HOME OF OLYMPIANS
Pictured: Ous Mellouli, 07 OLYMPIC HERITAGE If Olympic medals were tallied not by nation but by alma mater, where would the most international university in the United States stand? In the No. 1 spot, naturally. When the exhilarating 2012 London Olympics drew to a close, Trojans had collected more total medals than athletes from any other American university: 25 medals in all 12 golds, 9 silvers and 4 bronzes. If these USC-educated athletes had competed as a country, they would have placed sixth in the gold medal standings and 11th in overall medals. Welcoming home Troy s 41 athletes and seven coaches who had competed in London, Pat Haden, holder of USC s Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics Chair, pronounced them the most successful class of USC Olympians ever. A remarkable achievement, given the university s storied heritage dating back to the 1904 Games. It is safe to say that USC is the Home of Olympians, Haden declared.
USC is the Home of Olympians. Pat Haden ALLYSON FELIX 08 Track speedster Allyson Felix won three golds in London individually for the 200-meter race, and as part of the United States team in the 400-meter relay and the 1600-meter relay. Nicknamed Chicken Legs for her lanky build, the Southern California native had previously won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making her one of six Trojans to own four Olympic gold medals. The others are swimmers Janet Evans 95, Lenny Krayzelburg 98, John Naber 77 and Murray Rose 62, and basketballer Lisa Leslie 94. The 26-year-old sprinter, who earned back-to-back silver medals in the 200-meter at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, graduated from USC in 2008 with a degree in general studies.
USC has produced 418 Olympians in the span of 108 years that s more than any other American university. FELIX SANCHEZ Representing the Dominican Republic, track and field athlete Felix Sanchez took home a gold medal from London becoming, at age 34, the oldest man to win the Olympic 400-meter hurdles title. It was Sanchez s second taste of Olympic gold, having won the same event at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The child of Dominican-born parents, Sanchez grew up in San Diego and majored in psychology at USC, where he last attended in 2001.
AMY RODRIGUEZ Amy Rodriguez earned her second Olympic gold medal in London after the U.S. women s soccer team completed a dramatic 2-1 victory over defending world champion Japan. The Beverly Hills native had pocketed her first Olympic gold four years earlier in Beijing. For Team USA, London was the third straight gold medal in women s soccer, and the fourth in the last five Olympics. Of course Rodriguez or A-Rod, as she is known to teammates was already a heroine at USC, having led the Trojans to their first-ever NCAA Women s Soccer Championship in Rodriguez is currently a senior at USC with a major in psychology.
REBECCA SONI 09 Swimming champion Rebecca Soni is a world-record holder and gold medalist in two Olympics Beijing and London. Her medal count from the London Olympics weighed in at two golds (in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay) and a silver (in the 100-meter breaststroke). She had become an international star four years earlier in Beijing, when she won gold in a then-world record time of 2:20:22 for the 200-meter breaststroke. That year, she also took home a pair of silver medals in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter medley relay. She made history again in London, first setting a new world record of 2:20:00 in the 200-meter breaststroke semifinal, then promptly breaking her own new world record with 2:19:59 in the final. She now has six career Olympic medals, three gold and three silver. Soni graduated from USC in 2009 with a bachelor s degree in communications from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. For the past three years during her Olympic training, she served as a volunteer assistant swimming coach at USC.
Trojans have collected 287 medals 135 golds, 87 silvers and 65 bronzes including at least one gold medal in every Summer Olympics since OUS MELLOULI 07 Trojan long-distance swimmer Ous Mellouli went to London to defend his gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 1500-meter freestyle. And while he came up short, finishing third to win bronze in that event, Mellouli triumphed in the grueling 10-kilometer swimming marathon, winning gold with a time of 1:49:55.1. In the process, he made Olympic history, becoming the first swimmer to win medals in both pool and open-water competitions at the same Games. Born in Tunis and raised in Marseilles, the 28-year-old Mellouli came to USC as a freshman in 2003 and graduated with a bachelor s degree in computer science in He has served as a volunteer swimming coach with the Trojans and is currently working on a master s degree in postsecondary education administration.
If USC competed as a country, its 287 all-time Summer Olympics medals would rank 16th in the world, while its 135 gold medals would rank 12th. CLÉMENT LEFERT 11 Trojan swimmer Clément Lefert (second from right) helped lead France to gold in the 400-meter freestyle relay and to silver in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the London Games. It was Lefert s second Olympics, having competed as a member of France s meter relay in Beijing. For the gold, Lefert s French team overtook the storied United States team, led by swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, delivering sweet revenge for France s loss to Team USA four years ago in Beijing. The upset, noted a Yahoo news article, drew cheers from at least one corner of the U.S. itself: University Park, in the West Adams district of South Los Angeles. Another Trojan swimmer, Vladimir Morozov, earned bronze in the same event when his Russian teammates came in third. A native of Nice, Lefert graduated in 2011 with a bachelor s degree in economics.
TUMUA ANAE 10 KAMI CRAIG 10 LAUREN WENGER 10 The Trojan trio of Tumua Anae, Kami Craig and Lauren Wenger savored their hard-earned gold after defeating Spain in the women s water polo final. It was the first-ever gold medal for Team USA in the sport. For Craig and Wenger it felt like redemption, having settled for silver medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Other Trojan women were to be found on rival London Olympic water polo teams, including freshman Anni Espar, who won silver for Spain; junior Flora Bolonyai, playing goalie for fourth-place Hungary; and alumnae Aniko Pelle 03 for Italy and Sofia Konoukh 04 for Russia. Kami Craig, left, of Santa Barbara, graduated in 2010 with a degree in sociology. Wenger, center, of Long Beach, graduated in 2010 with a major in policy, planning and development. Hawaii-born goalie Anae, right, graduated in 2010 with a major in broadcast journalism.
