1 Instrument Installation and Performance Verification NOTICE: This document is intended solely as a guide to proper care and use Reichert instrumentation. Instrument Set-Up, Calibration, and Performance Verification must be performed by the end user of the instrument. Reichert cannot be held responsible for Set-Up, Calibration, and Performance Verification or results thereof. Customer specific applications are solely the responsibility of the customer. INSTALLATION - Prior to installation ensure that electrical supplies conform to instrument specifications as well as International standards. Ensure that the instrument operating environment meets specifications listed in the instruction manual. Follow all unpacking instructions as well as instrument specific set up instructions. Ensure that all material
2 listed in the bill of materials are included, including any calibration fluids, contact oils, electrical cords, instruction manuals, or other material 2. PERFORMANCE and CALIBRATION VERIFICATION (Step 1) - Apply distilled water, allow to temperature equilibrate, and take reading using Refractive Index - Temperature Corrected mode (if available), or % Solids - Temperature Corrected mode. Confirm that the reading falls within the acceptable tolerance of the instrument. 3. PERFORMANCE and CALIBRATION VERIFICATION (Step 2) - Apply a sample of known concentration or refractive index, allow to temperature equilibrate, and take reading. Confirm that the reading falls within the acceptable tolerance of the instrument. MANUAL TEMPERATURE CORRECTION MAY BE NECESSARY FOR SOLUTIONS OTHER THAN SUCROSE. (See Instructions Below Refractive Index Manual Temperature Correction Procedure ). Operator Date Operation and Maintenance Always operate the instrument in compliance with the instrument specifications outlined in the instruction manual. As an optical instrument, it is critical that the prism and sample well be maintained according to the instruction manual. Any residue left on the prism will affect the optical properties of the system, thus affecting readings. Scratches or chips in the measuring surface of the prism may cause inaccurate readings. Due to the nature of use of refractometers, Reichert, Inc. cannot specify required calibration intervals. In general, quality control standards, known refractive index or concentration samples, or NIST certified fluids should be tested periodically to verify calibration. Routine calibration may be necessary to ensure optimal performance of equipment.
3 It is recommended that a calibration verification log be maintained detailing at minimum: the standard fluid used, the operator, the result obtained, the expected result, and the date and time performed. Some refractometer models offered by Reichert, Inc. log calibration events electronically. Refer to your instruction manual for details. 4 (Continued on Next Page) Refractive Index Manual Temperature Correction Procedure The following procedure may be used to correct readings of non-sucrose solutions to a standard reference temperature. 1. Apply standard solution to prism. Wait for thermal equilibration, then obtain the ACTUAL READING (AR) using REFRACTIVE INDEX mode, noting TEMPERATURE (T) of reading (do not use Temperature Compensated Refractive Index Mode). 2. Subtract the TEMPERATURE (T)obtained from the actual reading from the REFERENCE TEMPERATURE (rt) stated for the standard solution (typically 25 C or 20 C) to obtain the TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE ( T). 3. Multiply this TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE ( T) by the TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENT (TC) of the standard as referenced on the label or NIST certificate. The result is known as the TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION FACTOR (TCF). 4. Add the TEMPERATURE COMPENSATION FACTOR (TCF) to the ACTUAL READING (AR) to obtain the REFRACTIVE INDEX TEMPERATURE COMPENSATED (RITC). 5. Compare the REFRACTIVE INDEX TEMPERATURE COMPENSATED (RITC) to the Refractive Index stated for the standard solution. T = rt - T TCF = ( T) x (TC) RITC = TCF + AR
