3 Volume: 130 March 2016 McCrae Yacht Club The Best on the Bay out. COMMODORE S COLUMN The season so far has been full of great sailing and terrific weather. The Minnow Nationals was a great success; Murray and Akemi O Brien and Mark O Brien put in many tireless hours, along with a great cast of volunteers. A big thank you to everyone who helped The Social Committee has run a series of special events, including the monthly BYO barbecues. These events have been well attended and it seems everyone has really enjoyed the new format. Thanks to the Social Committee for their work and willingness to try new ideas. The Training Centre under the new team, lead by Murray, Kerry, Jane and Trevor has had a really great vibe. All the classes are full, with many faces new to sailing attending Saturday morning sailing school. The Club Hobie Cat can be seen buzzing across the water every Saturday morning. This has been a valuable asset in terms of introducing new people to sailing. Thanks to all of the training centre volunteers. During the week "Sailing for Schools" has been operating quietly and efficiently. This program is lead by David Briggs and Graham Mason. Over the years this has been a very successful program for the club. Not only has it provided the club with extra revenue but it has also allowed us to engage with the local school communities. Well done and thanks to all those who helped out this season. The Project Members drafting committee has been hard at work putting together the new constitution which will be available on the website this week. It has been a collaborative process and thanks to all of those who have contributed with feedback. Please remember the Extra-ordinary General Meeting to vote on the new constitution will be on 16 April at 8 pm. This year the club has welcomed at over 25 new members and families. It is fantastic to see so many new faces around the club. McCrae is in a unique position; we have great sailing and racing only an hour from Melbourne, magnificent water to sail on, a clubhouse that has a family friendly atmosphere that welcomes sailors and members from all walks of life. Ssssshhhh!! The rest of the sailing world hasn t caught on yet!! TRAINING CENTRE PRINCIPAL/ REAR COMMODORE S REPORT It s been an incredibly busy time at our club over the past couple of months! The Minnow Australian Championships attracted 70 boats including participants from the Northern Territory and Western Australia. The weather was kind with a good mix of both fresh and light winds giving everyone a go in their favourite conditions. The Principal Race Officer for the event was Peter Merritt, assisted by Bronwyn Bird and Michael Johannessen as on-water Race Officers. Mark O Brien took on the role of hard working Regatta Manager. There are so many names I want to mention but the list would be very long! Needless to say our whole team performed superbly and the feedback from all the competitors and parents was very positive, not only from an on-water racing perspective but from a general enjoyment perspective as well. So thank you to all that gave up your time so generously to make it such a success. You have all done your club very proud! (Again) Saturday morning sailing school has started again, bolstered by some fresh faces straight out of the Tackers summer program. Tackers was well attended and even oversubscribed during the second week which had Jane Moffat scrambling around to find extra Optis for everyone. 4 SABRE NEWS All Seek the Red Peak A great cadre of Sabres is making it onto the racetrack most Saturday afternoons and sometimes out for a spin on Friday nights as well. Ok well perhaps the fleet is not as big as the one in the photo but it is pretty healthy all the same! A warm welcome to a few more newcomers to the class Peter van Hugten and Jeff Gunn. I even saw some people hitherto never to before seen in a Sabre (under the age of 40) having a spin on Australia Day. Watch this space. Also, and for the information of members, David Briggs is temporarily without a boat but we understand a new and even faster machine is on its way Tax deductible donations may be made to the Club via the Australian Sports Foundation website. MCCRAE WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA Do you have some information you want to get to the wider membership? Do you have a great photo you want to share? If so, please send the details and a high resolution image (minimum size 500 kb) to Jane Moffat ( moffathj@gmail.com) who manages the website, Facebook and Twitter. The club has a good following on Facebook and regular, interesting content is the main reason for that. Jane is happy to answer questions members have about the McCrae social media accounts. CLUB CAPTAIN S REPORT Hi All Yet again it is a big thank you to all the volunteers. Each week a large number of members give their time so we can all go sailing. This giving of time is particularly noticeable during the regattas we host. For the Minnow Nationals each day we had three Race Officers, people in the tower, race results personnel, over 20 people on rescue boats, roll-makers, canteen workers, people opening/closing, running the bar, organising BBQs, cleaning up, one conned guy from New Zealand who thought he was on holidays, and it goes on. A quick calculation for just Minnow Nationals works out to be well over two thousand volunteer hours all to make our Club look great and to help keep our fees under control. A special thanks to the regatta manager Mark O Brien and Akemi O Brien the canteen manager each who both tried to see who could do the most greater number of hours at the club each day - please thank them both when you next see them. We had great representation from our club sailors all around the country at Nationals level. Simon Merritt has a full report elsewhere in The Beacon. The Tower has rotating shifts on both the radio and results with Mel Imeneo learning the ropes of the results program. Since the passing of Frank we are still after a person or persons who can be in the tower to act as spotter. This role is primarily just keeping a look out and keeping simple notes of what is happening on the water. When a blow comes through Frank always seemed to know who was where. With the season already half over I am still trying to learn how to sail my new boat and I am more and more impressed at the level and quality of sailing and sailors at our fantastic club on the bay. Off-the-Beach Rules! Fast is good but accuracy is everything. Page 4

6 FROM THE MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY A warm welcome to our newest members. Please say hello should you bump into them around the club. Brett and Brooke Williams and their children Harley, Ella, Sienna & baby Archie Campbell and Jackie Loader and their son Finn Campbell Rose Christine and Jonathon Jones Con and Suzi Panousis and children Geordie & Eleni Finn Stimpson-Eaton Georgina Blochlinger Graeme Dowley Heather Wilson and Timothy James Jaimin Barnes Lachlan Ripper Lhamo and Yonten Tserimetha Luke Forster and Jemma Luxmoore (welcome back Luke) Nicci Tgernjavski and Yuri Setnik and their children Lily and Joshua Noah Cullen Declan Bowker Simon & Cristina Digby and their children Oscar and Portia Tom Keating See you on the finish line, Membership Secretary B14 NEWS McCrae Yacht Club has new B14 National Champions! Believe it or not McCrae s much loved World Champions, (Bangers and Gracie) have just been knocked off in the recent B14 National Champs held in Hobart, Tassie. And you will never guess by who. It s not the Cunninghams - these guy s have only been sailing together for three months, and no, it is not Loutit and Dodds. One of this pair had his first sail in 15 years at last year s I Sail Whitsunday B14 Worlds. It is new McCrae member Craig Garmston and Paul Newman (no relation to John and Gringo). So who is Craig Garmston? Craig lives in St Kilda having previously lived in Aspendale in another life when 15 years ago he tried his hand at sailing 49ers, Javelins and Cherubs at Chelsea and Sandringham Yacht Clubs. Craig got back the bug for sailing when one of the English crews required a helm for last year s Worlds, when some-one broke their leg. And who is Paul Newman? Paul is a former club member with Craig at Chelsea and he lives in Aspendale. Now a member at Blairgowrie, Paul sails the single-handed Musto skiff as well having extensive experience in I14 skiffs. The two are now regulars teaming up each week sailing at McCrae. Next the time you see AUS375 rigging up on the lawn go and say hello. The Lake Garda Worlds is fast approaching and 15 B14s from Australia will be attending. This includes fellow McCrae teams of Bancroft & Grace, Garmston & Newman, Loutit & Dodd, Cunningham & Cunningham plus Boyle and Darlow who have yet to announce their crews. That is six boats from McCrae an awesome level of participation from one club! The next major regatta for the B14s is the Phaedrus 2016 B14 State Championship to be held at Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club over the Labour Day weekend. The racing will be well worth a look. The question is whether the advent of the Twenty20 format has seen a loss of elegant stroke play? This photo suggests Yes. The Junior XX defeated the Senior IX in the cricket match. Paul Newman (left), Adrian Beswick (B14 Association President) and Craig Garmston (right) receiving their B14 National Championship Trophy. Page 6

7 MEMBERS CRAFT FOR SAIL The extra Optis were kindly lent by Rye Sailing Club, so thanks to Rye for the favour! We have also run a Safety boat course with seven (mainly young) participants. The Safety Boat course is a more advanced version of the Powerboat Handling Certificate and is a requirement for gaining a coaching qualification, and recommended for anyone operating a rescue boat. The course was run by Graham Mason with Peter Sadler helping. We would like to encourage all rescue boat drivers in particular to think about doing this certificate next season. Please watch the program for details as it will most likely be run again in February. The Sailing for schools program is about to kick off again with a number of bookings confirmed. Once again Merricks Lodge will be sending a number of groups and we are certainly happy to have them with us! The Hobie Wave has been a great success with many new families and friends having their first taste of sailing and many young kids getting a feel for catamaran sailing. There are some rules that need to be adhered to regarding its usage however. 1. Only to be used when the club is in operation and when there are rescue boats available. 2. Sign on and off in the tower. We need to know who is using it and when! 3. Ask a member of the training committee before taking it out 4. Restrict sessions to one hour at a time. Keep in mind that someone else may want a go! 5. PFDs to be worn at all times! 6. Not to be used as a raft/diving platform. It s a sailing boat so let s sail it only! 7. Please wash and store with cover on in the yard Regarding naming of the Hobie Wave, we have had a great suggestion from one of our esteemed Life Members which I intend to put to the Training Committee at our February meeting. All will then be revealed! Boat type: 420; Sail number: Sabre 1424: Lightspeed Plywood construction built by Barry Marmion. Comes with 2 sails, boat cover and aluminium beach trolley. It has had minimal use and has been stored under cover. Price: $3,500 Contact: Michael Johannessen Boat name: Stabler & Waldorf Built 2003 (two owners) and sailed regularly; craft in very good condition. Includes beach trailer, car trailer, boat cover (1 year old) and spare sails. Price: $6400 ONO Contact Andrew Hoadley, or This poem is dedicated to all whose summer peace at McCrae beach or on the water has been spoiled by these motor bikes afloat. and comes from Viking. was written by Michael Leunig published by Training Centre Principal and Rear Commodore MEL'S SUNDAY WALKS: Mel's walks on Sundays have proved to be very popular this year. And why wouldn't it be...a beautiful Sunday morning, a leisurely stroll along the beach with some Yacht Club friends. There are still a few left to go this season so come on down and enjoy the fun. You can check the dates in the sailing program. Page 7

8 SAILING FOR SCHOOLS 2016 February has been a very busy month for Sailing For Schools staff with four separate schools coming to McCrae to go sailing in all sorts of weather conditions. Haylee Berryman and Lachlan Imeneo sailed in Opties with Rosebud Primary School on three balmy 30-degree days with pleasant 10 to 12 knots of breeze. However, on Monday 8th they had very strong winds and had to postpone the day and re-sail on Wednesday and this went smoothly with perfect conditions. Three Secondary Schools sailed with us and Graham Mason and Doug Lee led the team to sail with the Little Yarra Steiner School, Oxley Collage and Goulburn Valley Grammar(who come all the way from Shepparton). Little Yarra sailed on two days with the kids learning to reach and beat on day one. On the second day they headed off on a picnic to Safety Beach where they were lucky enough to land on the beach right next to an ice-cream truck - only to find that no one had brought any money with them! Oxley College sailed six half-day sessions in a variety of conditions from drifters, showers of rain and two sessions where the wind was so strong that the kids could not sail. Instead, our staff took them all on the water with the Pacers fully reefed. Goulburn Valley Grammar had three full day sessions with 33 kids each day. You would all be aware that we only own eight Pacers which made it necessary to ask Safety Beach for a loan of three Pacers that we sold them a couple of years ago, and they were happy to oblige. Again, this program included towing practice in nil wind conditions, sailing both fully rigged and reefed. This has been a busy month with four schools, 400 kids and 500 volunteer hours provided by our Club members. This was a huge effort but a very rewarding one - personally for the staff and financially for the Club. Most of the kids had not even been in a small boat before, let alone take control of a sailing craft. To see their faces when they returned to shore with a We Can Do It attitude gave our staff a great sense of achievement. If you missed the excitement on the beach this season watch the Club Calendar and drop in next season to see what is going on at the club during the week. We are always looking for new helpers. If you would like to take kids sailing in Pacers please call Graham Mason and have a chat. Above: Graham Mason and Doug Guy demonstrate how to tack using the Club s hi-tech simulator. Right: The students put it all into practice under a lowering sky. SAFETY BOAT OPERATORS COURSE The 2016 Safety Boat Operators Course was designed to be educational but the seven participants also experienced joy, fun, apprehension and excitement. The course consisted of a full day of theory, learning new skills of planning, preparation, people management and flare handling. The second day was all about on the water skills of boat handling and search & rescue technics. The third day was not a day at all as Graham Mason had planned to test the students skill by sending them on a navigational exercise out round the fort and back with a few challenges thrown in on the way home. The evening started on the water at 9 pm when it was quite dark, and culminated with a debrief at about 1.15 am All the students passed and received a Yachting Australia Accreditation Certificate. If you would like to take the course, please speak to Graham Mason. Page 8
