1 DATE: JANUARY 1, 2019 TO: National Camping School Participant Florida National High Adventure Sea Base February 10-16, Overseas Highway Islamorada, Florida FROM: MATT HART, DIRECTOR NATIONAL CAMPING SCHOOL Welcome to the 2019 National Camping School at Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. Your application has been received and on behalf of the camping school faculty, we are excited to have the opportunity to serve you at Florida National High Adventure Sea Base. I will be your direct contact for National Camp School. I am best reached via matt.hart@scouting.org. Our host at the Sea Base is Matthew Reineck who can be contacted at matthew.reineck@scouting.org. Before you arrive: An Annual BSA medical examination and health record, completed within the past 12 months, is required and must be completed prior to your arrival. Please bring the completed form with you. If you do not have this required form, you will need to obtain one at your own expense prior to beginning class. Florida Sea Base will not provide offsite transportation so please come Prepared. In addition, you must complete your NCS Personal Resource Questionnaire online HERE. Plan to arrive on time between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. (local time) on Sunday, February 10 th. Departure will be after breakfast on Saturday, February 16, All participants who are enrolled in any retraining sections will be able to depart after Noon on February 13, Aquatics Section Attendees: Please note that there are pre-requisite trainings which you MUST have before you attend your section of NCS. Please ensure you have these trainings and bring support materials with you as proof. Persons who attend without this training complete without these trainings complete very well may be sent back to their home councils. Aquatics Pre-Requisites: Current Lifeguard certification (BSA Lifeguard, Red Cross Lifeguard, YMCA Lifeguard, Starfish Aquatics Institute Starguard, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Program, or equivalent) Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat training and proven swimming skills. Complete, correct BSA uniforms are required. The BSA Field Uniform (Scout shorts or long trousers, Scout shirts, Scout socks) or the BSA Activity Uniform (Scout shorts or pants with Scouting golf or t-shirts) will be worn at camping school. Complete field uniform is required for evening meals, worship services, campfires, and other formal activities. (See Uniform Inspection Sheet.) Housing will be Dormitory Bunk Style. Bedding, linens, and towels will be provided. The Duty Officer Telephone number at Florida National High Adventure Sea Base is in case of emergency. If you prefer to arrive early, you may come in on Saturday, February 9, The early arrival fee is $55, which includes housing, dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Your council will be billed if you arrive early so be sure to consult with them. Florida National High Adventure Sea Base will provide a Shuttle from the Miami International Airport. Pick up will be at 7:00pm on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Airport. The return trip will depart from Sea Base at 8:45am on February 16, Please plan your return flights appropriately with at least a 2 ½ hour drive to the Airport. Traffic can be tricky in the keys with only one road! Round trip cost will be $ Florida National High Adventure Sea Base operates a Ship Store where you will have an opportunity to purchase limited edition items. You can also preview and purchase specialty National Camp School items (shirts, sweatshirts, and more!) to be sent directly to your home via BSA Supply. 2 Sea Base Welcome Greetings from the Florida Sea Base and the beautiful Florida Keys! We are so excited to host you at our Conference and Retreat Center. In preparation for your stay with us, please plan to bring the following items: Dress at the Florida Sea Base is Keys casual. Shorts are encouraged with a short sleeve collared shirt or something comfortable Long sleeve wicking shirts (if you plan on spending time in the sun) * Luau Shirt* Hat* Comfortable shoes/sandals Sunglasses* Toiletries Reef safe sunscreen* Water Bottle* Swimming gear appropriate for Scouting and for your elective programs The Florida Sea Base will provide bed linens, pillow and towels in your dorm style rooms, however, you are welcomed to bring your own. *Can be purchased at the Ships Store. 2 P a g e
3 Sea Base Transportation Sea Base is located on Lower Matecumbe Key in Islamorada, FL. While the physical address is Overseas Highway, Islamorada, Florida any local you ask will refer to our location as Mile Marker 73.8, Bay Side. Miami International Airport (2.5 hours away) and Ft. Lauderdale Airport (3 hours away) and Key West International Airport (1.5 hours away) are the closest airports to the Florida Sea Base. If you choose to travel from either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami, Florida Sea Base will be located on your right side of Lower Matecumbe Key, and if you choose to fly into Key West it will be on the left. Pickups at the Airport can be arranged through KEYS SHUTTLE or FLORIDA KEYS EXPRESS SHUTTLE. Car rentals are also available at each of the 3 listed airports. Sea Base will provide a Shuttle from the Miami International Airport. Pick up will be at 7:00pm on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Airport. The return trip will depart from Sea Base at 8:45am on February 16, Please plan your return flights appropriately with at least a 2 ½ hour drive to the Airport.
