2 Editorial Welcome to the first magazine of 2015 I can t believe by the time you read this we will already have had the Riponian. We are already planning the three events on Melourne and will no doubt be back to carry out repairs before the Trackrod Lookout event. We seem to be already seeing the fall out from the enquiry in Scotland after the tragic events last year. The MSA have reinforced the fact that Media people have no other rights than spectators and should only be allowed to stand where you would allow spectators to stand. On the Riponian Rally they have appoinbted an MSA safety observer. We need your help! 3 Marshal News By the time you read this quite a few of our marshals will have attended the marshals Training event at Askham Bryan. We will have also run the Wass stage on this years Riponian so many thanks to all who turned out to help. As you can see below we have quite a few events wanting marshals. Malton M.C. Ryemoor Trophy Rally 7/8 th March This years event starts and finishes at Stillington Sports Club,Stillington,York(.M/R 100/ ) The route uses maps 94,100 and 101. Refreshments available at start/finish and marshal crews manning more than one post can expect a complimentary breakfast. Trackrod Motor Club Lookout Rally 12 th April This is the 25 th anniversary of this event on Melbourne airfield please let me know if you can help in anyway Flying Scotsman Friday 17 th April This is a 3 day Endurance Rally for Pre War Cars run by the Endurance Rally Association The incredible entry is full and all details can be viewed on the Website. Our section of 3 controls is 6 miles west of Whitby on the Friday 17 April, 1st car due at and close by hours. 4 I have had a call from Peter Metcalf who is the Go Motorsport co-ordinator for our area. He is giving a talk in Bridlington, to a class at Bridlington College who are doing Motor Engineering. The idea is to promote Motorsport in general and also promote our club. He needs someone to help him, and we could do with a Autotest car, or a classic, and a Rally car to show to the students. The date is 12 th March. If you can help, please let me know Robert Newlove The Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 Regulations. 1. The Association of Northern Car Clubs will promote the Melbourne Rally Challenge in accordance with the General Regulations of the Motor Sports Association United Kingdom, (Incorporating the provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA), and these Rally Challenge 2015 Regulations. 2. The championship registration number is TBA 3. The Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 will consist of all three Special Stage Rallies to be run at Melbourne Airfield Nr York. 4. The Rally Challenge is open to all entrants on the three rallies 5. The Three Special Stage Rallies will take place on these dates: The Lookout Stages (Trackrod MC) Sunday 12 th April John Overend Memorial Stages(NHMC) Sunday 10 th May Vale of York Stages(Lindholme MC) Sunday 13 th September 6. Should any of these rallies have a change of date; the new date will be applicable for the Challenge. 7. Drivers and Co-Drivers entering the above events will automatically be registered for The Melbourne Rally Challenge There are no registration fees. The results will be accessible from any of the three club websites. 8. The Championship Coordinator is Ian Beech ian-beech@tiscali.co.uk All correspondence regarding The Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 should be addressed to the Championship Coordinator 10. The Awards for the Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 awards will be presented at Melbourne Airfield at the presentation of the last event.

5 11. The six classes for the Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 will be:- 0. Cars up to 1000cc 1. Cars 1001 to 1400cc 2. Cars 1401 to 1600cc 3. Cars 1601 to 2000cc 4. Cars over 2001cc 5. All 4wd Cars 6. Historic Event classes can be amalgamated at the organiser s discretion. In such cases, competitors will score points in the amalgamated class in which they take part. N.B. Engine capacities will be actual capacities. Cars with forced induction and rotary engine cars: regulation R will apply and have engine capacities multiplied by 1.7 to determine their class. All vehicles must comply with MSA Technical Regulations for special stage rallies with due attention to R 46 - R Points may be scored on all of three rallies, based on performance in Class: 20 for 1 st ; 19 for 2 nd, and so on. If crews enter in different classes on different rallies, the tally of points will still be carried over for the overall Challenge Champions. 8. The Driver & Co-Driver with the highest number of points will be declared the Challenge Champions. 9. The Champion Driver & Co-Driver of The Melbourne Rally Challenge 2015 will be presented with awards. To be eligible the winners must start all 3 rallies. 10. To be eligible for any class awards the crew must start at least 2 out of the 3 rallies

8 An open letter from the MSA Chief Executive regarding spectator safety on UK stage rallies This weekend marks the second anniversary of the tragic death of a spectator on the Snowman Rally, and of course on the Jim Clark Rally in 2014 three more spectators lost their lives in equally tragic circumstances. As a result the Scottish Government, following an emergency debate in the Scottish Parliament, commissioned a major review of safety on stage rallies. This Scottish Government Motorsport Event Safety Review published its final report in January, and the MSA has since gone on record confirming its commitment to the implementation of the report s recommendations, not only in Scotland but throughout the UK. Clearly, there is going to be a period of transition while everyone concerned works as hard as possible to introduce the recommended changes. In the interim, I need to remind all spectators of the fact that they are ultimately responsible for their own personal safety. I say this because despite these well-publicised tragedies, and despite the sport being well aware of the changes being brought about by the Scottish Review, I am astonished and dismayed that an irresponsible minority and I stress minority of spectators continue to display a wanton disregard for their own personal well-being. This was brought home to me when viewing YouTube clips of last weekend s Wyedean Forest Rally, and also from the truly shocking photograph from the same rally in yesterday s Motorsport News (18 February, page 34) of a spectator lying flat on the ground on the edge of the forest track, apparently taking a photograph extremely close to a competing vehicle. This behaviour not only shows a complete disregard for personal safety but in addition places other spectators, officials and competing crews in danger. It also undermines the considerable efforts of the dedicated rally organisers, officials and marshals, who do all they can to ensure that events run as safely as possible. The MSA is currently working on a daily basis with all other stakeholders in rallying, particularly the Forestry Commission, and I can confirm from discussions within the last few days that unless these few idiotic spectators concerned change their attitude immediately and behave responsibly, there will

9 be no future for stage rallying in the UK. I am not talking about next year, or the year after; I am talking about right now. Even in the meantime, this sort of behaviour will mean that stages are cancelled and rallies disrupted or even stopped. Please, for the sake of rallying in the UK, can all spectators take full responsibility not only for ensuring their own personal safety but also the future of the sport we all love. 12 COMPETITION SECRETARY S BIT AUTOTESTS What a great start to the New Year with a record 18 entries on the New Year Autotest. Howard Patterson persuaded Ryan Champion to enter and also a few members of York Motor Club turned out. Thanks to Ken Sturdy s company SPECTRUM for sponsoring the event. Ken eventually won the event, closely followed by son Joe. Michael Wood in his Nova special wasn t far behind to take 3 rd place and first in the specials class. AWARD WINNERS FTD Ken Sturdy Class Awards Joe Sturdy, Michael Wood 2 nd in class Ash Sleights (York MC), Ian Young (York MC) 3 rd in Class Dave Short The next event was in February, again at Reader Transport, Brandsburton. Sponsored by theonepoint Only 11 entries this time, but still encouraging. Dave Garvey and Lawrence Green turned up in their newly painted Mazda MX5, complete with LSD and looked very impressive on the tests. Again there were enough entries to have a separate class for sports cars and specials. Ken really struggled with the first few tests, getting penalties and a very rare washout. After the first six tests Michael Wood was leading the event, but after twelve tests Robert Short had just moved into the lead. Then Ken came back with the fastest times on the last six tests to clinch victory by 26 seconds from Robert. As usual Rob White was providing the most entertainment in his Micra. If anyone is competing in these area s, you will not now have to join another club, as we will be invited. Their website has a lot of info MG Car Club Yorkshire Centre have their annual Daffodil run for classic cars on Easter Sunday. The event will start in York with a scenic tour of the Howardian Hills and finish s at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington. 14 Mellow Yellow gets another staring role! (See photo on back cover) MELLOW YELLOW GOES TO THE DOGS. By Bernard Nolan I received another phone call from the film company at 4.25 pm. Are you and the escort free tomorrow she asked? I can be I ask, why? Never mind, she said. Be in Selby at 9.0 am. So, again, another late night getting Mellow Yellow out and ready for filming. I arrive at the airfield near Bubworth and park up with the other 15 cars being used in the scene, a mix of mid 70s cars, then to the catering truck for breakfast. The scene being shot is a night shoot, using all the cars which will line up to form a track, where an illegal greyhound race will take place, illuminated by the cars headlights. The art director walks around the cars and decides which car will park where, after which we all set the cars in our allocated positions. As luck would have it, Mellow is positioned in the prime spot, on the start line and opposite the cameras because the director liked the car and particularly the colour, Sahara Beige. It is now only 11am and shooting starts at 6pm so a long wait for the other drivers while I go with the manager to the film studio. At the film studio they are shooting an outdoor scene which is the greyhound trainers kennels,which are very ramshackled and the trainer is very drunk. The set is dressed up with a Moggy 1000 van and a very tidy 3 litre Capri which is polished by one of the actors. The story line is that the actor walks in with the greyhound and hands it over to the drunk trainer, very simple, but they are still filming the same scene at 4pm! We finally get our hot lunch and its back to the airfield for the night dog race where I have to go to wardrobe and get into a 70s outfit which is finished off with a white mac, not very flattering, I look like a flasher! The group of actors and extras are given old 10 pound notes and when the director shouts action, we place our bets with the bookies and then cheer the dogs on as they start the race. There are 5 greyhounds in the race but several of them are being handled by actors who have no experience of dogs which becomes amusing, as some dogs set off early, set off late or go in the wrong direction! The evening is very cold, dark and there is a very heavy mist which is quite uncomfortable whilst we are standing around but when all the cars put their headlights on to illuminate the dog track the effect is spectacular. The director keeps shooting the scene again and again but as the tired greyhounds as had enough, he shouted wrap at 9pm and it was a quick change out of costume and a very misty drive home. 14
