5 Plan your travel route; know the terrain and conditions; check weather Always fill out a trip plan Always carry essential equipment and know how to use it: Carry a safety back pack containing: Flashlight, fire making kit, signalling device (i.e. whistle, flare gun), extra food and water, extra clothing, navigational/communication devices, first-aid kit, emergency blanket/shelter, pocket-knife, bear banger, and sun protection. Add other equipment specific to your chosen activity, season and location. Travel with a companion: the loneliest number is two. A companion can help overcome difficulties or emergencies. Be prepared: ensure all team members understand what to do in the event of an emergency. Do not depend solely on technology: Equipment failure and lack of reception are very possible in the outdoors. Carry a map and compass as a backup. In an emergency Do not panic Stay calm and maintain a positive attitude. STOP Stay put Sit, Think, Observe, and Plan. It reduces the time and search area for the authorities who are looking for you. Seek shelter Protect yourself from the elements by staying warm and dry. Use emergency blankets. Signal for help Think BIG, Think CONTRAST, Think 3 s: Create a ground-to-air symbol by: making the letter V or SOS (at least 3 meters in length); building 3 small signal fires with lots of smoke (green branches); or 3 rock piles to signal distress. Use whistle blasts x 3, mirror flashes x 3, horn blasts x 3 Take this sheet with you along with the Sat-phone instructions The Satellite phone is available from UP - A sat phone use orientation with UP is mandatory prior to use
