Bed Bugs in Adult Foster Care Settings How to Identify Bed Bugs What to do if Bed Bugs are in Your Home What Not to Do if you Find Bed Bugs Presented by Rebecca Yeaman
What! Bed Bugs are real?! Bed bugs are small bugs that can reproduce very quickly.! Bed bugs can live for over a year without a meal.! Mature female bed bugs lay 3-5 eggs every day.! Bed bugs can continue laying eggs for as much as 5 weeks with only one meal.
Signs Bed Bugs May be in Your Home! Unexplained welts or bites (bites are commonly in twos or threes)! Small blood spots/smears on sheets and pillowcases! Visible signs on mattress seams or bed frames! Unexplained black marker-like spots on sheets or on the mattress
What do Bed Bugs Look Like?
What do Bed Bugs Look Like? First stage nymph after meal Bed Bug eggs
Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?! Bed bugs hitch-hike on luggage, purses, jackets, used furniture, moving vans, sofas, etc.! Nearly every hotel in the U.S. has to deal with bed bugs. Some have inspections monthly to prevent the spread of bed bugs.! Some don t.
Where Could You Get Bed Bugs?! Hotels! Coffee shops! Theaters! Waiting rooms! Public Transportation! Thrift Stores Bed bugs can be picked up anywhere other people are.
Can You Avoid Getting Bed Bugs YES All you have to do is NEVER GO OUTSIDE and NEVER HAVE GUESTS OVER. It s that simple, but not very realistic
You Can Take Precautions! Know what to look for.! Be familiar with the signs and symptoms of bed bugs! Take precautions in hotels. Always put your luggage in the bathtub.! Keep luggage zipped in hotel rooms.! Don t bring abandoned furniture home.
What to do if you suspect bed bugs! Immediately gather all bedding and launder it, drying for two cycles to ensure all bedding is heated thoroughly.! Inspect the bed frame, mattress, pillows and boxspring while laundering bedding. You will need a magnifying glass and a flashlight to inspect on your own.
What else to do if you suspect bed bugs! Have a professional inspection with a bed bug sniffing dog or experienced Pest Control Co.! Have the County Health Department identify any bugs you find.! Apply Climb-Up Interceptors on all bed legs to capture and indentify bed bugs.! Act quickly if you suspect bed bugs before they multiply out of control.
What NOT to do if you suspect bed bugs! Do not move furniture, bedding or any objects around the room or house if you suspect bed bugs.! This is a common way people expand their infestations.! Do not begin sleeping in other rooms or on the sofa. Bed bugs will follow you.
Multnomah Public Health Dept. Can Identify Insects for you at no charge.! Use a sealable vial, small container, or plastic bag to capture bugs noticed near sleeping areas. Do not crush or damage the bugs. Seal and freeze for three hours. Send or deliver to our office, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.! Multnomah County Vector Control and Code Enforcement Attention Bug Sample 5235 North Columbia Blvd Portland, OR 97236
National Geographic teaches us about bed bugs! v=wfkccspcoqo&feature=player_embedded
Bed bug infestations can be controlled by following an integrated pest management approach that uses multiple methods at the same time.
Bed Bug Facts! Heat kills bed bugs. Bed bugs and eggs are killed at temperatures above 120 for one hour.! Bug bombs and common pest sprays DO NOT kill bed bugs or their eggs.! Bed bugs need their meal to be still while they feed.
More Bed Bug Facts! Bed bugs cannot jump or fly, they do not have wings.! Bed bugs are visible to the eye, but can be so small as to be hard to identify.! Bed bugs feed for 3 to 15 minutes. If disturbed they begin again, thus the 2-3 bite pattern.
Bed Bugs Reproduce Like Crazy
How long would it take to see signs of bed bugs?! This depends on you, and the bed bug(s). Did one come from a hotel, movie theater, bus, or coffee house, hitch-hiking on a back-pack or jacket, or did a small herd of them migrate from a connected apartment into yours?! An adult female will begin laying 3-5 eggs a day.! When those eggs hatch in about 7-10 days, those baby bed bugs, called nymphs, will seek their first meal.! When they reach adulthood (after about 5 meals) in about 5-7 weeks, those females will begin laying 3-5 eggs daily. So now you have a bed bug factory with multiple eggs being laid every single day, and two months later you've got a nice infestation on your hands.! This is why it is so important to get an early inspection and rapid treatment if you do have bed bugs.
How should I handle an infestation if multiple persons could be exposed to bed bugs?! Immediately respond to potential bed bug complaints! Keep an itemized list of actions that were taken to resolve the situation.
How should I handle an infestation if multiple persons could be exposed to bed bugs?! Immediately respond to potential bed bug complaints! Keep an itemized list of actions that were taken to resolve the situation.
Bed Bugs Effect Quality of Life! The effects of bed bugs on human health can be significant, despite the fact that bed bugs have never been shown to spread disease.
Bed Bugs Effect Quality of Life! However, the most significant health effects appear to be the onset of stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue caused by the presence of bed bugs in the home.
Bed Bugs Effect Quality of Life! Insomnia! Sensations of crawling skin! Inability to concentrate! Fear and hopelessness! On-guard 24/7! Infection of bites and constant itching.
Bed Bugs Effect Quality of Life! Health effects may include dermatitis and secondary dermal infections due to bites, as well as anemia in severe cases (Pritchard and Hwang, 2009).! These health effects are then amplified by the time and expense it takes to manage bed bugs successfully.
Prevention & Early Detection! Routinely inspect for and detect bed bugs.! Inspect traveler s clothing and luggage; keep infested items out.! Seal exterior cracks and crevices, repair screens on doors and windows.! Use interceptors on all bed legs.
Bed Bugs Are Stealthy! Many people with bed bugs in their homes may be unaware of the pest presence because bed bugs by nature are secretive and many people fail to develop visible bite symptoms. Even if bite symptoms do develop, people unfamiliar with bed bugs often confuse bite symptoms for mosquito bites, flea bites, scabies or other non bed bug-related causes, enabling the infestation to continue to proliferate undetected.
What Your Tenants Should Know! Residents need to be aware of what bed bugs look like and encouraged to report unexplained bites, or insects in their rooms.! Residents need to know what not to do if they have bed bugs.! Don t Start sleeping elsewhere in the home Dispose of belongings without proper preparation Self-treat with store bought pesticides
