8 Powerful Tips To Unstoppable Mental Strength In Tennis 2
Mental Training For Tennis is a program that allows you to develop your mental strength. It is specially catered to competitive tennis players looking to improve their mental game. Get it here 3
Introduction Tennis is all about mental strength. Without mental strength, you can never go far in your tennis career. Professional or amateur player, every serious tennis player knows its importance. Mental strength is CRUCIAL in tennis. It is something that takes time to build, but how do you build your mental strength? There are many techniques to developing mental strength, but in this short report, I would give you some basic tips that can give you a kick start to develop mental strength. They are simple but effective tips, if you learn to apply them. Let s start! 4
Tip#1 Understand Why I have already mentioned the importance of mental strength in tennis. But, are you clear about its importance? Like crystal clear? It helps to know why mental strength is important. Not just on a surface level, but on a deep emotional level. Do you remember the time you lost a match because you are mentally weak? Do you remember losing control of the match because you lost control of yourself? Probably something when wrong that resulted in you not performing at a high level. You may be distracted or unable to deal with certain opponents. You may have struggles dealing with your own expectations. You may have struggles dealing with the crowd. It is important to know of the importance of mental strength before developing it. The process of developing mental strength can be tough if you don t have a clear why. Get the purpose on a clear emotional level. If you are clear of the importance before you start, you would be more motivated to improve yourself mentally. Take a simple piece of paper and write down situations where you are weak mentally and that it cost you the match. Think of the problems that you face. Make it so intense that you will commit to your mental training for tennis. You can learn more about it in my guide Mental Training For Tennis. 5
Tip#2 Keep It Simple As you learn the importance of mental strength, you would need to develop a mental training routine. The key is to ensure that the routine is as simple as possible. When the routine is simple, you would be more willing to take constant action. This can be a daily routine of visualization, affirmation or meditation. It can also be your on-court habits such as how you walk into court and prepare during the warm up. As you keep it simple, it becomes a habit. Unconsciously, you would see your mental strength develop. Don t underestimate the power of simple routines. Sometimes, the simplest of routines are those that can make the biggest change in your tennis game. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. 6
Tip#3 Develop A Routine A routine is something you do all the time. It can be a training routine, an on-court routine or post-match routine. All these routine are small habits that form part of your habits. By developing a proper routine to develop your mindset, you find that things become easier. You would be more controlled on court and have a more stable mind. A routine can be simple, but you would need to consciously do it. Initially, it may be difficult, but over time it becomes a part of your game. Think of the routines that you can develop to make yourself more calm on court. It could be simple things like focusing on your breathing. Some professional tennis players focus on simple things such as ensuring their tennis bags are tidy. It may seem small, but it goes a long way to calm your nerves in tcertain matches. Developing a routine is a key aspect of the mental training for tennis program. Click on the link to learn more about developing a routine 7
Tip#4 Use Visualization Visualization is a powerful tool in sport. It is the power of imagining things. As you imagine yourself being mentally strong on court, you become more confident. The key part in visualization is the emotions. Stronger emotions tend to stick in your psyche, creating a more powerful effect. Focus on intensifying the emotions. As you visualize, you would feel more intense emotions. The visualization can focus on how you see yourself. How do you see yourself on court? Do you see yourself as strong on court? See yourself as mentally strong. See yourself as moving around the court with ease. See yourself as a positive player on court, always hitting positive shots. By developing a powerful mental image of yourself, you feel better about yourself. At the beginning, your visualization muscle may be weak. You find it hard to see yourself being positive. Over time, it would become easier. Your game would change over time, with proper visualization. It is something worth learning and practicing. 8
Tip#5 Develop Your Emotions Your emotions are an integral part of being mentally strong. Many people don t have much positive emotions because their mind lingers on negative emotions. When you have negative emotions, you will have less positive emotions. As simple as that. Being a positive person outside of the court and you would become a more positive player on court. Learn to manage your emotions in life. Develop more positive emotions outside of court and you would feel more positive on court. Focus on developing positive emotions such as self-love, gratitude, appreciation and ease. These positive emotions may seem unimportant in a battlefield such as the tennis court, but they are crucial in relating to yourself. By having more positive emotions, you find yourself more at ease in life and on the court. 9
Tip#6 Don t Be Swayed By The Opponent Or Crowd I understand the difficulty of dealing with certain pressures on court. Some opponents are tough to deal with and some crowds can be critical of you. However, that this is part of the game of tennis. Tennis is a game that is challenging because you are the only one on court (unless you are a doubles player). You are making all decisions on your own, right in front of many people. As such, you can t play a reactive game. You can t react to certain negative circumstances. Instead, be proactive. Being proactive means having a plan before certain situations take place. Develop a plan to be positive regardless of the situation. Don t play their negative game. Instead, accept that this is natural in the game. Think ahead, so you don t end up being a victim of circumstances. Learn to manage yourself better on court, so it doesn t drag you down. 10
Tip#7 Learn To Relax Being relaxed is better than being pumped up. When you are pumped up, it can be sometimes hard to control. You get too pumped up that you lose control of yourself. Learn the various techniques to relax such as meditation or deep breathing methods. The best tennis players are relaxed most of the time. They may be occasionally pumped up, but it is way more important to be relaxed. You need to understand that relaxation is a process. You won t be a relaxed person overnight, but you can learn to develop a more relaxed mindset. As time passes, you would find yourself playing better. There would be certain situation that can be stressful or certain personal expectations. However, know that they are inevitable in tennis. What s important is to relax. 11
Tip#8 Have Fun Tennis is a fun sport. You need to enjoy the game. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have often spoke of their love for the game. They get to where they are in their careers by loving what they do. You should ask yourself if you love the game to put in the effort. Going for trainings, improving yourself. These are all part and parcel of the game. Putting in effort to improve your mental game for tennis is the same thing. It is something that you need to enjoy. The best thing is, you become a better person in the process. Look to improve your own game without stressing yourself or making yourself nervous. You can change your routines from time to time to make it more enjoyable. Just enjoy tennis! 12
