1 LANARKSHIRE FEDERATION NEWS Peterborough Report June 2015 By Tom Corrie This week we move on to Peterborough in the district of Cambridgeshire which is only 75 miles from London. The forecast was good for the 272 miles flight back into Central Scotland. The 3,500 birds were liberated at 6am in a light WNW wind with the South Lanarkshire and Glasgow Federations. Just after 7 hours and six minutes the winner alighted onto the trap of fellow club mate Martin Halley from the village of Plains which is situated on the east side of Airdrie. This was this week s federation winner, a 2yr old check cock, flown on the celibate system, which has worked well for Martin all season, as he has been at the top of the club results every week. Martin has recently stopped racing youngsters, breeding them late on the season and then training them like late breds throughout the off-season from distance. This cock was prepared on this system. He is very interested in distance flying and hopes this system will produce a National winner in the future. His winner was bred from friend Keith Cochrane of Crossgate in Fife from his distance family. Well done Martin, a good winner. Close behind was fellow village fancier Bobby Peden of Airdrie District club, one yard behind - possibly these two came together, we will never know. The race itself was a very difficult affair with heavy losses reported throughout the clubs. The usual theories have been spoken about: clashing, raptors, but myself I feel when you see the moon and the sun in the sky it s always a recipe for poor homing ability. I have seen this over my career in pigeons and these are my thoughts on the matter. 2 4th D McCaig th W Millen 1231 This week was the start of the SNFC programme from Bilericay and it was great news to hear that Lindsay & Henderson of Newmains club had won the West section of the National.I phoned Ian Lindsay to congratulate him on this great win and ask him about his winner. The Blue pied 2yr old had trapped the same time as the Peterborough pigeons with Ian thinking he was a Peterborough pigeon. He quickly realised it was a National pigeon and his hopes quickly raised. The story behind this pigeon was that as a youngster he was badly injured by a hawk attack, resulting in Ian stitching him up. He recovered and later won the last young bird race. This year he was raced on the Natural system. He is bred from Ian's old distance family. (Please see the recent article about this partnership in the fancy press).well done lads - the cream of Lanarkshire. Remember to log onto the Federation website for all the latest news.
