in rum production while preserving the tradition of the rum. oak is never revealed. The finish is smooth with a lingering spice which warms rather than burns the throat. Adding an ice cube doesn t open more notes, however it does eliminate the spice on the throat. She Said In the glass the rum has a beautiful amber hue with great lacing. The nose is very subtle with vanilla and sherry notes. On the palate the liquid is heavy, almost syrupy, coating the tongue with cherry, sherry and vanilla notes. The finish surprises me. It tastes like a Toasted Coconut Good Humor Ice Cream Bar. I get both the creaminess of the ice cream and the toasted coconut. The final note is a hint of cinnamon which soothes the throat. Overall We are split on the rum. Clint believes it lacks a hook to keep him interested as a go-to sipping rum, while Terry enjoys the surprise of toasted coconut. We would serve Brugal to our friends as a part of a rum sampling to showcase the different styles of rums. In 1976, Brugal Extra Viejo became the first premium rum to be produced in the Dominican Republic. The recipe begins with local sugar cane, crushed to create a sweet molasses. The mash is then double distilled to remove the heavy alcohols. The Maestro Ronero selects only the purest spirits to be aged up to eight years in oak casks. The aging warehouses are positioned north to south, making the most of the Dominican sunshine to intensify the aging process. He Said This rum has a very mild nose. It takes a deep inhale to pick up on subtle hints of berry and fresh cut oak. The initial sip reveals something completely different. Here I get coconut, vanilla and dark cherry with no wood undertones.
