1 Trivial Minor Moderate Serious Very Serious Basketball Risk Assessment for AoC Sport National Championships 2018 Nottingham University The assessor can assign values for the hazard severity (a) and likelihood of occurrence (b) (taking into account the frequency and duration of exposure) on a scale of 1 to 5, then multiply them together to give the rating band: Likelihood 1 Remote 2 Unlikely (occurs rarely) 3 Possible (could occur but uncommon) 4 Likely (recurrent but not frequent) 5 Very likely (occurs frequently) Severity 1 Trivial (No absence) 2 Minor (Periodic absence up to 1 week) 3 Moderate (Periodic absence up to 1 month) 4 Serious (Periodic absence 1-6 months) 5 Very Serious (Long term ill health over 6 months) The severity should provide some guidance as to the risk of stress related hazards which could potentially lead to a period of ill health Rating Bands (a x b) Remote LOW RISK (1 8) MEDIUM RISK (9-12) HIGH RISK (15-25) Unlikely Continue, but Continue, but -STOP THE ACTIVITY- Possible Likely Very likely review periodically to ensure controls remain effective implement additional reasonably practicable controls where possible and Identify new controls. Activity must not proceed until risks are reduced to a low or medium level monitor regularly

2 RISK ASSESSMENT Assessors: C Ford DATE : 16/03/2018 Activity / problem and cause Participants in Basketball Hazard and possible impacts 1) Basketball Hoop/Ring damage 2) Running into team benches. 3) Hitting head against back board 4) Slipping on court Existing controls including actions taken to date Regular checks by duty staff To make sure equipment is 2m away from the court and the courts are clean. Risk Rating (RR) Score L S LxS=RR Benches Trip hazard Make sure benches are located off the courts and checked hourly Additional controls required Protective barriers placed around lead edges of back boards. Hourly checks by duty staff. V mop to be available during competition. Benches checked each morning for any damage Action Lead Floor Raised / Slippery floor. Court to be cleaned when required and put out of action if deemed dangerous. Raised floor boards to be replaced. Dead spots to be investigated and boards replaced Floor cleaned daily and spot checked each hour. Additional time allocated for floor v mopping. Random equipment in the facility. All equipment to be stored away safely after each session. All equipment must be at least 2m away from the playing area Healthy and Safety components will be part of competition briefing to players and team manager. Hourly checks made Poor behavior All participants should be made aware of behavior and safety expectations and this should be monitored school staff. College supervision of participants to include verbal and physical misbehavior Posters of the code of conduct placed in the sports hall and general areas. 3 Moving/setting up equipment Muscular injuries to duty staff when moving heavy / awkward equipment All staff and volunteers to be shown the correct technique to carrying/moving equipment Staff to be informed if event organiser requires assistance with set up. Court lines Trip hazard if the lines are not maintained. Damage to hands when replacing / repairing court lines Use 2 people to move heavy / awkward equipment. Court lines checked prior to opening and also hourly during change overs Any damaged lines reported to Staff and replaced if required Too many people in the sports Unable to evacuate the Maximum number of people allowed in the hall facility in the required an hall is 200 which equates to the available emergency. fire exits for evacuation in the given time Duty staff asked to monitor number of people within the hall during the competition.
