Why walking? 15
Walking is the beginning, the starting point the prerequisite for city life is good walking opportunities Jan Gehl, Cities for People 16
Walking is more than a mode of transport as pedestrians we are at our most engaged with the city Lowly, unpurposeful, and random as they may appear, sidewalk contacts are the small change from which a city s wealth may grow. Jane Jacobs, The Death & Life of Great American Cities 17 Photo: Living Streets
Walking is the most accessible form of physical activity Only 56 per cent of adults are getting the minimum activity they need to stay healthy Nearly a third are completely inactive (less than 30 minutes activity per week) Among children only one third of boys and one quarter of girls are reaching minimum physical activity levels (1 hour per day). A conservative estimate is that a quarter of Londoners are getting all the activity they need to stay healthy just through the walking 18
The demand for high quality streets and public spaces will increase as London s population grows and changes 19
High quality walking environments are essential if London s town centres and high streets are to thrive 20 Town Centre Survey

Investing in walking and high quality streets helps London compete on a global stage for investment and talent 22
Walking and cycling - complementary modes? 23
On any great urban street, every part of the current use has it s fierce defenders. Jarrett Walker, Human Transit 24
Pedestrians the silent majority No powerful lobby upholds the general interest in being able to walk without constraint or danger. There's no money in it and everyone expects someone else to put in the hard work. Nick Cohen, Why is Britain such a dangerous place for walkers? The Observer (April 2014) 25

There's no money in it and everyone expects someone else to put in the hard work. Nick Cohen, Why is Britain such a dangerous place for walkers? The Observer (April 2014) The role of walking is unique. While some walks are an active choice many are invisible. As a result the quality of the pedestrian experience (and what influences that) exist at a low conscious level... Pain points do exist (behaviour of other road users, obstructions on streets, poor conditions of pavements) but are rarely given much attention. Exploring the pedestrian experience and influence of the urban realm (December 2014) 27

Only 41% of pedestrians are satisfied with the consideration shown by cyclists A significant proportion (41%) consider cyclists to be dangerous. There has also been a downward shift in the proportion of Londoners who perceive cyclists to be considerate (38%) and law abiding (35%).
