Refereeing & port Consultant Referees Body language Players Management José M. García-Aranda Encinar
Refereeing & port Consultant Body Language Body Language Kinesics The analysis of elements Proxemics The analysis of distances Chronemics The analysis of times
Kinesic Refereeing & port Consultant Hands Hands are intimately connected to the brain in human activities Position, direction, movement and shape are important for the credibility of the Referee s decision Avoid limp hands Emphasise the direction of the hand Harmonise the hand, elbow and shoulder in the same direction Consciously use upwards/downwards/forward facing palms
Kinesic Refereeing & port Consultant Central line (CL) Our body has vital organs and vulnerable tissues in the central line of the body, or very close to it The position that conveys control is attributed to the individual controlling the other person s central line Protection of the CL allows the Ref to guarantee the correct distance between him and the players We protect our CL by using our arms and hands as a shield and means of relation. Instinctively, we tend to stay still if a hand points to our central line The lack of protection of our CL allows the players to come too close The Ref has to control the CL of the player
Kinesic Refereeing & port Consultant Eyes and look The eyes are a direct expression of our thoughts, heart and intentions The look of the Ref is crucial in BL Intensity of the look: relax and firm Direction: down, up, distracted, focused Projection: to go far beyond the gesture Look, focus and concentration
Refereeing & port Consultant Kinesic Voice, back, body and feet are also important regarding BL Voice includes language calling and the use of the whistle The code of the whistle is important. The intensity, duration and timing of the ringing of the whistle should be coordinated with the management of the body and its elements
Proxemics Refereeing & port Consultant Positioning The position in which the referee is placed relative to a situation Positioning related to BL: How far away should the Ref be from a player, or players when he is addressing them To who or whom is the ref addressing and in what direction For how long
Proxemics Refereeing & port Consultant Distance Intimate distance. Between 15 and 45 cm Dangerous distance relative to the players Personal distance. Between 46 and 1.22 m Distance for cordial dialogue ocial distance. Between 1.23 and 3.6 m Correct distance for regular communications Public distance. More than 3.6 m To face a group of people
Proxemics Refereeing & port Consultant Distance Only stop if the situation is under control Use the arms and the CL to ensure the correct distance providing the ideal view and relation Turn the body and manage the look, so that you can position yourself facing the situation front or sideways, with a focused or an open look
Chronemics Refereeing & port Consultant Timing The duration of a signal is extremely important hort gestures can weaken the message Calm the game with slow gestures. peed up the game with fast gestures Timing refers to the necessary duration of an action but also the exact moment at which it is performed
Refereeing & port Consultant Cards Always look at the player Always signal the player. It doesn't matter if he turns his back Make a signal for an adequate length of timenever for too little Do not lose sight of the game when writing down Identify the player s body and intentions Keep an appropriate distance when signaling Emphasize the signal with the rest of the body
Refereeing & port Consultant Mass confrontation / Mobbing Prevention starts at minute zero Conveying self-control and managing easy situations makes it difficult for tough situation to emerge Moving is better than standing still Face the target or position yourself sideways to the protest Avoid standing in the middle Protect your back
Refereeing & port Consultant BODY LANGUAGE At all times, under any circumstance, under whatever doubt, in whatever situation, the most appropriate thing to do is adopt firm, effective, simple and direct body language Respect is a key element in the context of the Referee
